Could you imagine having to kill your best friend so you can save them from their own actions? Would you do it given the circumstances? In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, two long time friends George and Lennie start their new job at a ranch. George comes up with a brilliant idea to buy his own land. Although, Lennie seems to get in the way of George’s plans. At the end of the story Lennie does something really bad and George is forced to end his and Lennie’s suffering by killing Lennie. George was correct in his actions when he killed Lennie. Given the circumstances and the setting, George did the right thing by killing Lennie.
Would you be able to kill your lifelong companion? George Milton had to make that choice in John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men. After a whole bunch of misadventures with his mentally handicapped giant, Lennie Small. Lennie accidently murdered a woman out of innocence. While the ranch men search for Lennie, George made the decision to give Lennie a merciful death. I believe that George should have killed Lennie because he would have been put in an institution, Curley would have been cruel to him, and George had to give him a merciful death.

George didn’t have to kill Lennie, they could have run away from the mob that was chasing them, for George got to Lennie before anyone else did. They had time to escape. That quote basically describes Lennie and George's relationship to each other. Murder is something done with anger and to end a person’s life that should have not been ended. George had all the aspects of a murderer, he basically planned the murder of Lennie Small. George was not even accused for killing Lennie, everyone was happy and that is not right. Also George should have let Lennie escape to the cave and let Lennie live freely. Being said, George in all right, should be considered a murderer and not a savior.

In Of Mice and Men, George Milton sacrifices a stable life for his friend, Lennie Small. Lennie often gets himself into trouble, which makes it necessary for George and Lennie to run away together. This occurred once in Weed, the place of George and Lennie’s previous jobs. Lennie tried to touch a girl’s dress, but this scared her and caused her to scream. The girl’s scream made Lennie scared, so he held on to the dress. Because of this, the girl accused Lennie of raping her. George had to give up his job to run away with Lennie so Lennie would be safe. George often expresses how much he sacrifices for Lennie, and at one point he says, “I could go into town and get whatever I want…You keep me in hot water all of the time” (11). George says this because he is frustrated, but he loves Lennie so he sticks with him through thick and thin. The ultimate sacrifice from George comes when he decides to kill Lennie after Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife. George knows that by killing Lennie, he will lose his best friend. However, George also knows that if he does not kill Lennie, Curley will torture Lennie to a slow and painful death. Because of this, George shoots Lennie in the back of the neck so he can die a quick and painless death. A friend of mine, Zack, also made sacrifices for his friend. Zack had a meeting in Washington D.C. to attend that would definitely have accelerated his career. He excitedly planned for this meeting for over a year. However, as the meeting was approaching in a few months, his best friend was diagnosed with cancer and was given only a few months to live....
Even though the book has its rough spots, Steinbeck portrays the true bond of friendship that even people as close as siblings have. Throughout the story, George and Lennie stand up for each other, understand one another, and George always knows what is best for Lennie. George did not want to kill Lennie, but at the same time, he did not want him to have to suffer the horrible consequences; he knew that Lennie’s death would be beneficial to Lennie in the future. Furthermore, George knew what was best for Lennie and decided to kill him for his own good.
