What did Aristide the just and Cimon contribute to the Delian league, and what role did they play? Before the Delian league, it used to be called the Hellenic League led by Spartans who were fighting in the Persian wars, but then changed in 468 to 478 BC due to Spartan king Pausanius arrogance and ambition that angered the Spartans and insulted the other Greeks when he was set out to free Greek states under Persian control. Mentioned by plutarch “officiousness and absurd pretensions” was the cause of aggravating the Spartans and Greeks and his frequent contacts with the Persian king which led the Leonians to ask Athens to take over, which birthed the Delian League. Under his control, the leagues directed at the persians were big, In 476 to 475 Cimon found Eion on the Strymon River, it was of great economic and strategic significance because it dominated the main east-west land route and it was a natural center for resource gatherings, it was then Cimon removed all the persians living there and because the land was fertile and easy to be habitable, handed the land to Athenians who made colony there. This greatly contributed to the Delian league in making Athenians prosperous and giving them more land to habitat. There was then the Battle of Eurymedon in 486 BC where the Persian king Xerxes assembled a military and naval force at the mouth of the Eurymedon river in Pamphylia waiting for 80 Phoenicians ships to arrive from Cyprus. It was a bad endeavor as Cimon planned the attack before the contingent could reach him and to make the sea prepared to pull out the enemy to battle. It was mentioned by plutarch that after a heavy battle, they won, beat back the barbarians and slaughtered them well and captured the army with the camp that was full of all kinds of spoils, in this way Cimon got 2 victories in one day. That victory was very significant as it left Xerxes no choice but to sign and accept the terms of a peace where he has to abide by it and stay a day's sail from the coast of Asia minor.
