“How Can I Show Patriotism for my Country, the United States of America?” “Patriotism is supporting your country all of the time and your government when it deserves it” -Mark Twain. In all, especially troubled, times in America, patriotism is incredibly important to show my love and support for our country, as well as to help your country grow. Patriotism for one’s country can be shown in numerous ways, such as joining or donating to our military, honoring our veterans, helping our President to further our country’s state, and many other ways. The first way citizens of the United States of America, such as myself, can show patriotism to our country is join the military. Joining the military is the grandest and most courageous way to show patriotism for our country, but as it is not for everyone, there are many other ways to show patriotism you the United States of America. Another way to show your patriotism and support to our country is simply donating money to our soldiers and veterans. Many charities around Christmas time, such as the Salvation Army, gather around many supermarkets to try and get donations for our veterans and the poor. I have not considered going the army because I believe it may not be for me, but I do show my support to veterans and soldiers by donating to not only the Salvation Army, but other …show more content…
Whenever you see veterans or soldiers a simple way to honor them is to smile and thank them for their service. This is a great way to show your patriotism because veterans and soldiers have risked their lives for our freedom and veterans and soldiers are the reason our country is so amazing. Many of the men I honor and look up to in life have been veterans in war. These veterans tell me about their time in the military, and I believe this shows their courageousness to fight for the United
Our veterans helped make our country the best country, which is known for fact.Today, because of our veterans I’m proud to say that every citizen has the right to speak and share their voice no matter what their race is. In some countries, there are still racial conflicts and all races.I am also proud to say that every child in America,no matter what their race is, they can have a free education. Most children in other countries are not allowed to go to school because they can’t afford it instead, they go to work
... and in doing so represent their country even more. Trying to be patriotic becomes hard for Brinker when his father wants him not to embarrass himself and do more for the country because Brinker feels that his father doesn?t understand that he is afraid to go to war. Brinker says", He and his crowd are responsible for it and we're going to fight it " (190). This quote shows how agitated Brinker is with his father for trying to tell him to accomplish more in a dangerous war, that Brinker wants nothing to do with, that can possibly lead to his own death. To sum up, patriotism is a necessity in going to war and representing the country because it shows feelings from the fighter to his or her country.
When you look into veterans eyes, you can see several things that are important. The pride shines through, the pride of serving ones country, and the dedication to protect other peoples freedom even it if requires paying the ultimate price. These men and women give their lives to give us our freedom. As a one of the many individuals that they are protecting it is vital that we see that pride and appreciate where it comes from.
For example, Mark Twain expressed his hatred by stating, “A patriot sets himself apart in his own country under his own flag, sneers at other nations and keeps an army of uniformed assassins on hand at heavy expense to grab slices of other people’s countries and keep them from grabbing slices of his. In the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for ‘the universal brotherhood of man’ with his mouth.” Twain makes many valid points by bring up how patriotism encourages hatred and distrust for other countries, promoting war by having an army of assassins, and washing away wrongful violations within the country. Numerous Americans have shown similar controversy in regards to whether they should support patriotism. Despite the fact that patriotism can bring social culture and bonding together, it can ultimately become destructive and does more harm than
I believe that veterans are our nation’s bravest citizens. I also harbor a special adoration for them because my brother is in the Army and he has already served one tour in Iraq, and is currently on his second at the age of nineteen. My family is either very lucky or very blessed because my brother has yet to be injured in active duty. One day, I hope to join the Air Force and, in turn, become a veteran, as well. Veterans can remind us just how horrible war is, and, hopefully, prevent more wars in the future. Veterans have sacrificed so much so that we may have our rights, our leisures, our hopes, our dreams, and, most of all, our freedom. Everyone should honor the veterans of our nation at all times, not just on holidays like Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day during which we are constantly reminded of our forefathers whom gave their lives and so much more for our country. Many of us take things like going for a walk in the park, hanging out with friends, or going to the church of our choice for granted. I think we all need to take a step back and really look at the situations other countries are in right now and the dealings that they are going through. Then maybe we can look at our own country and really see what we have that others don’t, and consider all the lives, limbs, labors, and loves lost for every single aspect of freedom that we have. Our own men, women, and, at times, children have been sacrificed to feed the mouth of the beast that is poverty, oppression, depression, hunger, violence, and greed.
Veterans are a hearty lot. They serve and sacrifice, and having the honor of wearing the uniform is enough thanks for most of them.
Today’s Military Veterans owe a huge debt to the Veterans of the Great War. Not only did they have to battle the Central Powers on the European Battlefields, they had to battle the United States Governments and Army on the Washington D.C. battle field. Their actions paved the way to provide security to those who provided the nation with security.
