1. The first piece from the At Home With Monsters exhibit I liked was the statue of La Metre. This is a statue of one of the characters from the 2014 film, The Book of Life, which was produced by Del Toro. What I especially liked about the statue was the colours that were used. I think that the yellow/orange of the base complemented nicely with the pink of her dress. I also loved the small details of the statue. I found the detail of the flowers in her hair and on her dress as well as the detail of her face paint to be amazing. The second painting that I really enjoyed was Time Avenue, which was painted in 1997 by Jacek Yerka. I really liked the painting because of the mood it created. The atmosphere of the exhibit was very creepy and mysterious. The lighting in the exhibit was like of low and the walls were painted a dark shade of red. There was also creepy music playing in the background. Overall, the atmosphere in the exhibit really fits in with the art that was displayed. A lot of the art was horror based and having the atmosphere of the room reflect that made the entire experience even better. 3. I would say that my biggest obsession is collecting books. I love to read and I love having my own personal copy of my favourite books. I take pride in having my books out on display and so far, I have completely filled up my bookshelf. My favourite books to read are novels, especially historical fiction and thrillers. My only fear is that someday I will have so many books that I will have no place to put them! 4. The director uses these objects to inform his films by using them as inspiration. He takes ideas from his artwork and adapts them to use in his films. The exhibit included many sketchbook drawings of pieces that would end up being used in his films. For example, one sketch was called The Pale Man’s Fireplace. She uses very vibrant colours that make the painting stand out. She included a red and yellow carpet, bright blue background and bright flowers right in the centre. The artist used a lot of curved lines in the painting and these lines are what create movement. The centre of interest seems to be the red poppy in the middle of the painting. The texture of the painting appears to be smooth. The proportions of the painting are done in an unusual way. The focal point of being the mother and appear to be true to size. In comparison, the apple, the trees and landscape in the in the distance are all represented to be true to size based on this perspective. The women being bare foot along with the child who is naked provides unity to painting as they are part of the natural landscape. All of this, gives the viewer the impression that this is a realistic picture.

The blurring of edges, however, starkly contrasts with the sharp and hard contours of the figure in the foreground. The female figure is very sharp and clear compared to the background. The background paint is thick compared to the thin lines used to paint the figures in the foreground. The thick paint adds to the reduction of detail for the background. The colors used to paint the foreground figures are vibrant, as opposed to the whitened colors of the Impressionist background. The painting is mostly comprised of cool colors but there is a range of dark and light colors. The light colors are predominantly in the background and the darker colors are in the foreground. The vivid color of the robe contrasts with the muted colors of the background, resulting in an emphasis of the robe color. The painting depicts a mother and her four children, who are all leaning on her as she looks down solemnly, her tired, despondent expression suggests she felt trapped in her roles as being a mother and a wife. The woman and her children are clearly the focal point of the artwork as the bright colours used to paint them stand out impeccably against the dull, lifeless colours of the background. This painting appears to be centred around the ideology that women are home-keepers, whose main role is to satisfy and assist her husband while simultaneously minding the children and keeping the home tidy and ready for his return. The social consequences of this artwork could have been that the woman could have been berated for not taking pleasure out of being a mother and raising her children, as a woman should. My favorite thing about this piece is the depiction of the New York skyline during a starry night. This is because I am in love with the city at night time. It makes me feel warm. My least favorite thing is the floral border. At first glance, it looks dumb and out of place. I did not understand the purpose of this border until further research was done on the piece of art. I do not think the artist was successful at achieving her goal. I think this because at first I didn't even notice the young girl flying above the bridge. Once I noticed her, I could not tell she was the same girl laying on the rooftop. This made the wild background not make much sense to me. If I were to do something differently about this piece, I would make the flying girl bigger, or put her into more of the focus. Also, I would do something special to show that they are the same girl. Maybe a unique outfit or something would do the job. During the time this artwork was created, Ringgold played a role in the organization of protests and actions against museums that did not show the work of women and people of color. She usually used “overly political paintings” to present her anger (Spector, Nancy). Within this work, she used a story quilt. Everyone loved it! In the early 16th century the Netherlands experienced what was called “tulip mania” this was the beginning of the nations love for flora and foliage (Taylor 13). The result of this impressive flower invasion was a society that took a historical turn from which the results still remain today. Flower merchants, botanists and floral still life artists, were occupations that were an accurate reflection of the Netherlands demands (Brown). An interesting example of a life that was effected by, and devoted to the archiving of the flower craze was Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) the 17th century Dutch flower painter. Rachel Ruyschs’ career straddled the 17th and 18th century, and her stunningly accurate floral pieces reflect the maturing, yet evolving art of floral still life painting (“Rachel Ruysch: Bibliography”). Ruyschs’ Still Life with Flowers on a Marble Tabletop (1716) is an excellent example of a painting that appropriately represents the genre of art that was created solely through specific societal events.
Her use of primary colors and complementary colors are illustrated in the background, at the top of the fabric and in the outer view of the house and in the front yard. There is shading being shown in the two geometric windows. The entire work presents lines and implied lines as a focal point or as a means to describe a scenery. The texture of the garment is silky and very smooth like bed sheets. Post and lintel are crafted on the rectangular door frame and in the small window inside the door frame. Fine art is depicting in the background of the house; the painting is going in its own direction but still have a meaning behind it. The grass, tulips, and the weeds in the foreground appear naturalistic and lifelike which give the painting a multiple use of variety. The composition of the house is centered and upright. Marisela Esteves uses asymmetrical balance in the pathway and on the walkway to the flower garden. On the left side of the house there is a lot of variety elements and implied lines been demonstrating. Also, there is a lot of space in the background which grabs my attention because the line portrays a billboard in my mind that is covered by the vibrant, bright colors. The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.

At the same time a paradoxical foreshortening from right to left is evident. The girl fishing with the orange dress and her mother are on the same level, that is, actually at equal distance. In its spatial contruction, the painting is also a successful construction, the groups of people sitting in the shade, and who should really be seen from above, are all shown directly from the side. The ideal eye level would actually be on different horizontal lines; first at head height of the standing figures, then of those seated. The lighting helps to create the diagonal composition as it moves across the lower half of the painting. During my second time visiting the museum, I looked at paintings from the 15th and 19th centuries. Two of the art works that I choose is “The Story of Joseph” from the Renaissance period and “The Marketplace” from the modern art period. Both of these paintings were from different time periods but they were also very similar in content and style.
