Denzel Washington was a prime example of a man living the American Dream. He had a difficult time growing up and worked hard to become the man he is today. I chose Washington because he is a hardworking man with a strong work ethic, he overcame many hardships, and he is a strong advocate for higher education. I have always liked Denzel Washington as an actor. He has demonstrated passion in his movie roles, something I do not see from all actors. Washington has had an extensive career so far in his life. He has been all over the film industry, not just movies but theater, television roles and even directing. He has played in roles like Training Day, which he won an award for in 2001 for Best Actor or A Golden Globe Award for Glory in 1989. Washington and his family are from New York, near the Bronx, and he was raised by his single mother. He and his sister helped change the next generation of their family by both attending college. This is something I relate to because I am the first of all the generations in my family to go to college, and I was raised by a single mother as well. …show more content…

The ups and downs that he had to endure paid off for him when he became the first Black American to win a best actors award in over 35 years. This was a huge accomplished goal, because the last Black American that won that title was one of his heroes, Sidney Poitier. Washington also had to decide carefully which projects to take early in his career. He looked for advice from Poitier, (2001) who told him to take his time, wait if necessary, and choose the right roles in the beginning of his acting career, because it will define who you are to your audience.
