In December 2000, Mardi Tan created the Yumcha website, which earned her an award as the New South Wales Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Shell-Livewire entrepreneurship competition. This validated her work and encouraged her to continue her work towards the website. Her first version was Yumcha 1.0, this was a simple website and didn’t have the advanced features like blogs and on-line shopping. This type of technology required assistance of a programmer and Tan didn’t have the budget for it. She abandoned the project in 2002 and went in a different direction. • In the 2006 Australia Census report, the national population was 20 million of which 1.7 million were Asian ancestry and the Chinese community was the 2nd largest group. • Advertisers were interested in reach the Asian community to sell a variety of products, services, investments, and job opportunities. • Other smaller communities already had successful running website. Tan decision to create this website was a wise decision because she is trying to reach a market niche. Companies and advertisers will want to put adds to sell their product and services, which will cost less compared to developed website and it will reach a new group of customers. Once the decision was made to continue the project, she had to find a developer for the website. The first developer was based in Sydney, he was very expensive and wanted to take ownership of the website. So Tan decided to look in other regions to find a developer. Some of the problems that Tan could face in this decision are: • No face to face meeting to discuss issues or directions of website. • Problems in enforcing written contract due to the laws of that country. • The effect of national culture in work ethic. • Language
