“But I want to say one thing to the American people. I want you to listen to me. I'm going to say this again: I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie. Not a single time. Never. These allegations are false. And I need to go back to work for the American people.” This is one of the most famous lines from our 42nd President William Jefferson Clinton. During his presidency America was a mixed bag, there was a lot of positive and negative. There were many successes and faults politically, economically, and socially. Overall Bill Clinton had a major impact on American society. Although Bill Clinton’s presidency was tarnished by his relationship with Monica Lewinsky causing national concern, he still had major …show more content…
positive impacts on American history which were evidenced through his reformation of the American economy through various bills that were passed,as well as his involvement in international affairs which bolstered the view of America in areas such as the former Soviet Union, and Kosovo.
William Jefferson Blyth was born on August 19, 1946, in Hope Arkansas. Life was not easy for President Clinton from the start. Months before his birth, his biological father had died in a car accident. When he was four he had to live with his grandparent due to his mother wanting to become a nurse. At the age of eight Bill’s mother finally married to Roger Clinton, this is where Bill inherited the last name, Clinton. Unfortunately, Roger Clinton was an alcoholic and abused Bill, his mother, and his half-brother. When deciding on what he wanted to do in life Mr. Clinton had various ideas, but when meeting with President John F. Kennedy in 1963 he decided he wanted to go into politics. In 1964 he went to Georgetown University where here graduated 4 years later. After that, he went to Yale University where he met his future
wife Hillary Rodham. Also during this time, he got his first taste of political experience working for presidential candidate George McGovern as his campaign coordinator. In 1974 Clinton suffered defeat from John Paul Hammerschmidt for a spot in Congress. He later redeemed himself by becoming the youngest ever governor of Arkansas in 1978. He would keep this position until 1992 when he began his journey into the White House. Again facing many challenges along the way. During the early parts of his campaign, the state of Arkansas was seen as “unsophisticated and economically underdeveloped” make it hard for Clinton from the start. Many thought that he had too little experience when it came to foreign affairs. Also, his campaign was scarred by alleged affairs with other women besides his wife. But through all that he started to gain supporters through his fresh take on the government, eventually ending up as the Democratic nominee. In November of 1992, Clinton beat George Bush and Ross Perot to become the 42nd President of the United States. Monica Lewinsky is an American fashion designer but she used to be a White House intern during Clinton Presidency. While in the office she was office she had an affair with President Clinton. This sparked a bloom of controversy both in an out of the White House. Especially due to Mr.Clinton denial of it, even though there was an abundance of evidence such as in a letter Monica saying “I need you right now not as president, but as a man. PLEASE be my friend” to the President. In terms of journalism, this story was massive. One of the most promising news source in this era of the internet was The Drudge Report. The Drudge Report was a gossip and political rumors site made by Matt Drudge. Matt Drudge can be the grandfather of modern journalism. On his site, Drudge was one of the first people to expose the sex scandal to the mainstream public. Making it the first time a major sex story was covered which was taboo at the time. "We now have a 24-hour-a-day news cycle. News gets used up very quickly and there's a constant hunger for new tidbits.” This was said by James Fallows who was editor of U.S. News and World Report. This quote shows how people were so invested in this story, and how it finally put this new form of journalism over the edge. In terms of the public, the country had their own two cents. In an article written in The Southeast Missourian on January 27, 1998, said when talking about the scandal “The critical test will be on Capitol Hill where Democrats and Republican alike are using grave terms to discuss the mounting scandal.” This quote explains how grim the situation was due to both parties not being able to find any positives from the situation. President Clinton was also in a lot of scrunting for lying. Mr.Clinton had sworn under oath to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, but instead he “provided perjurious, false and misleading testimony in response to questions deemed relevant by a Federal judge concerning the nature and details of his relationship with a subordinate Government employee” This drastically dropped Clinton’s credibility, it was unforgivable for the leader of the nation to go against the oath just to save his himself. Inside the White House, the situation was also coming to a climax with Congress was deciding whether or not to impeach the President. The House of Representatives voted for the impeachment but Senate on the other hand voted to acquit him. Even though the case was over with not everyone was happy with it. Senate Minority Leader Thomas A. Daschle said "As deeply disappointed as I am with the process, it pales in comparison to the disappointment I feel toward this president,"Maybe it is because I had such high expectations. Maybe it is because he holds so many dreams and aspirations that I hold about our country. Maybe it is because he is my friend. I have never been, nor ever expect to be, so bitterly disappointed again." This quote shows that the Lewinsky Scandal had a bitter impact left on the government due to it being the 2nd time ever that a President was impeachment, cementing Clinton has a failure for giving in to his lustfulness. The scandal also had a lasting impact on the American people. An