Video games are a game played on consoles with a display such as a monitor or a touchscreen.
People who play video games may get addicted to the game as they continuously play for long periods of time. Some games can cause the player to become frustrated with the game as they are constantly failing or losing, the players may have mental breakdowns and they sometimes get physical. Families that are affected by video games experience loss in money and communication. It is my belief that video games have a negative impact on families, this argumentative Essay will be talking about the negative impacts that video games have on families.
Video game addiction is a problem that many people face when playing games, they can be addicted without knowing but eventually their addiction gets stronger over time and they will realise it. Video game addiction comes from the brain and when the player’s brain comes along a game that has a good reward system that rewards the player. When the brain feels good it wants more, therefore the player continues playing until reality takes over but eventually the player comes back for more. When a member of the family is addicted it causes reality issues within the family. According to Peter Gray ‘Some distraught young man in South Korea plays a video game for fifty straight hours without stopping to sleep or eat, goes into cardiac arrest, and dies. Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. For example, there are many symptoms to being addicted to video games. Children are more liable to become addicted to video games played online with other people than regular games. People can become fatigued when they spend long hours playing video games. Video games can cause migraines because of too much concentration. People might get carpal tunnel syndrome when they play video games on a computer. It causes the main nerve of the hand and forearm to press. They don’t get enough sleep because of not wanting to stop playing the video game. When a person spends long hours of sitting in the same position on a computer, they might get chronic back problems. Gamers might have eating irregularities because they would most likely eat food that is quick and unhealthy. The worst part is when a player chooses not to eat at all. People become isolated from other people because they want to spend more time playing video games. Gamers feel restless when they can’t play. They only think about the games that they have played or will still continue to play. In recent years, technology has developed very rapidly. This has led to many arguably both positive and negative changes in our everyday lives. One such change was the increased accessibility of personal computers and gaming consoles as well as the introduction of numerous video games. Due to their entertainment value, these games gained popularity among children and teenagers. Although many concerns have been voiced related to playing video games, especially those that are violent, [e.g., increases in aggressive behavior in children (Anderson & Bushman, 2001)], this paper will argue that certain video games also have beneficial effects. A solution to the game addiction problem would be simply prevent the person from accessing the game, but that also causes major problems. Brett, a gamer addict, thought of suicide when he wasn’t allowed to play his video game. He states, “At the time [I] felt anything had to be better than not being allowed to play Counter Strike” (DAnastasio). Brett ended up getting depression and started failing his classes. Brett cut himself away from the world and won’t even come out of the room. Excessive gaming can also “. . . induce pseudo hallucinatory-like experiences” (Clark).
