Honor means to hold with respect, or to consider with great deference. Personally, honor means that one has done something worthy of remembrance; they deserve to be held with the highest esteem. Honor is not an easy thing to achieve. On July 10th, 1856, in the small town of Smiljan, Croatia, a boy named Nikola Tesla was born. His father was a priest and his mom enjoyed messing with machinery, a trait her son would have in his later years. As Tesla grew up, he had bouts of mental illness symptoms. When he was only seven years old, his brother died and he claimed he could see visions. He went to school at Realschule in Karlstadt, the University of Prague studying mathematics and physics, and Graz, Austria’s Polytechnic Institute. But he had …show more content…
He was desperate for money, so he would dig graves for two dollars a day. He needed someone to support his idea for an alternating current or AC rather than the more widely known direct current created by Edison. He finally found someone who would support him and with those funds, he had about thirty patents of his own. He was asked to come and speak at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. George Westinghouse was present and loved what he heard. Tesla was hired by Westinghouse, had patents for AC motor, and received his own lab. (history.com) In 1891, he invented one of his most famous products, the Tesla coil. (livescience.com) He worked diligently and in 1893 at the World Columbian Exchange in Chicago, he presented his alternate current electricity. (teslasociety.com) In 1895, he premiered the very first hydroelectric power plant in his American home, New York City. Later that year, his lab burned to the ground and he moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. He didn’t stay very long and returned back home in 1900. J.P. Morgan acquiesced to give money to Mr. Tesla so he could make a global communications tower in Wardenclyffe which is on Long Island. (history.com) He ran out of funding and Morgan refused to give more, he thought it was a waste and nothing would come of it. The location of the tower was sold and the tower was broken apart. Tesla really would never get back on his feet after that.
In 1882, Nikola came up with the idea for a brushless AC motor and made his first sketches of it rotating electromagnets. He began working for the continental Edison Company in France designing and making improvements to the electrical equipment. Then in June 1884, Tesla relocated to New York City where he was hired by Thomas Edison to work at his Edison Machine Works. He and Edison worked alongside one another making improvements to Edison’s inventions. After several months they parted ways due to a disagreement over a
He was employed as a telegraph subbing in for the ones who had gone off to fight in the Civil War. At 1866, age 19, Edison moved to louisville, Kentucky and he worked The Associated Press.edison worked the night shift which gave im time reading and experimenting which also later gave him time to develop an unrestricted style of thinking which showed himself of examination and experimentation .(2.I.A.3.)Thomas Edison traveled around the country working on the telegraph and began later work on inventing devices.(5.I.A.3.)He worked as a telegraph operator for 16 years and started doing experiments with the telegraph equipment, found way to improve it. Edison's was faster, because instead of one message being sent one time his could send 4 messages at one time, which lead to him finding financial partners to market he used to income the product even more, Lead to the age 45 he would be a millionaire.(8.I.A.3.) now the year is 1868 Thomas Edison went home because his mom was ill and his dad was out of work which was going to lead his
Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was an eccentric man that was many lifetimes ahead of his generation. He was a man that dreamed of giving the world an unlimited supply of wireless energy. His genius imagination allowed him to think outside the box and solve issues that others had thought were unsolvable. Nikola Tesla proposed his vision for a system powered by an alternating current generator to Thomas Edison and was shot down because Thomas Edison’s power structure had already been established using a direct current system. The two butt heads however Nikola Tesla was relentless. After being used and rejected by Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla picked himself and went toe to toe with the most prolific inventor. The stage for David vs Goliath was set. Through Nikola Tesla’s borderline obsession to solve the design for an alternating current motor and sacrificing his own opportunity to become a wealthy man, we now live in a very efficient world where everyone reaps the rewards of his genius, few know his name, and even fewer know what he did.
Tesla’s career as an inventor started when he was in his late twenties. He displayed his incredible understanding of electricity and physics when he created his first invention, the induction motor. The induction motor is a small, electric motor that has become a very useful machine. In fact, most household appliances run using Tesla’s induction motor (Vujovic 1). Score one for Tesla. Soon after he invented the induction motor, Tesla moved to America to try his luck at living the American dream. While in New York City, Tesla got the amazing opportunity to work for his hero, Thomas Edison. However, Tesla soon quit working for Edison due to some disagreements between the two inventors. And so with Edison and his men biting at Tesla’s heels, Nikola set out on his own to make a name for himself (Vujovic 1). Tesla soon became Edison’s greatest competitor. While tinkering in his lab with one of his inventions called the Tesla Coil, Tesla discovered that he could send and receive radio signals when his coils were tuned to the exact same frequency...
