How Is Iago Ruining Othello's Life

Throughout the story of ¨Othello¨ Iago has sabotaged, schemed, and formulated plans to ruin Othello´s life which ultimately dictated the plot of the story. Iago's motivations for doing so could be over the top but his goal was reached in the end of the story. Iago's motivations for ruining Othello´s life were Othello promoted Cassio over Iago, Iago had suspicion that his wife was cheating on him with Othello and Iago wanted to have Othello's life. Iago’s motivations were questionable but his goal was ultimately reached which was to ruin Othello’s life for good.
Furthermore, Iago hates Othello for promoting Cassio over him. Iago was a high rank and an established person in the forces and Cassio who was inexperienced was promoted above Iago. Iago was angry about the fact that his position was lost to an amateur compared to what he had done. Iago states this in the novel and believes that he was more fit for the role of that position and that he deserves that spot. This caused a deep hatred to Othello and Iago had a reason to dislike the Moor. He thought that was reasonable because Emilia is friends with Desdemona and when Othello went to go see Desdemona she was there. Iago’s jealousy caused him to spiral further in his own hatred for the man Othello. Emilia however, hadn’t done anything with Othello in the novel and Iago’s suspicion had caused him to dislike her for no clear reason. In the novel it states that Iago wasn’t sure if his wife was cheating on him but for the sake of him hating Othello he was going to believe it as it was true.