In times of war, such as these, the importance for everyone to know where they stand on the idea of patriotism so they can voice or enact their opinion to the government and the people around them in a more clear and fair fashion is multiplied. The idea of patriotism can often be an obscure one, and during times of heightened security patriotism is a more spoken upon subject. Discussing the many different views of what patriotism means is a key step in better defining patriotism for all people. Barbara Kingsolver says in her article, “My patriotic duty is to recapture my flag from the men now waving it in the name of jingoism and censorship” (Pg. 2). What she means by this is that the idea of patriotism is being morphed into something it is not. She believes patriotism should encourage free speech and criticism of our leaders in times of difficult decisions. Instead, what is happening is patriotism is suggesting more fascist ideals than democratic ideals. Barbara believes her duty is to recapture the true meaning of patriotism and let everyone know what that meaning is. She wants everyone to feel open towards voicing t...
As time goes, the understanding of the day has changed as well. Much like the original concept of the Purple Heart being an award given for valor and merit before transitioning later to a medal for wounded service members, Veterans Day originated with the same concept as today’s Memorial Day. What is most important to realize is that regardless of what the true definition means to the observer, the purpose behind the day is to remind us all that people put their lives on the line in support of their countries and their fellow man. Their service, their sacrifice, and their dedication to something greater than themselves is honored across the
Veteran’s day is a reflection of the peace and the warrior culture in the United States. While peace cultures strive for tolerance and positive peace, warrior cultures focus on aggression and domination and this Day demonstrates how both cultures are engrained in the American society.
They see themselves as soldiers carrying out a mission that they were called to complete to defend our country. To them, they can’t imagine that anyone else would not do the same. I have never seen my uncle so upset as the day he was told “Happy Veteran’s Day”. Most of what he recalls were not “happy” memories. He would get so aggravated that most Americans do not know the significance and the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. These are just a couple of examples of how nonveterans can educate themselves so that we are able to honor and thank our veterans properly. A simple “thank you for your service” is really all they expect. Taking care of our veterans and their families is our duty as a country. They ARE our American
The moment I visited the veterans seems frozen in time. Tears stream down my face as I listen to the stories. My heart pounds as I think about how they must have felt.Thank you to all veterans for teaching me about my responsibility to America’s future and putting America on the path to
A veteran that died for the sake of Canada's freedom. A veteran that bravely came forward when everyone else backed out to save their lives. A veteran that was once a great father, a supporting son and most importantly a genuine friend. People think that going to war is just signing up for suicide, but all the veterans in the world made a choice. This choice allowed YOU to live safely in a liberated country. The soldiers fought and sacrificed their lives for our happiness, our rights and our freedom. I still remember walking over deceased bodies, over great friends and enemies of mine. Over those innocent people who didn't deserve to die. The sound of mothers' screams when they knew that their children were not going to come back alive, newborns wailing for their parents and the sound of bombs flying over heads of the innocent are still fresh in my mind. I can still see the lives of blameless children flashing before my eyes. Seeing young ones holding newborns, school children with no school and wealthy kids being named as orphans shouldn't be an issue in our world. What did they do? Is going to school and having a family a crime? Just imagine this as your reality while being a soldier. Seeing your family and friends being slaughtered, guiltless children being tortured and risking your life and sanity to go out and brawl for strangers is a veteran's most biggest challenge.
One way to define patriotism is to look at an example of my enlistment in the Army and the training that I received in Basic. I decided to join the Army in 1996 after an unsuccessful attempt at college. I decided I wanted to serve my country by defending our freedom in the event that a war should happen and help other countries abroad defend their freedom also. It was in Basic Training that I was taught hand-to-hand combat, how to accurately fire a M16 machine gun, ground tactics and camouflage. The training I received prepared me to be ready to defend America. I was committed to serve and protect the country where I lived. I was displaying my patriotism for America by defending the freedoms that I and other Americans have in this country.
The United States has long been known for having a military presence that few would dare to challenge. The catalyst has not been in having billions in defense funds, it has not been in having huge weapons of mass destruction, it is the heart and spirit of the soldier. I am very proud to be a part of this long and proud tradition of upholding the ideals set forth in the U.S. Constitution. It is something that I would recommend to all willing and able college students. It instills a sense of pride and satisfaction that is matched by no other. As a soldier, there are many options as far as what type of soldier you wish to be. It is similar to choosing a career in the civilian world. The first step in this process is choosing your military branch. There are four main branches in the military; the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.
