According to researchers, over 3.2 million youths are victims to bullying each year. Bullying has been an issue in schools as far back as we can remember. Many children and youths experience this abuse on a daily basis from peers, siblings and or parents. Bullying is defined as a person who utilizes their strengths to intimidate someone who is vulnerable or simply afraid to stand up for themselves. The abuse comes in many forms such as verbal, physical and emotional. Can a youth survive bullying without emotional damage? Studies have shown bullying has led school-aged kids to depression, anxiety and even suicide.

The earlier bullying is detected and addressed, the earlier the issue can be stopped. It is reported, every seven minutes, a child becomes a victim to bullying. Gupta (2017) states “While bullying isn’t new, it remains a growing concern as research continues to link it to depression, anxiety, and an increased risk of suicide”. Roman Kellough, 15 Indiana native was bullied by his fellow peers at Central High School. Due to the intensity of the attacks, Kellough withdrew from Central High. He later returned to his former school with several weapons in his possession. Unfortunately died from a self afflicted womb while standing in front of his former school where he was tormented. The question remains, will there ever be an end to bullying?
It is unfortunate that so many bullying incidents go undetected. Visionsteen (2013) states “Children who are bullied won’t typically tell anyone this is happening, typically feeling helpless in their endeavors to get help.” It is imperative for parents to be aware of signs in child’s behavior that would signify an issue.
