The American Dream promises freedom and equality, however, it often remains unattainable for people in poverty and marginalized groups. In August Wilson’s play Fences, Troy Maxson is coming to terms with how he didn’t live out his dreams. Troy was once a baseball player who is now a trash truck driver, struggling to live without making it pro. Troy holds extremely strict beliefs about masculinity and believes responsibility comes first. These beliefs lead to many conflicts and tensions in his family, especially with his son Cory. In Fences Troy Maxson does not get his American dream due to racism, his personal mistakes, and pressure from society preventing him from finding his true happiness. In Troy’s life, racism plays a key role, reducing his opportunities and helping create what his world looks like. When Troy was younger, he was a great baseball player, showing talent that could compete with a lot of major league talent. However, racial prejudice in the major leagues during Troy’s best years prevented him from making it. This racism was a big barrier that blocked his path to the pros and having financial success, which Troy thought were important as James E. As a black man, throughout Troy's life, he had to deal with racial discrimination. He had limited job opportunities due to the discrimination, most of which were very low paying. Troy’s job as a garbage collector was due to the company not allowing black men to drive the trash trucks. So, Troy had to fight to be able to get a better job by talking to the boss. The roles that society put on men, that they had to be the providers and the protectors, added to his pressure. These roles increase Troy’s frustrations and shape the choices he makes.
