Can you imagine an ocean full of trash and plastic just floating, drifting, being carried effortlessly through the water? The sea creatures thinking the trash is food and eating it, consequently they are shortly after dying from consuming too much of the detritus. The marine life is suffering because their home is always full of trash as well as it being contaminated. They aren’t able to do anything about it. Can this really happen to the environment around us? Have people ever thought about this horrible problem and wanted to do something about it? This is actually what our world is facing right now. Progressively debris is ending up in the water, harming our beautiful blue ocean in addition to killing the sea life. No one is thinking about where their trash is going as well as how much it’s really harming the innocent marine life. Not only their trash, but also chemicals and other residential waste are going into the majestic deep blue sea. Everyone needs to do something to stop having all the trash go into the water polluting it. Ocean pollution is the cause of why all this trash as well as other dangerous things are ending up in the water. The marine life doesn’t have a voice to stop this happening to their home, but we do. We areresponsible for 80% of it, and if we bring that number down- even just a little bit of it- it will help a lot. Different bans on dumping waste has helped a lot and prevented a possible speed of ocean pollution, and slowed the process down. Different corporations are trying to benifit both the ocean and their companies by recycling usable items and making them into something new. I couldnt figure out why ocean pollution happens, but i found so many different ways it does happen, from land runoff to the tiny microplastic beads in body scrubs.
Ocean Pollution is a serious issue in today's global politics. The delicate balance of Earth's ecosystem is put in jeopardy when the ocean is not clean. Problem evolving from ocean pollution directly harm marine life and indirectly affect human health and the Earth's many valuable resources. Ocean Pollution is a Broad term that encpompasses any and all foregin matter that directly or indirectly makes its way into the ocean. This includes everything from the extreme: oil spills, Toxic Waste dumping and industrial dumping-- to the small scael: human activities and basic carelessness. Because the oceans and all other water bodies are invariably, somehow connected, and because they account for 3/4 of the Earth's surface, they are an ideal method of transportation for pollution, allowing the rapid spread of seemingly far away toxins into a river near you! It is increasingly important that we educate ourselves as to what, exactly, ocean pollution is, so that we can identify the causes at their source and take action in small and large ways, and hopefully, prevent this terrible form of pollution from getting any worse than it is today.
Our oceans take a large beating every day by the extremely large amount of pollution humans produce. Our society easily dumps their waste into the oceans to dispose of the excessive amount of garbage, sewage, and chemicals, but this small and simple solution is creating an even bigger problem. The way humans dispose of their wastes is causing the death of our beloved marine life. Not only are we killing off our animals, our food source, and our resources, we are also minimizing our usable water. By having a better understanding of the problem on the severe dumping, it will be easier to find ways to help minimize the pollution that is going into the ocean.
The ocean is an abundant source of life. It is home to thousand of different creatures, provides a great source of food, and provides the earth with about one half of the oxygen needed to sustain life. (National Geographic) Pollution especially plastic, is a catastrophic problem. Ironically plastic, which is a material designed to last forever is generally used for things we tend to throw away. Every year about one hundred to two hundred billion pounds of plastic are manufactured. Only 31% of that plastic is actually recycled. Biomass packaging estimates 10% of that plastic ends up in the ocean annually. About 20% of it coming from ships and other platforms, and the other 80% coming from land derived sources, such as international garbage dumping, winds or tides either way it finds its way to the ocean.(Biomass Packaging Co., et al)
Over the past several decades, there has been an observable increase in the amount of marine debris that has been accumulating in the world’s oceans. This debris has both marine and terrestrial sources that are both distant and local to accumulation sites. The consequences of the marine debris have numerous and varied effects upon the habitats and ecosystems in which it enters. The issues associated with such pollution are entanglement, ingestion and smothering, as well as the phenomena of “hitch-hiking,” “hanger-on” and the introduction of “alien” species into distant ecosystems. Other issues are those that have direct impacts on human industries such as hazards to shipping, fisheries and coastal recreational activities. Most of debris consists of non-biodegradable plastics and synthetic materials that can remain in marine systems indefinitely. This type of debris is known to attract biota due to it free-floating ability. This buoyancy is ultimately responsible for the distribution of potentially dangerous invasive species into high-risk coastal habitats. Within the review, Gregory addresses the primary issues associated with this marine pollution and the potential widespread unseen, and often overlooked effects that this type of debris has marine systems.
The main source of pollution in the ocean that Oceana tackles is plastic pollution. Research from the University of California San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography said that species in the ocean consume a projected 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic every year in the Pacific Ocean (Nall, 2014). Pollution of recyclable materials in the oceans is one of the leading causes of why some marine species are nearing extinction. Many authors of articles and books analyzing this topic tend to agree that pollution of our oceans is a problem. The future of this problem is where their ideas tend to differ. The following four literature reviews attempt to demonstrate and support my belief that pollution is getting worse in the ocean and more marine life ecosystems are being affected, but there are things that we as humans can do to change this. What we should do about it is put a lot of trash cans by the ocean. Having all this trash in the ocean really is unnecessary. We could possible make a big net and tie it on a helicopter and pick up the trash like that. People can die by having all this trash in the ocean. I just don’t understand why people don’t care where there trash goes so they put it where ever they want. We can probably not allow any food or drink or bags get on the beach unless its items that people need. It’s just so hard to try to keep it clean because everyone doesn’t care about their trash. If anybody doesn’t pick up their trash, nobody is going to pick up their trash. People think because there’s trash flying around the beach that it’s ok for their trash to fly around also. Oceans generate ½ the oxygen people breath. Air pollution is responsible for 33% of the toxic contaminants that end up in oceans and coastal waters. When factories produce smoke, the smoke ends up being trapped in the ocean, contributing to the dead spots. The oceans need to be protected because it is where life began and if not taken care of, life as we know it will end. When dangerous substances go into the ocean, ecosystems are suffer and become endangered along with lives of people and of marine life. There is also historical evidence of ocean pollution being present in the past, but the problem still lingers today. Heal the Bay discovered that,“Did you know there is a DDT and PCB hot spot off the coast of Palos Verdes? This superfund site (which indicates it's one of the most polluted places in the United States), is left over from a 1930's era chemical plant. Because DDT takes so long to break down in the marine environment, it persists to this day, contaminating certain species of fish. There are also highly polluted sediments in the Long Beach area, a sign of the heavy shipping in the port. Heal the Bay works on developing effective capping and removal plans to keep those toxins from spreading” (Heal the Bay). DDT is still highly concentrated in the South Bay area and still contaminating different species of fish. Even after more than 80 years DDT, a toxic insecticide, is still very concentrated and during upwellings, DDT particles come back up and continue to harm marine life. If humans are careless about what is thrown on the floor or sprayed on lawns, it can lead to disastrous affects when it comes to the condition of the ocean's ecosystems, and can endanger life itself leading to a problem that only we can mend.