article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said “ Sadly, Bill Clinton has shown himself incapable of such sacrifice. He is a complex man with many attractive qualities, but in the end his character has been defined by his crass selfishness. It is that trait -- perjury and adultery are merely its symptoms -- that has rendered him unfit to continue as President”. Another article from the Philadelphia Inquirer said “ Bill Clinton should resign. He should resign because his repeated, reckless deceits have dishonored his presidency beyond repair. He should resign because the impeachment anguish that his lies have invited will paralyze his Administration at a time when an anxious world looks to the White House for sure-footed leadership”. These quotes shows that America had a common consensus had Clinton was now unfit to serve as President, which left the White House in darkness which other Presidents had to fix. One aspect of Clinton legacy that is looked fondly at is his foreign affairs. But it did not start this way. Previous President George Bush had sent troops to Somalia in order to create peace in the African country. At the time Somali leader Mohamed Siad Barre had been overthrown and was now being the battleground of the two main warlords Cali Mahdi Maxamed and Mohammed Farah Aidid. It was now Clinton job to complete this fulfill the task left to him. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful causing many troops to die. This eventually lead to the resignation of Secretary of Defense Les Aspin. Also, it prorated Clinton as an unskilled leader impacting how Americans thought of him. To redeem himself Clinton would have to do something massive. Lucky for him he did have other successes. Kosovo was fighting Serbia to get their independence, due to the ethnic cleansing that was going on and the violence against Bosnian Muslims and Croatian civilians. This genocide which killed over 100 thousand people was enough reason for Kosovo to decide to leave. President Clinton fully supported this decision working with other Nato members to become peacekeepers. In an interview with reporter President Clinton said: “I think the most important thing now is for us to save lives, return people to their homes, get them the humanitarian aid they need, and to remove completely and irrevocably the threat of aggression by the Serb military and other forces in Kosovo.” This quote shows how President Clinton cares about Kosovo and that he will not stands for the human right violations occurring. Similar to President Wilson he wants to spread freedom and democracy. Kosovo appreciated it so much that they created the Bill Clinton Boulevard. Another place where president Clinton made an impact is in the former Soviet Union. At the time the Soviet Union had just fallen apart leaving many underdeveloped countries in chaos. President Clinton was one of the leading people to get these developing nation into the United Nation. In a memorandum, he said “ In The United States has a vital stake in the success of reform in the New Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union. Ensuring effective support for the transformation underway in the NIS remains among the highest foreign policy priorities of my Administration”. This quote shows how serious President Clinton took the situation. He wanted to leave a positive impact after Cold War. This, in turn, creates allies in countries such as Poland and other former Soviet countries even though Russian relations were still not great. Bill Clinton, among other things, was an effective president when it came to economics. When he came into office in 1993, he inherited a country which was recovering from a recession. The unemployment rate when he inherited the presidency was slightly higher than seven percent. By the time he left, it had dipped to less than four percent. Additionally, his policies encouraged workers to rejoin the labor force, and by doing so, reintroduced almost three million people to the labor market. Similarly to his advancements in the labor market, his benefits to the GDP of the country are notable. In his eight years in office, he averaged 3.8 percent growth in real GDP (real meaning that it's adjusted for inflation changes from year to year). Among all post-WW2 presidents, he ranks fourth in GDP growth behind only Truman, JFK, and LBJ. In comparison, his successor, George W. Bush, averaged only 1.65 percent growth. He was able to do this by creating market opportunities for technology firms and other technology-based agreement. Clinton also tackled the problem of poverty. He was able to do this through the strong economy he had already built. During his presidency, he reduces the poverty number by seven million. Homeownership was also an all-time high. Goldman Sachs once said in 1998 “One of the reasons Goldman Sachs cites for the "best economy ever" is that "on the policy side, trade, fiscal, and monetary policies have been excellent, working in ways that have facilitated growth without inflation. The Clinton Administration has worked to liberalize trade and has used any revenue windfalls to reduce the federal budget deficit." This quote explains that Clinton was doing everything to reduce the federal budget and increase trade. This includes cutting global spending and making 300 American trade agreements. This quote shows how impactful Clinton was in terms of the economy. He fully supported the message of following the American dream. In conclusion, Bill Clinton was a historic President. He made a huge impact economically with his policies making strides to make America an economic powerhouse. Socially he made change American society through his scandal with Monica Lewinsky with also sparked the age of modern journalism. Politically he made allies and enemies with other nations, making a backbone for President to come. So, the next time you think of people who made of an impact remember the name, Bill Clinton.

Two years later in 1886 he came back to New York and found his next wife, Edith Kermit Carow, whom he raised six kids with including the one from his previous...
