The American dream is a concept that is rooted in the history of the United States. People immigrate to the US with the hope of the American dream consisting of prosperity and success as a result of their constant hard work. In a world where success is defined by material possessions and money, Jay Gatsby embodies that ideal. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the main character, Jay Gatsby, is an affluent resident of West Egg. He has everything– the house, the friends, the money. Whether he admits it to himself or not, he came from the opposite– a family that was not wealthy. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford because all my ancestors were educated there for many years. It is a family tradition.’... ‘After that I lived like a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe—Paris, Venice, Rome—collecting jewels, chiefly rubies, hunting big game, painting a little, things for myself only, and trying to forget something very sad that had happened to me long ago.’” (Fitzgerald 65-66) This is a conversation between Gatsby and Nick Carraway, where Gatsby is explaining the conditions in which he grew up. Through this quote, the reader can interpret the many lies Gatsby tells Carraway in an attempt to sell his facade. He starts by saying that he is the son of very wealthy people, which, as stated in the book, is false. In reality, Gatsby grew up very poor. He goes on to say that his whole family is dead, yet we know his dad is still alive since he was present for Gatsby’s funeral later in the book. This lie is Gatsby trying to conceal his past because he is embarrassed.
