- May 30, 1593) were close to the real author of Shakespeare. The best we have got in 90 years is Edward De Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. In 19320, J.T. Looney’s book “Shakespeare Identified” Oxford was highly educated, trained as a lawyer and was known to have traveled to many of the exact places featured in Shakespeare’s plays. Oxfordians-as those who believe in De Vere’s authorship of the Bard’s work are known-argue that he concealed his identity because his works were so politically provocative, and he wished to be avoid being outed as a lowly playwright. But hard evidence surface linking his plays to someone else, the man with the strongest claim to the plays of William Shakespeare appears to be… William Shakespeare. For one thing, Oxford died in 1604, and some of Shakespeare’s greatest plays (including “King Lear”, “The Tempest”, and “Macbeth”) were published after that date. Shakespeare’s supports-known as Stratfordians- emphasize the fact that the body of evidence that does exist points to Shakespeare, and nobody else, as the author of his works. (Pruitt, Sarah. “Did Shakespeare Really Write His Own Plays?” History.com, A&E Television Network, 15 July 2015, www.history.com/news/ask-history/did-shakespeare-really-write-his-own-plays. Accessed 27 Apr. 2017) Also many people believed that Edward De Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford wrote Shakespeare’s plays. And among those who believed that didn’t write his own plays, De Vere can be said leading contender to unseat the Bard, but he’s far from the only one-there have been dozens of candidates proposed and thousand of books and articles written on the so-called Shakespeare authorship question. As in the plays themselves, there are many warring factions and charges of dark conspiracies to suppress the truth, so it’s with some trepidation that we enter these waters at all. Other than the plays themselves; we have a few signatures, a recording of a marriage to Anne Hathaway, a strange three page will, some papers detailing business transactions totally unrelated to writing, and just two portraits. No recording of schooling. Not one single manuscript in his own hand of even a fragment of his amazing body of work. They have found very little, and, to make matters of confusing, most of what they found was fraudulent. After two centuries after his death, no one even suggested that the Shakespeare of Stratford was not the author of his own plays. In fact, the first person to make an argument did it as a joke, as Shakespeare scholar James Shapiro points out in his book “Contested Will: Who Wrote Shakespeare?” In 1848, a young Lutheran scholar from Pennsylvania named Samuel Mosheim Schmucker, dismayed about the academic trending of using historical and biographical evidence to doubt the existence of Christ, argued that the same approaches could be used to argue that Shakespeare never existed. Shapiro say that Schmucker’s forgotten book, “Historic Doubts Respecting Shakespeare Illustrated Infidel Objections Against The Bible”, foreshadows all the majors themes of the Shakespearean doubters: the lack of evidence, a distrust of disputed texts, the improbable success of an unlikely individual, and the notion that the “ official” story can only be perpetuated by general ignorance and conspiracy by the establishment. Shakespeare’s last will and testimony of 1616 specified bequest to John Heminges, Henry Condell, and Richard Burbage. All three were his erstwhile fellow actors and shareholders in the Lord Chamberlain's/King’s Men acting company and in the Globe and Blackfriars theaters. At an unknown date within seven years of his death in 1616, a funerary monument was installed in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-Upon-Avon. The effigy has both quill and paper. In 1623, seven years after Shakespeare’s death, 36 plays were published in the collection known today as the First Folio. The prefatory matters identified the actor, William Shakespeare of Stratford, as a playwright, and it refers to the Stratford monument and to the “Sweet Swan of Avon.” All this evidence is unreliable. The works of Shakespeare are some of the most respected in English literature. They have set the standard for all the great writers who followed. Although these works have been attributed to William Shakespeare of Stratford, they could have been written by anyone. The definite authorship of a work is always uncertain, but these works are particularly contested. There are those who believe someone besides Shakespeare of Stratford wrote the works, while others believe his identity, as a whole, is a conspiracy. Clearly the author of a work is important, but some wonder if knowing the author’s identity is really worth all the fuss. The works of Shakespeare will still reign at the top of English literature no matter who wrote them. Therefore, the question of authorship may not even be relevant.

In 1564, a man was born by the name of William Shakespeare. He was born to a poor family, was given little education, and had no interaction with sophisticated society. Thirty-eight plays and over 150 sonnets are not attributed to this ignorant man. Those who believe that Shakespeare was the author have no definitive proof but instead point to Hamlet’s declaration: "The play’s the thing(Satchell 71)." The true author, however, lies hidden behind he name of Shakespeare. Edward de Vere the premier Earl of Oxford is not only considered a great poet in history, but he may also be the great playwright who concocted the sonnets and plays which are now attributed to William Shakespeare of Stratford, England.

Ever since the author's background has been questioned, scholars and other people have debated over who wrote the famous plays and sonnets that have the name William Shakespeare signed on them. Many alternative candidates have been presented, such as Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. However, these people do not have strong or valid arguments to support their theories. Based on biographical evidence, Shakespeare, not Edward de Vere, most likely wrote Shakespearean works. The arguments for other candidates like de Vere are not strong enough to show that Shakespeare did not write Shakespearean works.
With a few exceptions, Shakespeare did not invent the plots of his plays. Sometimes he used old stories (Hamlet, Pericles). Sometimes he worked from the stories of comparatively recent Italian writers, such as Boccaccio - using both well-known stories (Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing) and little known ones (Othello). Shakespeare has been proven, by many authors, to have borrowed from the Arts, the Histories and the Sciences. (Britannica Online, http://www.eb.com:180/cgi-bin/g?DocF=macro/5005/75/12.html)

Over the past 20 or so years, there has been a lot of questions who the true author is of the Shakespeare plays. I side with the Oxfordians, who believe that Shakespeare is not the true author of the plays and other literary works that he receives credit for. The opposite side of the argument is the Stratfordians, who believe that Shakespeare was the one man who wrote over 30 plays and over 150 sonnets. The Stratfordian side of the argument says that Shakespeare is the true author of all the works attributed to him.
