It’s the single most amazing piece of technology ever created. It has changed my life and all the world’s lives so dramatically. The VirtNet is a virtual reality video game network, and it seems so real that no one could ever tell the difference. I’m one of the best gamers on the VirtNet. I’ve basically mastered the art of coding and hacking, and it allows me to do literally anything I want. You name it. The VirtNet has done a remarkable job to attract anyone to join it because of all the possibilities available. You can eat the most calorie rich foods and never get fat, travel anywhere your heart desires, do literally any activity no matter how old you might be, and meet thousands of people along the way. You could say it’s anyone’s paradise, and it really is. The dreary real world has limitations, and its kind of nasty and dirty anyway. I’ve gotten so obsessed with my virtual reality that the only reason I ever get off is to eat (the other problems you might think of are already taken care of). I might even spend more time in the VirtNet than the real world. So, I’m a really experienced gamer, with a ton of …show more content…
Sometimes instead of hackers trying to hack into different kinds of stores the VirtNet provides, they hack into people instead. This was a giant problem, and I was hired to fix it. I can safely say it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and the most life-altering thing I’ve ever done. Also, there have been cases of traumatic stress disorders because the games provided in the VirtNet are so intense and realistic. Lot’s of people play extremely violent games or scary games, and because it’s so real it can really lay a mark on you just as if you fought in real wars. So there's a lot of danger for me and everyone else inside the VirtNet, so I know I have to be smart, and I think I have been. But, of course, not everybody will be smart and take responsibility of their immense
Many fatal consequences, caused by illogical reactions to problematic situations, can be avoided through a few easy, simple and “common sense” steps. In the essay “Deadly Mind Traps” author Jeff Wise writes to the everyday man and woman. Mr. Wise in his essay explains how the average person can make deadly mistakes even though logically they make little sense. Wise, offers multiple key terms to help the reader better understand his reasoning for his thesis. As well as, Wise produces multiple examples for the reader to connect the key terms to real life situations. Moreover, Wise not only gives key terms and examples to support his thesis he also gives examples of how to stay out of those situations. Wise from his essay demonstrates that his reader is an everyday person by using words such as we, us, you and our. And he uses everyday simplified words and terms which suggest inclusion instead of exclusion.
In this book Sterling discusses three cyberspace subcultures known as the hacker underworld, the realm of the cyber cops, and the idealistic culture for the cyber civil libertarians. At the beginning of the story Sterling starts out with discussing the birth of cyberspace and how it came about. The Hacker Crackdown informs the readers of the issues surrounding computer crime and the people on all sides of those problems. Sterling gives a brief summary of what cyberspace meant back then and how it impacted society, and he investigates the past, present and future of computer crimes. For instance he explains how the invention of the telephone led to a world that people were scared of because the telephone was something that was able to let people talk to one another without actually being in the same area. People thought that it was so strange and so different because they didn’t understand all of the information behind it. Back then people thought of the telephone as a tool that allowed others to talk to them in a way that was so personal yet impersonal. Sterling then goes on to explain how “phone phreaks” played such an important part in relating the telephones to computer crimes and how they were so closely related back then.
The documentary discusses different types of hackers; teenagers hacking as a prank and professionals hacking to disrupt nuclear advancement in Iran. This is in some ways related to the macro-level theory of train theory concerning subcultures in gangs (Choi, Week 3). This theory was the differential opportunity theory, which described how gangs met their goals through legitimate or illegitimate means (Choi, Week 3). The teenage hackers would be classified more in the criminal gangs scoring range as they were able to meet their goal of pranking their victim through illegitimate means. In the case of the nuclear facility incident in Iran with stuxnet, these types of hackers could be viewed as violent gang members. While the methods used would traditionally be considered illegal, due to the fact that the virus seemed to be sanctioned by some country, the means may have been
...g it. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “nothing in the world is more dangerous than a sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
The traditional way of socializing limits our ability to meet other people around the world. Virtual interactions offers a more possible means to communicate in today's society. Furthermore, the growth of the video game community such as in the genre of MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) allows for a high level medium that enable individuals to create small factions and perform social interactions. According to Bishop, "The existence of such communities is often brought about by people who share similar goals, beliefs or values, with such commonality forming the basis of an agreement to form and sustain a virtual existence" (1). Having shared similar goals...
Hacking has been around since the birth of computers. When the term hacking was first used, its meaning was not that of how we think of it today. At the origins of computing, a hacker was considered to be just a "creative programmer (Baase, 2003)." Early forms of computer games as well as the beginnings of operating systems were discovered and created by these original hackers. These hackers plunged into systems as a way of an intellectual challenge and to aspire to gain knowledge (Baase, 2003). Kevin Mitnick believes he falls into this realm of hackers. Hackers in today's era are now looked upon as criminals who invade the privacy rights of individuals and have the ability to deliver worms/viruses. The differences are that hackers today have full intentions of delivering terrible viruses and worms. Mitnick was one of the most infamous hackers during the 1980's. He molded his hacking style around the stupidity of humans and his quest for intellectual knowledge. The ways in which he wiggled his way into computer systems extenuates many of the issues surrounding computer security and privacy.
Individuals may feel isolated from society wether it be due to their sexuality, likes, or dislikes, and the virtual world is an area they do not feel like they have to conform to certain ...
