When I saw my owner reading the first time I thought it was interesting, the second I saw him reading was when I was cleaning the dishes, and I saw him in the living room reading the same book form last time and I said “Sir do mind if I learn how to read” I was expecting a whipping after I asked this question but instead he said “yes” I was so happy but he told me that I couldn’t tell anybody because it is illegal to teach a blacks how to read. Another fact is that it took me about 11 months to learn how to read, it was very challenging cause I’ve never even been exposed to this type of material so it was very hard. It was also hard to not share it with other cause all I wanted to do is brag cause I never got the chance to bragged bout somethin’. Pink was just a slave that was trying to get on good terms with his owner, so the owner could one day treat him better or even let him free. I really didn’t understand why he taught me how to read, it was against the law. Sometimes I would think to myself that he was either setting me up for a trap or getting ready to release me so when I was released I could read important signs and information. I was the only slave that he taught how to read. Some folks ask me if he was a good man or a bad man but I always say he was a bad man more than a good man because although he taught me how to read I was still his slave, now I guess he ought to be a nice guy. Literature is written in many ways and styles. During his time, Frederick Douglass’s works and speeches attracted many people’s attention. With the amount of works and speeches Douglass has given, it has influenced many others writers to express themselves more freely. Though Douglass lived a rigorous childhood, he still made it the best that he could, with the guidance and teaching of one of his slave owner’s wife he was able to read and write, thus allowing him to share his life stories and experiences. Douglass’s work today still remain of great impact and influence, allowing us to understand the reality of slavery, and thus inspiring many others to come out and share for others to understand.
One day, Douglass eavesdrops on him and Mrs. Auld’s conversation. Mr. Auld persuades her that reading “could do him (Douglass) no good, but a great deal of harm.” (page 39) This antithesis along with the rest of his statement makes Douglass come to the realization that literacy is equated with not only individual consciousness but also freedom. Frederick Douglass’s tone in his introductory paragraph of Learning to Read and Write is learned and reflective. Douglass begins his introduction with a brief background of how he “succeeded in learning to read and write” despite the difficulties presented by his masters. He does not use words or phrases that suggest remorse even the slightest bit of bitterness, instead he uses analytic descriptions of how his mistress “kindly” began to instruct him, but because of the disapproval from her husband, stopped and allowed no one else to teach him. Douglass then explains that his mistress, although was a strict slave-owner, “first lacked the depravity indispensable to shutting me [him] out in mental darkness.” Through reflection and analysis, Douglass concluded that his mistress treated him badly not out of heart but because she had become corrupted in attempts to receive the approval from society. This itself I find ironic because instead of having developed resentment towards his mistress, Douglass respectfully describes her as a woman who was simply following the norm. Once Douglass learns to read, and gets his first book, “The Columbian Orator” he is immediately exposed to arguments against the suffering he is experiencing. Among the speeches in “The Columbian Orator” there is a dialogue between a slave and his master in which the slave convinces the master to grant him freedom. Douglass is like Adam and Eve after then ate the apple. He is enlightened, and he can never go back. Not only is he isolated from his brothers because of his intelligence, but he is also guilty of a serious crime. It is no wonder that Douglass views his knowledge as a curse, it has so far caused him nothing but pain, and isolation. Ignorance is bliss.
In Fredrick Douglass’ narrative of his own life he makes known his difficulty in receiving an education, something we take for granted today. He goes on to restate a conversation between his master and mistress: “Learning would spoil the best negro in the world. Now, if you teach that negro…how to read, there would be no keeping him. It would forever unfit him to be a slave. He would become unmanageable, and of no value to his master. As to himself, it could do him no good, but a great deal of harm.” (Douglass 41) One educated slave poses an immense threat upon the act of enslavement and those who enslave. Knowledge is dangerous in any form; it was feared to cause a slave to question authority and the entire slave institution. Intelligence enlightens slaves of the evils of slavery and that has a spiraling effect as such information would not be kept to one's self. Knowledge edifies enslaved men and women of their quality of life and to distinguish themselves as human beings rather than property. Slave owners would deprive their slaves of basic education in hopes of a decreased chance of rebellion and in contrast, a slave would need education to be liberated. Acquiring knowledge was far more powerful than any weapon. We see this idea throughout Douglass' narrative as Douglass was able to liberate himself through education.

He believed that the ability to read makes a slave “unmanageable” and “discontented” (2054). The narrative essay of the “Life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave” describes personal accounts Paul experienced as a slave. Cruel and unjust treatment done to him by his masters gave him to a strong desire to learn how to read and write in any possible way by being resourceful and be determined to learn. However, Douglas expressed “I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather a blessing” and “I envied my fellow slaves for their stupidity” (4); wherein he regrets learning and he also illustrated why he considered knowledge as a curse because he learned about freedom did not benefit him at all. During the days of slavery many slaves did not know the alphabet, let alone reading and writing. Douglass feels distant from his close ones and is often stressed about his situation. Sometimes, he would be so tensed that he feels that there is no other option than to take his own life in order to be free and escape the misery of slavery. Frederick Douglass was stressed and he would find himself “regretting [his] own existence, and now wishing [himself] dead;” he had no doubt that “[he] should have killed [himself]” (146). Plantation owners in the south hunted for, captured, and enslaved African Americans to do a wide variety of work at the plantations. Even though these slaves would get regularly whipped for arbitrary reasons, the owners and masters believed that it was in the best interest of the slaves to be in slavery. A slave masters wife started teaching a slave by the name of Fredrick Douglass how to read because she believed he would not have gotten the chance to learn if he was not in slavery. Slave masters also knew the slaves had a better live because they had food to eat. They claimed that if the slaves had not been captured or born of a slave family, they would not have had the adequate amount of food to survive. Douglass refutes that humanitarian views towards slavery are wrong by giving his insight on how he was dehumanized by slavery in the following ways: his ability to learn basic life skills, how to care and have a voice for himself and lastly, the gift of happiness.
