"The Changing American Family" by Cris Beam and "The American Family Is No More" by Allie Bidwell. Both of these articles are explaining how the traditional American family has changed and that there is no traditional American family anymore. These articles all explain how times have changed and families are growing more diverse and no longer follow the trends the once followed. While the article by Cris Beam was more based of statistics and how much things have changed, Allie Bidwell's article still had the same bottom line main idea. Both authors’ views were essentially the same and made the same arguments.
The nineteenth century was a century like no other. Times were technology and manufacturing are at their infancy. The mass production of almost all commodities resulted in higher standard in Europe, but only for the upper and middle classes. Although the driving machine of these industries, the lower and working classes of Europe were at no advantage then the native people around the globe. The European working and lower classes where slaves in their homelands just like the native popeles around the globe under European control.
The message that women were revealing was that by them giving birth to children out of wedlock was considered fortification. The way fortification was revealed is when the woman took their child’s father to court for child support because the man was guilty of fortification. According to Ulrich, fortification during this time period was frowned upon because it was the era of when it was deliberated sinful to have a child before getting married. But when women would end up pregnant during this time period because there was contraception’s, the truth was revealed and the courts punished accordingly. Out of twenty cases that involved ten women getting pregnant by ten men. According to Nathaniel Thwing’s records, there was ten percent of alleged of men. Five of the men faulted, and took action by which is paying child support. Then, there was a consensus of action between a man and a woman. Family is what you make it. The word family has many meanings. Everyone defines what being part of a family means, and what a family is in a different way. Families differ economically, socially, culturally, and so on. The nonfiction novel, In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote, tells the story of the brutal murder of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas committed by Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. In the novel the reader is able to view the role of family and how it shapes individuals. Nancy Clutter, Dick Hickock, and Perry Smith all grew up in different family settings. These family settings helped transform them into unique individuals. All three of these characters can relate to this quote, “Any two people sharing a common blood line can call themselves relatives, but only when our lives are turned upside down can we truly see if we are a part of a family.” Throughout the novel, Nancy, Dick and Perry each were faced with life troubles that affect their families differently.

Utopia by Sir Thomas More depicts men to be the deciders when it comes to creating a family of their own. In the section Of Their Slaves and Of Their Marriages, More begins the idea of marriage with this Utopia’s goal: “Their women are not married before eighteen, nor their men before two-and-twenty, and if any of them run into forbidden embraces before marriage they are severely punished, and the privilege of marriage is denied them, unless they can obtain a special warrant from the Prince” (More, 91). This quote entails that the man must be older than the woman when marrying; there is no variety of age gaps between couples and the fact that the male is older gives off a sense of dominance.

The television sitcom Modern Family produced by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd shows the many different types of a modern American family. According to Andrew Hampp, “The show is among the most-viewed scripted programs in prime time in its second season, averaging 11 million viewers during original airings and often ranked as the most DVRed program most weeks” (2). The television show is a frequently watched show and is liked by many viewers. Modern Family's storyline helps the families of viewers by being an influential and relatable show to different types of families. The show is about the lives of three different families that are all related. In the show there are Jay and Gloria, an intergenerational couple with two sons-- Manny (from Gloria’s previous relationship) and Joe, their new baby. Jay’s adult son Cameron is married to his gay partner Mitchell, and they adopted Lily from Vietnam. Finally, Jay’s daughter Claire is married to her heterosexual partner named Phil and they have three children. The show is influential to our culture today because it shows these different types of families and addresses controversial themes such as gay adoption, the different family connections and communications, intergenerational coupling, and acceptance of diversity within an extended family. The family is easy to relate to while watching because it is based off of real family situations.
People of around 150 years ago were very superstitious and marriage was important. If a woman did not marry by a certain age she was thought of as a witch, or 'spinster'. Her only roles were to be faithful to her husband and to bear a son to become heir. The role of women was very different from today's society - it was world dominated and run by men.
The idea of family and kinship may seem universal, however in actuality there are many different definitions and thoughts surrounding these words. Depending on where in the world your family could mean your biological parents or it could mean a group of close friends living together. In most Western societies men are viewed as the head of the household, and family names are passed along patrilineally. In this part of the world, “family” is thought of as those who are directly related to us by blood; parents, grandparents, and siblings for example. While there can be members of a family who aren’t related by blood, they usually have a prefix before their title. Adding “adoptive” or “step” before a word like ‘sibling’ implies that while this person is considered part of the family, they don’t share a biological bond. The fact that this clarification is necessary highlights how deeply genetics are engrained into the definition of family in the eye’s of Western societies.
In the past families were portrayed as having two loving and understanding parents who always got along and children were just perfect and got along fine. The reality is that how families were viewed in the past is just simply unrealistic. The perfect families of the past simply never existed. Times were much harder as parents were never home because they were forced to work long and dangerous hours in harsh conditions. These conditions would sometimes lead to illnesses and in some cases death. In many circumstances children weren’t even living with their parents. They would end up in the system or living with other family members. Domestic violence was also much more common than we honestly cared to acknowledge due to lack of education on the subject. The definitions of a family today and a family in the past are far from similar. The definitions may have some similarities but they have changed dramatically in many more ways. 50 years ago, families had rules that were stricter and families were closer in the sense of a relationship. Although some families today are more distant from each other and have fewer rules to maintain order, there are still some that maintain the same styles of the families 50 years ago. Families have changed a lot but still have some similarities depending on their home-life.
Modern family attracts all types of families rather it’s you becoming a new parent or maybe being a gay with a new born is what makes this show successful. Movies and shows draws that attention of a lot of people but what makes this show so successful. Well in today culture it has to reflect on how much people watch the show and let alone who watch the show. Modern family is about parenthood with by racial families. This show is successful because of how in today’s culture, the way people are rising there family. Most people in this time could relate to what happens on the show. Currently in its 4th season, the show is still producing hilarious episode after hilarious episode, with no sign of it soon being a last season. Everything on it works,
The US Census Bureau provides us with astonishing findings. In 2014 about 20.25 million children in the United States lived with one parent, approximately 17.4 million of them were mother only households. Do these single-parent homes not validate the group of individuals as a family? The bigger threat to the future of family, is the lack of responsible parents. Yes the dream might be to first marry, bear children, watch them grow and be one big happy family, but that is not what reality presents to us. There are too many people that involuntary bring children into this world and bail out on a bigger responsibility to take care of another person compared to the usual self. This is what will ruin the future of family, not a couple of married homosexual parents.
