In the article, El Niño: Pacific wind and Current Changes Bring warm, Wild Weather by Mike Carlowicz and Stephanie Schollaert Uz they study the patterns and event changes that happens in one place and can affect life half a world away with a sudden change to the ecosystem. It is able to make half a world have wetter season and another be dryer than the dessert. It was found to not be produced by climate change but it is a factor that has caused the oceans to heat up. El niño was first discovered when fishermen off of the west coast of south america, first noticed unusual appearances of warm water towards the end of the year which usually would have occurred during christmas eve. Due to the appearance of warm water during this time, they named this phenomenon El niño, spanish for “ a boy child” because of baby Jesus. According to the Geosystems textbook, Peruvians named it El niño because the episodes tended to occur around the same time during the celebration of baby Jesus on christmas eve. Scientist did not start recording the history of El niño until the 1500s. This phenomenon has also been found to have a “sister” la nina which is when the oceans start to warm up. El niño happens more often than la nina, because it usually forms in the summer, gets stronger around the winter months and wither away between spring, which is where the waters tend to cool off through that season.
