Silver Lining Playbook is a movie about Pat Solitano, a man who suffers from Undiagnosed Bipolar Disorder. After having spent 8 months in a mental institution following a violent act involving his wife and another man, Pat is released into his parent’s care. He wants to reconcile with his wife, but along the way meets Tiffany, a woman that is willing to help Pat find his wife. After a lot of efforts and significant lifestyle changes, Pat is able to put the past behind him and control his illness. In Silver Lining Playbook, Pat’s Bipolar Disorder is manifested during the wedding video scene. Pat starts looking for his wedding video but is unable to find it. He then wakes up his parents in the middle of the night to ask them where it was, but …show more content…
ends up losing it and starts yelling and acting violent. Another scene is the book scene. When Pat finishes the Hemmingway book, angry at the ending, he swears and throws the book through the window. He then goes on to his parents’ room where tells them about the ending in a really fast speech. I also decided to look at Homeland, and especially Season 1.
Carrie Mathison is the main character of the series. She is a CIA operative suffering from Bipolar I disorder. Her illness makes her obsessed with her suspect, Nicholas Brody. In episode 11:”The vest”, Carrie, while at the hospital, shows signs of mania as she is seeking a Green Pen. She loses control as she asks the nurse for a green pen. She was being extremely talkative. We also see her symptoms in episode 1:“Pilot”. Carrie, after an argument with Saul, breaks down and starts crying, showing signs of depression. However, she suddenly turns manic, gets dressed, and goes to a bar to pick up a man. This scene gave us a great example of what Bipolar disorder is. In Silver Lining Playbook, Pat exhibits manic episodes: periods of abnormally irritable mood. His symptoms are: decreased need for sleep, grandiosity, and pressured speech. According to the DSM-V criteria, we can confidently say that Pat suffers from manic episodes since he shows 3 of the symptoms. Even though the movie doesn’t explicitly show it, we can deduce he is also depressed. The combination of both allows us to come to the conclusion that Pat suffers from Bipolar Disorder. This diagnosis seems justified. If I was this person’s therapist, I would be confident and certain in the
diagnosis. In Homeland, Carrie expresses depression symptoms in various episodes, even though the DSM-V does not allow us to say that she suffers from Major Depression (we do not see 5 or more of the symptoms). However her manic episodes are clear, in the first episode, when she leaves to a bar to find a one night stand, we can see inflated self-esteem, and we can categorize this activity as pleasure seeking. The scene of her at the hospital clearly shows the fast paced and disorganized speech of mania. The character has 3 of the symptoms of mania, we can confidently diagnose her. The diagnosis of Bipolar 1 (depression + mania) is therefore justified. If I was this person’s therapist, I would be confident in saying she suffers from Bipolar disorder. Both characters are showing similar symptoms, they are both having manic attacks characterized by pressured/disorganized speeches and both suffer from depression. However, not all they symptoms are the same and some differ. Pat’s manic attacks are expressed through violence, and he experiences grandiosity and decreased need of sleep. Carrie’s manic attacks are not violent, they seem more controlled and, in my opinion, here to compensate depression; she goes to a bar as a pleasure seeking activity. She shows impulsivity and engages in risky behaviors. I think both characters provide an accurate portrayal of the disorder. Homeland clearly shows the symptoms, whereas Silver Lining Playbook shows the uncontrollable side. In Silver Lining Playbook, Pat does receive treatments. He is on psychotherapy, medication (mood stabilizers), and also has a case worker (Police officer). Pat’s disorder seems to become more manageable as he starts taking medication, implying the treatment is successful. Depression medications are effective in regulating Serotonin and Norepinephrine levels, but we also learned that simple salts such as lithium can be used to increase the amount of serotonin. In Homeland, Carrie is on antipsychotics that acts on her serotonin receptors. At the end of season 1, she decides to undergo electro-convulsive treatment to achieve some stability. Based on what we learn the medication is the best treatment, however, the ECT seemed to have worked the best on her and seems the most effective. In Later seasons, she will also start self-medicating with exercises. Both character use medication that regulates neurotransmitters to help fight bipolar disorder. Their treatments differ in the way that Pat also finds help in love, while Carries undergoes ECT. Silver Lining Playbook shows that those who suffer mental disorders aren’t much different from us. This allows us to relate to the characters more and allows us to witness what it is like to suffer from bipolar disorder. The movie’s goal isn’t to present Pat as a victim, but to relate him to us to raise awareness. We often see mental illnesses being portrayed as negative in the news, this movie shows us a more positive side of life with bipolar disorder. However, Silver Lining Playbook tends to send the message that medication and love cures the disorder, one can argue that it isn’t as simple as that. Bipolarity in Homeland gives details about the symptoms and treatments. We are able to see Carrie’s manic episodes and also her depressive episodes. Homeland can also give hopes to patients suffering from that illness, they are able to see someone doing great things even though they have a disorder. Not only does Homeland raises awareness of bipolar disorder, it can also be seen as motivation and help for those suffering of the illness.
Throughout the movie, Pat displays signs and symptoms of Bipolar I disorder. He has moods swings that go back and forth between manic episodes and depressed episodes. We see the manic episodes with his aggressive behavior, easy irritation, increased physical activity (always out jogging in the neighborhood), lack of sleep, and very poor

Speaking from personal experience in dealing with a mentally unhealthy adult that is bipolar, that is unable to think rationally and that lives in a fantasy world made up of lies and paranoia, Eleanor showed all the same traits. Certain events that may have taken place in her life might have kicked her mind into a different unhealthy state, such as isolation from the world due to taking care of her ill mother or even the death of her father when she was a small child. There could be a multitude of things that could have set her mind into the very different and unhealthy state of mind that she was in, therefore, causing her to take her own

She was taken to the hospital after she tried to commit suicide, she took a bottle of aspirin. Her reason for taking the full bottle of aspirin was a major headache, which was also alarming to the psychiatrist. The psychiatrist recommended that she be admitted to a mental hospital for women, where she can rest and recover. Another sign of the Borderline Personality Disorder is casual sexuality.
