It is a common known fact that technology and robots are advancing in the world’s workforce and starting to replace jobs typically held by humans. Because of this, many people are fearful of what technology could become and how it will affect them. People are afraid that technology will replace their job because robots can manufacture faster, be more accurate, and solve problems quicker. One of the major reasons that many argue that robots cannot take over jobs is that they don’t have human emotions and feelings or our humanness. Kevin Kelly and Clive Thompson both wrote articles addressing technological advances impact on our daily lives. Kelly says that the technology takeover is inevitable but it can only help us. Clive Thompson wrote, “Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better” in which he argues that technology is helping us advance because technology forces humans to use our creative skills. Thompson explains, “Each time we’re bewildering new thinking tools, we panic- then quickly set about deducing how they can be used to help us work, meditate, and create” (353). Thompson shows how technology is not hurting us but rather helping us for the better. For example, he talks about how it helps us “work, meditate, and create” (Thompson 353). All of these are human characteristics, which show how computers lack these and how we have humanness about us. Our humanness comes from our ability to have empathy with one another, have feelings, and create unique and interesting things, like robots. An example Thompson uses is about playing chess and how technology has not hurt chess but helped it by allowing players to consult with computers (358-59). So, that brings up the question that is originally asked by Thompson, “Which is smarter at chess- humans or computers? Neither. It’s the two together, working side by side” (347). This question not only pertains to chess but also to life as a whole. If we embrace technology changes but maintain our humanness, such as our creativeness and feelings, then technology changes can’t really hurt
