As depicted in the excerpt from Beowulf, translated by Burton Raffel, the qualities found in Beowulf that make him an Epic Hero Include: Beowulf travels to a new world, Beowulf is smarter than everyone else, and Beowulf fights monsters and he is Alone. When Beowulf hears about Grendel in Denmark, he takes his best men to travel to Hrothgar. Beowulf hears that Grendel can’t be killed by made weapons, so he takes off his armor and he fights Grendel with his bear hands. Beowulf fights both Grendel and Grendel’s mother, and both prove to be difficult to defeat. Beowulf is a strong warrior and is a great example of an epic hero
Hrothgar sent word about Grendel's rampage in Denmark and offered a reward for any warrior who can kill Grendel. Word got around to Geatland, where the mighty Beowulf lived, and he assembled his best soldiers and sailed off to Denmark to slay Grendel. Beowulf sailed for many days to reach Denmark, and faced many challenges along the way, but in the end, he made it safely to Denmark, and thanked God for the safe travel. Beowulf was then escorted to Hrothgar, who greeted him with delight, and told Beowulf how happy he was that he arrived. Beowulf knows that Grendel can’t be beaten by human made weaponry, every other warrior that fought Grendel didn’t know about that flaw and all paid the price because of it. Beowulf also knows that Grendel wears no armor, so to ensure a fair fight, he will take off his armor. Grendel can not be defeated with a weapon, so Beowulf decides to fight him with his bear hands, and considering Beowulf's strength compared to Grendel, he knows it’ll be a pretty fair match.