On January 20th, 1993 Bill Clinton is sworn in as the 42nd President of the United States and to many in the future this would be one of the best occasions in U.S. history, for the reason that Bill Clinton drastically improved the American economy since he assumed office. Under Clinton’s presidential administration, the United States enjoyed the lowest unemployment and inflation rates in recent history as well as soaring high home ownership and very low crime rates (Clinton Presidency). Clinton, a very wealthy man, from a very wealthy family is the definition of someone courageous that stood up for his beliefs and in addition, was also a patriot who decided to help the American people improve their economic situation and eventually “Climb up the economic ladder”, to then
John Calvin Coolidge, soon to be the 30th president of the United States, was born on Independence Day, 1872 in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. His father, who was also named John Calvin Coolidge Sr. was a hard working farmer, storekeeper, and businessman. Coolidge Sr. cared for his son after his wife died of tuberculosis when Calvin was just twelve. Abigail Grace Coolidge, Calvin's younger sister died when she was just fifteen, a few years after their mother had died. After Coolidge graduated Black River Academy, he went on to study law at Amherst College, Massachusetts, then passing his bar exam in 1897, which is an exam students must take before they can become attorneys. A year later after his bar exam, he opened his own law office in Northampton where he handled real estate deals (land and buildings) and bankruptcies. He gained reputation for being a hard working man and solving problems his own way --by staying out of court. Shortly after, he married Grace Anna Goodhue, a teacher at Clarke School for the Deaf. They had two sons, one of which was Calvin Jr., who passed on from an unt...
Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have many similarities. Both of their first terms as President were shockingly alike such as, job approval rating difference being only point five percent and the interest in reforming available healthcare to people of lower class. Both President Clinton and President Obama were referred to as black presidents, only because they didn’t uphold the same backgrounds as did the former presidents. Neither Obama nor Clinton had a personal relationship with his father, which meant both grew up in a single parent working household – a reality rare in the time period. Both young Obama and young Clinton grew up aspiring to be great lawyers; they married lawyers Michelle and Hillary, respectively. Clinton, as well as Obama, belong to the Democratic Party. However, despite the many similarities between the two, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama could not be any more different. Former President Bill Clinton proves superior to the current President Barack Obama because of the beneficial strategies he used to improve the United States of America.
On August 17, 1998, exactly one year after making the statement above, President Bill Clinton prepared to deliver a speech concerning a scandal that had gripped the nation for months. It is needless to say that this was an important moment during the Clinton administration. After accusations of sexual harassment, Clinton addressed the nation and admitted to having a relationship with Monica Lewinsky. In this critical speech Clinton set out to admit to wrong-doings, provide a few reasons for his action, and ultimately persuade the audience into moving on and forgetting the scandal. This essay will break down his speech into sections and examine the most and least effective strategies that Clinton employed and how well he executed those strategies. This is an interesting speech given under rare circumstances. Not since Watergate had an American president been under such harsh moral criticism from the public. By looking critically at this speech we are able to gain valuable insight into Clinton's motives.
The Enlightenment had the most far-reaching impact on American culture. The Enlightenment stemmed from the Scientific Revolution. The Scientific Revolution caused people to start thinking on their own and stop believing in, or at least question, the Bible. Although the Enlightenment started in England, it quickly spread through the colonies. The Enlightenment was key in helping set in motion the thought process that would eventually lead to the colonists to revolt against British rule. Enlightenment is the backbone of today’s democratic government. The Great Awakening had a bearing in that it gave people humanitarian beliefs to build on, but in the war for freedom that ensued, it was Enlightenment that fueled their fire.
Before stepping into the critical analysis of the speech, it is important to understand the historical setting from which the speech arose. The context can be briefly summarized as the following. In 1995 Clinton had a sexual relationship with one of his White House interns by the name of Monica Lewinsky. On January 17, 1998, a sexual misconduct lawsuit against him was filed. Clinton then quickly delivered a forceful public statement that he did not have a sexual relationship with the woman. However, unknown to President Clinton, Linda Tripp, one of Lewinsky’s associates, had recorded several conversations of Lewinsky describing her affair with the President. In the seven months afterwards, Kenneth W. Starr, the StarWhitewater independent counsel, had began collecting evidence of the affair and carrying out investigation about Clinton’s obstruction of justice. Evidence of Clinton lying under oath would be grounds for impeachment. On August 17, 1998, Clinton decided to a...
