There are many issues of concern within our families. Some families are experiencing addiction problems with one or more of their members. Other families are going through situations of depression and suicidal attempts. As social workers we need to be aware what is going on with our families. We need to understand their situations and be able to provide the tools and resources that will benefit them. In this particular case, the focus will be made in a particular individual whose daily struggles are been creating conflict with the environment she interacts with. This individual has experienced several tragedies in her life. These tragedies had caused this individual to depressed and feel hopeless about life. Some of the treatments are more effective than others. Some treatments are measured by time, saying that in certain number of sessions the treatment has to give results. According to the research made, the success of a particular treatment depends on the individual. The individual with depression is the one who has the decision how long or how many sessions the treatment will take. When an individual is really depressed, the treatment has to be design with details knowing that the depressed individual will accept the treatment. In some cases, depression can take different levels altitudes. That is why is important to use the right intervention for a specific individual. For example, for someone with family difficulties, I might find a parenting class or support group. For a homeless person, I might find a place to live and a career training program. For a student, I might find a mentor or a learning disability expert. Maria is not my client; she is a person who has been a mentor and a friend in my life. Since she started to get depressed I have been trying to find resources to help her. I have seen how her life has been affective by the relationship she ended. Maria has really influenced my life in a positive way. Maria is a very reserved person, she does not share what she feels or thinks. When she is going through difficult times she pretends everything is going well. I think is the way she was raised, she comes from a little town in Mexico. Since a child she was influenced by her strict father. As her friend and being a social worker I felt the responsibility to help her. It is not only depression what is the concern, but the suicidal thoughts she is syarting to have. I got involved in this situation when she told me that she was starting to have those thoughts. Maria is a very religious person; she has mentioned that God is the only one who is going to help her getting over this depression. She does not trust on people, that is why she is having trouble fading professional
