All around the southeast U.S. Coast thousands of hatchling turtles emerge from their nests and enter the Atlantic Ocean. However, even at birth, sea turtles struggle with survival sometimes due to natural threats. Predators such as raccoons, crabs, and birds raid eggs and hatchlings. Sadly, the biggest threats to these majestic creatures are caused by humans. In many coastal communities, such as in Central America and Asia use sea turtles as a source of food, even though in many cultures, including these, sea turtles have spiritual or mythological importance. Pollution not only have an impact on the sea turtles themselves but also their food they eat. An example is how research suggests that a disease called fibro papilloma now killing many sea turtles may be linked to pollution in the oceans and in near shore waters. This human threat destroys feeding habitats for sea turtles due to the fact that pollution contaminates and kills aquatic plant and animal life. Estimated 36 percent of all marine pollution from all comes through drains and rivers from cities. Fertilizers are another huge marine pollutant. Farms and lawns cause runoff causing and explosion of algal blooms that can deplete the waters oxygen and suffocate marine life which is called eutrophication. Another cause of this is improper sewage disposal. Instead of pollutants becoming diluted and dispersed to safe levels, some toxins become more concentrated as the break down and enter the food chain. For example, plankton absorb those chemicals s they feed, then the chemicals accumulate in these animals’ bodies, which makes the toxins much more concentrated than in the surrounding water. The efforts taking place through different conservation organizations and the State of Florida are making a mixed impact on the survival of Manatees and Sea Turtles. The decline in manatee population has decreased, but due to low reproduction rates, more needs to be done to avoid extinction. The sea turtle outlook is more species specific. Some species of turtle are seeing stabilization in population, while others are not. The State of Florida has a large array of custom license tags that support the conservation efforts taking place within the State. The proceeds go to benefit the local marine life in Florida. With financial resources, state and local cooperation, and through constant research and observation, we are able to learn more about both of these gentle animals. Whenever Brian needed food he had found a snapping turtle that laid eggs by the lake he was near. First, here are some basic facts about turtles: turtles are cold-blooded, which means that they cannot raise or lower their body temperature. Their body temperature reflects the temperature of the surrounding air or water. Turtles date back to around two hundred million years ago. Having over forty nine species of turtles, they can live both in water and on land. The top shell, referred to as carapace, of land a turtle are over-grown and makes the ribs wider. Beneath the top shell is the lower shell, referred to as plastron. Both of the shells protect the turtle from other animals and their environment. Thus, turtles have developed long necks and an unusual way of getting air in and out of their lungs. A turtle’s neck forms a tight S-shaped bend, and the curve becomes shallow as the neck extends (Smith and Zim, 18). Also, having modifying their bodies, turtle legs are attached within their ribs. The unique structure of turtles has made them long-lived and unusual specie.
Aquatic species are having these chemicals and debris forced upon them against their will. As stated in the article “Combined Sewer Overflows” the treatment plants cannot handle the income of water and the trash in it, so they push the water and the trash out into the ocean (“Combined Sewer Overflows”). Because humans are not able to handle the event aquatic species are being tangled up in or choking on all the garbage and trash from humans. Oil spills are another case were animals are the victims of human actions. "As little as one part of oil per million parts of water can be detrimental to the reproduction and growth of fish, crustaceans, and plankton” (“Threats to Aquatic Environments”). Even the slightest amount of oil will affect the life of any aquatic species. Oil spills also block sunlight, because oil is lighter that water the oil just sits on top of the water (“Threats to Aquatic Environments”). When the oil sits like this it blocks the sun from aquatic plants and kills them. Another problem caused is when aquatic plants are dying they are sinking down to the floor of the water, suffocating the other organisms that cannot move quickly or at all. Oil spills have been devastating to many species for years. Since Loggerheads transport nutrients from oceans to beaches through their migrations and nesting they increase the rate of nutrient recycling in benthic, ocean bottom, ecosystems (Wilson et al. 2010). Many of the methods used in commercial fishing are very destructive to the aquatic systems. Industrial ocean trawlers scrape the bottom of the water, often dragging up the seafloor with them. This destroys the habitat and kills many of the bottom dwelling organisms that are vulnerable to these practices. There is also a large amount of marine animals that are unintentionally caught by the large nets. These animals are considered bycatch, having no value to fishermen and are usually killed. Pollution of recyclable materials in the oceans is one of the leading causes of why some marine species are nearing extinction. Many authors of articles and books analyzing this topic tend to agree that pollution of our oceans is a problem. The future of this problem is where their ideas tend to differ. The following four literature reviews attempt to demonstrate and support my belief that pollution is getting worse in the ocean and more marine life ecosystems are being affected, but there are things that we as humans can do to change this. Transportation is a big issue with pollution. Vehicles create smog, catalysts for ozone, and components for acid rain. Smog contains a chemical called ozone. Ozone can seriously affect a human’s health. It reacts with the molecules in the lining of our airways. This then causes inflammation. Acid rain has many ecological effects, but none is as bad as its impact on lakes, streams, wetlands and other bodies of water. Acid rain makes waters acidic, which causes them to absorb the aluminium that goes from soil into water. When bodies of water become more acidic, the numbers and species of fish and other organisms living in the water begin to decrease. There are many examples of water pollution. Raw sewage running into water, industrial waste spills, and exhaust fumes from vehicles. A big problem with raw sewage is that Bacteria use up oxygen in the water, as they decompose the organic material in the water. The lack of oxygen kills animals and other organisms that live in the water. Many harmful chemicals are in industrial waste. These can become drinking water pollutants if not well managed. Car exhaust creates a wide range of gases and solid matter. This causes global warming, acid rain, and it harms the environment and human health. Engine noise and oil spills also cause pollution.
