The Parthenon is a remarkable temple-like structure that demonstrates the growth of Greek wealth and power while also symbolizing the incredible beauty of workmanship in architecture and art. After the Persian Wars the Greeks built the Parthenon as a monument to the Goddess Athena. They believed that Athena had helped them in winning the wars and that building the Parthenon was a great way to gratify Athena, showcase the wealth and power of the city Athens and introduce a new Greece to the world. Leading into the new Greece the Parthenon was the first of its kind and introduced new forms of architectural styles through its complex and proportionate temple and its beautifully scaled sculptures.
The Parthenon structure was intelligently built to perfection. The architects used a balance and proportion system most commonly known as the Golden mean which uses the mathematical equation x=2y+1 to perfect the placements of the pillars. One of the main sculptures from the Parthenon is the sculpture of the Goddess Athena that was placed in the center of the Parthenon with a volume of 26 ft. wide and 13 ft. deep. There is much symbolically rich content to the sculpture of Athena because as stated before the Greeks believe she was on their side during the Persian wars and that she is to be thanked for all of their success and glory. The statue was named Athenas Parthenos which means Athena the Virgin (Maiden) and was designed with incredibly beautiful color and texture. The original statue was made from gold, silver and ivory all of which are valuable elements and further reveal how much the goddess was idolized by the Greeks.