Bill Clinton known as William Jefferson Blythe III was born on August 19, 1946 in Hope, Arkansas. His mother's name was Virginia Cassidy and his father was William Jefferson Blythe. Bill Clinton never got to meet his biological father due to the fact that he died in an accident three months before he was born. Bill Clinton was taught to read at a very early age by his grandma, Edith Cassidy who practically raised him. In 1950 Bill Clinton’s mom married Roger Clinton who was a car dealer and an abusive alcoholic, when Bill Clinton was fifteen; his mother divorce Roger Clinton then remarried him again. Has a young boy he was very religious to the point where he went to church on a regular basis and when he became an adult he was a member of a Baptist church. He became infatuated with politics when he was a teenager; he won student elections in high school as well as at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where he graduated from and later on won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. When he graduated from Yale Law School Bill Clinton taught law at the University of Arkansas for a short amount of time.
Some people believe her values are “a result of having lived through the depression” (Harris 673). She has seen the worst and hopes to make things better for her people. As a child, Clinton was “earning merit badges in girl scouts and starring in the girls softball league” (Harris 674). She has always believed women were smart and strong. Earning badges and playing sports might not seem like much, but it taught a young Clinton that women can do anything they set their mind to. Clinton went off to college and met her husband Bill Clinton there. As the couple got older, Bill decided he wanted to run for president. Hillary “went to Indiana to coordinate the campaign” (Harris 678) for Bill. From the start to the end of Bill’s presidency, Hillary was “extremely active in government affairs” (Hurley 204). She “[emphasized] the need for a global feminist agenda” (Hurley 204-205). Even though Bill was the president, Hillary applied herself as if she were the president. She encouraged equality for genders. Her speech “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights” was given right in the middle of Bill’s presidency. She used her economic power to create awareness of the gender inequality in the
On November 1995, Bill Clinton made a huge mistake that would cost him his position as the president of the United States. Having sexual relations with then intern, Monica Lewinsky has affected many people all over the world in different ways. Since 2005,Clinton has been rated as one of the top presidents according to an ABC News poll. Although he is considered a prime president since scandal has affected his family, supporters, the national government and relations with other countries. I believe the speech; “I Have Sinned” was intended mainly for the U.S citizens, his family and friends, the national government, allied countries, his religion and anyone else affected by this scandal.
The renewal of America starts with William Clinton stating his objectives on how America together will comeback from the Cold War and boost their economy to once what it was before. He states how January 20th, 1993 is such an important day in the history of the United States because it will go into the books as known as the Renewal of America. William says that, "To renew America we must be bold. We must do what no generation has had to do before. We must invest in our own people, in their jobs, and in their future, and at the same time cut our massive debt... and we must do so in a world in which we must compete for every opportunity. It will not be easy. It will require sacrifice, but it can be done, and done fairly." This part of his speech to me is the vocal point in his speech. He describes how America must come together and as a whole build something that can be looked at in the future as something that had a significant role in
President Bill Clinton is very questionable. When people think of him that automatically think about his scandal with Monica Lewinsky. But his presidency was not only revolved around his scandal, he made very drastic decisions when it came to foreign policy. When he first came into office, he had little experience with foreign policy. Also he had little interest but due certain circumstances he had to get involved the foreign problems. He was involved in the Balkan Crisis and other foreign countries.
Lately, the top story in the news day after day, months after months have been about William Jefferson Clinton, also known as Bill. Who could blame them, there is nothing better than a story out of the ordinary, especially one with presidential status. For the past months he has been the most talked about figure, being the essential topic for news, talk shows, late night comedy and even going as far as the big screen. Talk about 'Primary Colors' and 'Wag the Dog.' What has gotten to me the most however, were the constant flow of Republicans, along with a few Democrats, who just want to say how shocked and embarrassed they are along with the people of the United States. The president had not just become the most talked about figure, but also one history had ever seen, so far that is, breaking the record and becoming a topic of conversation and debate 'twenty-four seven.' The people, who I think were most affected by this crisis and feel very sad for, are the Republicans, since they had lost severe amount of sleep over the president's bedroom crisis. They had to perform their republican duties by shocking our brains with the president's affair with Monica Lewinsky. We had to ignore the rest of the world news and its issues while they plough through the valley of lies, abuse of power and something they called high crimes and misdemeanors.
Said but not meant, because in fact the Clinton Dynasty is riddled with disgusting offenses legal or moral. They are liars, criminals, and blatantly unpatriotic.
Starting off her political career at Yale University Clinton was able to study in the field of Law, there at Yale she met her now husband Bill Clinton and changed her political stance of a Republican to a Democrat. Changing her political stance she was turned to becoming an activist for many organizations, such as, women’s rights, health care and even children’s rights, her confidence in herself showed through her activism in the community traveling to many places to advocate better peace in the world. Hillary moved to Arkansas in the late 70’s with her husband Bill who she married in 1975, her role in Arkansas ranges from being a an Advocate for Children and Families to a Legal Services firm. As Bill became president scandals of