Thomas Edison was born in Ohio Milan, on February 11, 1847. His father and mother had seven children including Thomas. Thomas going to school at age eleven in public school but only lasted for 12 weeks. The problem he had was that he was a self-taught child. So his parents had to take him home a home school him. So his parents gave him chemistry and electronics books. Thomas was a smart kid growing up learning fast. But before he had plunged into great books before he was 12. Later Thomas is mother had got him chemicals to have him experiment. His first laboratory was the cellar of his family’s house. As he learned more he had
All my money has been invested into experiments with which I have made new discoveries enabling mankind to have a little easier life,” Tesla (1927). This philosophy of Tesla hold true on both accounts, Tesla did make life easier for mankind and he did invest all his money attempting to accomplish that task. “Despite his accomplishments, however, Tesla died penniless and without the accolades that would he would ultimately earn over a century later,” according to Whipps (2014). Aside from the above quote which reminds us of how determined Tesla was, we have various technologies that current culture utilizes on an everyday basis which solidifies his importance on society. For example, Tesla is responsible solely for or developing the technology or methods which enable, alternating current, light, x-rays, radios, remote controls, electric motors, robotics, lasers, wireless communications and potential limitless free energy. An argument could be made that Tesla has had such a profound influence on our society that the inevitable switch to battery operated, fully automatized motor vehicles is led by a company which utilizes the brand name of
...pany, here, my investors and I set up a laboratory at 89 Liberty Street in Manhattan so that I could work on me plans and prototypes of my inventions. Mostly, i focused my efforts on AC current generators and means to transport that power to the public. After I had worked and produced one of these generators, a friend of mine, asked me to present and show off my generator at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. A fellow inventor, George Westinghouse, who was also working on an AC motor, decided to buy my polyphase induction motor and transformer designs for $60,000 in cash as well as stock. He also decided to pay me $2.50 per AC horsepower produced by each motor to sweeten the deal. Westinghouse also decided to hire me for 2,000 dollars a month as a electrical advisor and technician and the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company's Pittsburgh labs.
After retiring he became a gentleman, which was an upstanding title in the eighteenth century. In 1751 he published his book entitled Experiments and Observations on Electricity. The findings in this book gained him quite a lot of fame. He invented the battery, and created new English words that could be used in the science of electricity, along with other discoveries.
Honor means to have high respect or esteem towards something or someone. It also means a privilege and to regard with great respect. To me honor means to hold someone in high regard for what they have done for the betterment of something other than their self.
He invented electromagnetic field concepts in physics and the electric motor, discovered laws of electrolysis and played a key role in the development in electricity for the use of technology. This
Elon musk is a recognized South African inventor and entrepreneur; he is nationalized as Canadian and American as well. He is one of the most brilliant minds of these times, but his life was not always perfect. His success did not come from one day to another; he struggled in life, but he decided that he was going to be remembered forever one day. His achievements, dedication and motivation by creating Space X and leading the success of Tesla Motors, has positioned him as one of the most powerful and rich men in the world. Elon musk was born in June 28th 1971, in Pretoria South Africa.
Tesla went on the rest of his life receiving many accomplishments. He was given the Edison medal by the Vice President Behrend of the institute of Electrical Engineers, which was the most coveted electrical prize during that time. He even received many congratulatory letters from many acclaimed scientists, including Albert Einstein. Tesla died alone, without his two million dollar fortune, on January 7th, 1943. He passed in the Hotel New Yorker, room 3327 on the 33rd floor (source). Although he died without his fortune, he was long remembered. Long after his death, Tesla was recognized for his visions, his dreams, and his ambitions. Through his discoveries, the modern electrical era was born. Lance Armstrong even spoke highly of Tesla, “The world will wait a long time for Nikola Tesla’s equal in achievement and imagination.” (source)
Westinghouse licensed Tesla’s patents for $60,000 in stocks and cash and royalties based on how much electricity was sold. Later, fearing ruin, Westinghouse begged Tesla for relief from the royalties Westinghouse agreed to. “Your decision determines the fate of the Westinghouse Company,” he said. Tesla, grateful to the man who had never tried to swindle him, tore up the royalty contract, walking away from millions in royalties that he was already owed and billions that would have accrued in the future. He would have been one of the wealthiest men in the world—a titan of the Gilded Age.
The word honor means high respect and esteem. To me, honor means courage, respect and hard work. An honorable person is someone I can look up to. Albert Einstein is that type of person.
In 1884, he moved to the United States, and was able to obtain employment from Thomas Edison. While there, Edison offered Tesla $50,000 if he could solve several serious problems the company was having. After spending a year working it all out (and developing several patentable ideas for the company along the way), Edison reneged on the deal claiming it was a joke. He offered Tesla a $10 per week raise instead. Tesla resigned immediately. This experience would color Tesla's relationships later.
