The word honor means high respect and esteem. To me, honor means courage, respect and hard work. An honorable person is someone I can look up to. Albert Einstein is that type of person. He is someone that overcame obstacles in his youth to become one of the greatest scientists to ever live. Einstein was born on March 14th, 1879 in Ulm, Kingdom of Wurttemberg, German Empire. His parents’ names were Hermann and Pauline Einstein and he had one sister, named Maja. He was a quiet kid who was slow in learning how to speak. Although scientists today are very comfortable with his ideas, in his time they were completely revolutionary. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his services to Theoretical Physics and for his discovery of the law of photoelectric effect. In 1990 he was added to the Walhalla Temple and in 2008 he was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. These are just a few of his many honors. Einstein’s personal life was challenging. His first wife, was helpful in his early discoveries and very smart in her own right. Her name was Mileva Maric’. She was a Serbian physicist and the 2nd woman to finish a full program of study at the Department of Math and Physics. They married in 1903 and had 3 children. They divorced in 1919. His 2nd wife was named Elsa Einstein. She was also his first cousin on his mother’s side and second cousin on his father’s side. They had two children together. Stemming from the first years of the 20th century, quantum mechanics has had a monumental influence on modern science. First explored by Max Planck in the 1900s, Einstein modified and applied much of the research in this field. This begs the question, “how did Einstein contribute to the development and research of quantum mechanics?” Before studying how Einstein’s research contributed to the development of quantum mechanics, it is important to examine the origins of the science itself. Einstein took much of Planck’s experimental “quantum theory” research and applied it in usable ways to existing science. He also greatly contributed to the establishment of the base for quantum mechanics research today. Along with establishing base research in the field, Einstein’s discoveries have been modified and updated to apply to our more advanced understanding of this science today. Einstein greatly contributed to the foundation of quantum mechanics through his research, and his theories and discoveries remain relevant to science even today.
Johannes Kepler is now remembered for discovering the three laws of planetary motion, and writing about them in books that were published in 1609 and 1619. He also did important work in optics, discovered two new regular polyhedra, gave the first mathematical treatment of close packing of equal spheres, gave the first proof of how logarithms worked, and devised a method of finding the volumes of solids of revolution. This can be seen as contributing to the development of calculus. Not only did he help the development of calculus, but he calculated the most exact astronomical tables known today. This accuracy did much to establish the truth of heliocentric astronomy, which states that the sun, and not the earth, was the center of the planetary system.
Of all the scientists to emerge from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries there is one whose name is known by almost all living people. While most of these do not understand this mans work, everyone knows that his impact on the world is astonishing.
Over the years there have been many more important figures in astronomy. One extraordinary astronomer was Galileo Galilei who invented the first refractor telescope in which light is bent to enlarge an image of the sky (“Galileo Project”). The next great astronomer to follow him was Isaac Newton. Newton had made a great amount of contributions to astronomy during his life. He further proved that the Earth was not the center of the universe and he also invented the Newtonian reflector telescope which is still used today in observatories. Also, he discovered that light could be split into a visible spectrum of colors. Spectral colors from stars would later be used to determine their size, temperature, chemical composition, and even the direction the star is moving.
