Have you ever spent 20 years trying to get home to your family but got faced with many setbacks? This is exactly what Odysseus in “The Odyssey”, by Homer went through. “The Odyssey” is an epic poem about Odysseus traveling back to his family over a span of 20 years. “The Odyssey”, an epic poem by Homer, shows up in pop culture for good reasons to show and recycle the storyline of such a famous story. One of the most Odyssey-influenced areas of pop culture are movies and TV shows. Since “The Odyssey” can be found in references from many movies and TV shows, it can help new viewers understand the importance and storyline behind “The Odyssey” without reading “The Odyssey”. In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus experiences the same thing as Ulysses except he is tied up so he can't fall victim to the siren's song like Ulysses did. Another reference show is that both main characters are traveling to reach their end goal, but face many hardships along the way. The movie Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters (Rosenfelt, Karen) has two very similar references to “The Odyssey”. In Percy Jackson, the main character Percy has to fight Polyphemus to help his Grover escape. In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus also has to fight Polyphemus to help his crew escape from Polyphemus's cave. The last reference from Percy Jackson, the sea of monsters, is when Percy and his crew have to deal with the sea monster Charybdids. The seamonster attempts to eat and kill Percy and his crew, which also happens in “The Odyssey” to Odysseus and his crew.
