Different time periods share different ideals and values. Depending on the era, those cultural beliefs and standards are reflected through the way in which individuals act and behave. People within these times convey their beliefs to others through the use of writing. Literature is vastly influenced by culture and ideals of the time period it is written. The Anglo-Saxon period used the epic story Beowulf to reflect ideals within their time. Anglo-Saxons shared a heroic ideal and set of traditional heroes. Heroes were believed to be courageous and have personal valor. In the story Beowulf, Beowulf himself was the character representing this idea. Like Beowulf, “Seafarer” uses Christianity as a basis of the story. The narrator shows his belief in God by praising him: “He set it swinging firmly in space/ Gave life to the world and light to sky/ Death leaps at the fools who forget their God” (lines 103-106). He believes that God is most powerful and humans should act with the intention of pleasing God in order to reach Heaven. Throughout the story, he emphasizes the idea that those God is the creator of all things and he should be honored for the love he gives. This reflects the Anglo-Saxons because it establishes the idea that Christianity is an important aspect in their society. Anglo-Saxons also lived with the idea of fate guiding them through their lives. They thought humans had no control over events in their lives because they were predetermined. The narrator of “Seafarer” thinks that his thoughts and actions are because of his fate: “Fate is stronger/ And God mightier than any man’s mind/ Our thoughts turn to where our home is” (lines 115-117). With this thought, the narrator believes everything he does will lead him “home” which he considers to be Heaven. His idea of fate ties into the idea of God as his creator because he puts his trust in fate to lead him to Heaven the way God planned.
