Freedom should be repeatedly earned in to prevent depreciation and fit the needs of future complications. Winning freedom in every generation will allow each generation to experience and learn the struggles of winning freedom, appreciate the true value of freedom, and have freedoms that fit the needs of the future. When people see freedom as something permanently there for them, they begin to devalue it, taking these freedoms and rights for granted. Whether it is purposely or subconsciously, people will begin to think less and less about the accomplishments past generations have made. Some may abuse that power they have while others may just think of it as something conventional or the norm. Knowing that something is permanent causes many to take advantage of the fact that such freedoms won’t be taken away. Freedom that is permanent will not mean the same to future generations as it had to past generations. Through time, the meaning of freedom changes as new and old …show more content…
Though this may seem like a dependable point, it is illogical as freedom can be taken for granted and all that effort is put to waste anyways. As time goes by, these accomplishments will be less valued as to future generations, such freedoms would be common and customary. This is just like how people in the United States or any other modernized country is. Many citizens of the United States take basic freedoms such as the freedom of speech or freedom to vote for granted (particularly newer generations) as they think of it as something permanent, something that will always be there for them. They’ll never truly understand the struggle and effort put into gaining these freedoms thus never truly appreciating them. Unless they are won repeatedly, the efforts of leaders, organizations, and such would be not only put to waste but also put in
With freedom comes great responsibility. This saying has been heard by generations of kids and has been said by generations of parents. Unfortunately people today don?t seem to be responsible in certain things they do. You see things in media today that make you wonder when you draw the line on things you say and do. William Golding the author of Lord of The Flies conveys this thought in the story of the boys stuck on the island where they have complete freedom to do whatever they want to do. They no longer had adults to tell them what and how to do things. The story just proves that when people are irresponsible and freedom gets abused that very bad things can happen.
In today’s society, these themes are still dominant. While some view freedom as a responsibility, others take advantage of the privilege. Those with a survival of the fittest attitude do what they want, when they want, in order to get what they want. People with individual conscience believe they have the privilege to do what is right, whether it be for themselves or for others. Unfortunately, those who search for freedom are usually seeking it from those who take advantage of it. While freedom comes with a cost, every American should be able to enjoy their own freedoms and liberties without anyone restricting them.
The prompt for this essay is, “Does freedom need to be won more than once?” In my opinion, it does and it has to be won with every generation. I think even though there are laws ensuring our rights, they are not always upheld. For example, women and men are supposed to be equal, but in some situations they get paid less. In this essay, I will argue that our freedoms must continually be earned. For instance, the Revolutionary War was fought to gain independence from Britain, the Civil War was fought to abolish slavery, and the Women’s Suffrage Movement in the 1910s to 1920s was aimed to allow women to vote.
Everyday we have the chance to make her own opinions and give reason to our own voice. We have the chance to live in a country that encourages freedom in society, which separate ourselves from any restrictions imposed upon by authority, actions or any political views. liberty is the power we possess to act as we please through freedom and independence. But what happens when we choose to give away our basic liberties for temporary safety? Benjamin Franklin once stated, “They who give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Those who decide to give away their personal freedoms for something that is temporary do not see the value in the long-lasting gift called freedom. The publicity stunt featured on the 1959 cover of Life magazine would have been a very odd scene for today’s society. The popular magazine displayed a photo of a young couple about to embark on their very own “sheltered honeymoon” (May 1). The happy newlyweds were captured posing in their backyard lawn dressed in acceptable honeymoon attire surrounded by an array of foods, utensils, and other commodities that would be brought with them down into the bomb shelter for the duration of their honeymoon. The profound concept of a honeymoon being spent underground in a confined space is fascinating in a strange way. What caused society to feel that this would be an appropriate cover to “Life” during the 1950s? In short, what Americans craved during
“Posterity! you will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it.”- John Adams. (“John Adams Quotes”)
The idea of freedom, that America, founded its principles on, has not always successfully held up. Undoubtedly when our country first started, we had the idea in mind, that our constitution would protect the needs of its people, even as those needs alter; therefore it’s wording needed to be, ductile and interpretive. In recent years, this plasticity has become functional and fair, yet in the past, politicians used it to give and revoke, power, to and from people. Prior to the civil war, though it helped spark many of the social/civil revolution we know today, liberty and freedom were a luxury enjoyed by a few people. Woman, non-whites, and low-income people had their liberties denied, questioned or altogether abolished. However these same groups
Many believe that freedom is being able to do and say whatever you'd like without consequences. In ways this may be true but, when we say or do things that are against rules or that challenge society we might find ourselves in trouble. But if we don't challenge society or anything else for that matter we find ourselves stuck without change. Leading to the idea that the true meaning of freedom is being able to speak up for what you believe in; Whether it results in punishment or not. If that's what you believe in then preach it all you want. Our government might have the authority to take away our freedom by locking us away or finding another form of punishment. We find that freedom is a recurring theme in our MyPerspective
Who likes to be watched? “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they rebelled they cannot become conscious.” The party in 1984 is a system of spies who control everything in Oceania. Winston rebels for his desires. Julia rebels for her pleasure. O’brien rebels to gain trust and then betray. In George Orwell's book, 1984, he shows the importance of freedom, the pain of being controlled, and the hurt from being betrayed.
Freedom in the United States Essay submitted by Unknown No other democratic society in the world permits personal freedoms to the degree of the United States of America. Within the last sixty years, American courts, especially the Supreme Court, have developed a set of legal doctrines that thoroughly protect all forms of the freedom of expression. When it comes to evaluating the degree to which we take advantage of the opportunity to express our opinions, some members of society may be guilty of violating the bounds of the First Amendment by publicly offending others through obscenity or racism. Americans have developed a distinct disposition toward the freedom of expression throughout history. The First Amendment clearly voices a great American respect for the freedom of religion.
Freedom remains the sole basis for American society as we know it. Without freedom the great nation of America would have never been founded. To understand the true principles of freedom, one must understand the scope of the word. Philosophical freedom encompasses the ability to make choices without restraints, while political freedom is the state of being free rather than in physical confinement. Despite the importance of these ideas to our founding fathers, freedom has lost much of its importance in modern American society. The failure to stress the importance of freedom has diminished the quality of life for the entire American populous
Throughout history freedom has had many different meanings and definitions; based on race, gender, and ethnicity. According to the dictionary freedom means the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint (“freedom” def. 1). Freedom may seem like something given to everyone however it was something workers had to fight for. Not everyone believed that workers’ rights needed to be changed, which led to a long battle between workers, employers and the government. To the working class people freedom meant making higher wages, having regulated hours, workable conditions and the right to free speech.
The American Ideological Consensus is that “…the American people have shared much of the same ideals, the same basic principles, and the same patterns of belief” (McClenaghan 104). When America filled itself with ideologically homogenous people, their beliefs started to define our nation and became American identities. If asked what they think of America, peoples of other nations would say that the roads are made of glass, opportunity is in the air, and civil rights are plentiful. These accounts maybe accentuated; however, the underlying message is that the American people have more freedoms then the peoples of other nations do. The most widely known American identity is freedom, and even though that American identity has been tried and tested throughout much of its history, it can still be said that America is a land of liberty.
Because our nation has such control, many people take our freedom for advantage. People need to appreciate each and everything given to us, from the chair you sit in now, to the heart that is beating in your chest.
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United states once said, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” His words mean America is and is meant to be a free, great country, but when all of us that are free start to fight, our freedom will start to diminish because of ourselves. Freedom is one of the most important aspects of life in America. There are many parts to freedom that make it so important.
