The function of the Chinese Restaurant in Midnight at the Dragon Café acts as a bubble of protection for the Chens. Su-Jen, however, lives both inside and outside of this bubble, inside both worlds of China and Canada; this is shown very early on in the novel when Su-Jen adopts a “Canadian name” (Bates 21), in order to assimilate into the Canadian culture. Unlike Annie, her parents and Lee-Kung keep their Chinese names, and by extension they keep themselves separate from Canadian culture. The restaurant provides a sanctuary for Annie’s parents and Lee-Kung, since the restaurant seems to be the only place they truly belong in Irvine. In Toronto with the established Chinese (China Town) community, the older Chinese-minded Chens feel more at ease because they are surrounded by people who speak the same language, are going through the same struggles, whom they can talk to and understand, nothing l...

Technology has created a major impact on the way in which all organizations market their products and services. With the development of the internet, companies are now able to economically market themselves on a global level. Even smaller companies that were once not able to capture international business due to the cost factor can now do just that. The Washington Plaza Hotel is no exception. The hotel industry in DC relies heavily on tourism as a major part of its client base. Many of these tourists who visit the city are of foreign nationality. It is important that the Washington Plaza Hotel targets these people when marketing the company. Not only do they target the tourist but they also target the international business travelers that come to the city on business related trips. The hotel's website, which gives detailed information about the hotel's accommodations and services, can be accessed by potential customers all over the world. In addition, the Washington Plaza Hotel has teamed up with such web-based travel services like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, Etc. in order to capture more of the global market. Before the existence of the internet, the global market was not easily reachable. Technology has the greatest affect on marketing for many organizations and certainly for the Washington Plaza Hotel as well as the hospitality industry itself.

Founded in 1919, Hilton Worldwide has remained a beacon of innovation, quality, and success. What Hilton Worldwide calls their mission statement imposes its worldwide high status: “We will be the preeminent global hospitality company - the first choice of guests, team members and owners alike.” Fierce competition, however, does currently exist among hotel corporations within the market. Marriott International, Hilton’s main competitor, currently stands as the third-ranked world leader within the industry (according to hospitalitynet.org), coming in after Hilton. Other competition faced by Hilton comes from Wyndham Worldwide, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, and Best Western, to name a few. Affiliated with ten different hotel brands, Hilton Worldwide provides its guests with the advantage of choosing from any one of their 4,000 operating hotels located throughout 90 different countries. This has evidently contributed to Hilton Worldwide becoming one of the top leaders (ranked second to be exact) in the hospitality industry, despite their competition. The vision of Hilton Worldwide is “to fill the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality.” As the modern luxury hotel, Hilton has created a prestigious heritage with a modern attitude. The values of Hilton Hotels are stated uniquely, giving one value to each letter that constitutes the word for the hotel brand. “H” stands for Hospitality– “We are passionate about delivering exceptional guest experiences”; “I” stands for Integrity– “We do the right thing, all the time”; “L” stands for Leadership– “We are leaders in our industry and in our communities”; “T” stands for Teamwork– “We are team players in everything we do”; “O” stands for Ownership– “We are the owners of our actions and dec...

‘Ru Shang’ or ‘Confucianism Trader’, and being so is traditionally thought to be a route to success (Irwin, 2012). The concepts of ‘guanxi’ and ‘mianzi’ are very important in Chinese society and are heavily influenced in the business world. Guanxi is an important part of relationships, personal connections, contacts and networks. The idea of guanxi can be thought of as a form of significant ‘social capital’ and is not something that can be reached by just exchanging business cards or having a single meal together. Relationships are formed over time and are based on trust and to have that trust reciprocated. It is common in China for an employee to take contacts with them when switching jobs as the guanxi is with the individual, not the company.
At the beginning of 1993, the company introduced a new Group Mission. Statement that has been rolled out to every member of staff through personal presentations by the Managing Director at every hotel and corporate office. This Mission Statement has been published in English, Chinese, Thai and Indonesian, and serves as a model for that. it conveys guidelines and criteria that can be used by hoteliers who wish to monitor and evaluate their own leadership and quality. improvement efforts.
As tourism industry has been increasing dramatically during the last two decades, hotel industry is at war. In global competition, hotel chains are required to offer not only standardized facilities, but also standardized services. To meet the different needs of customers in each individual country while maintaining the same standards of services, global marketing strategy plays a critical role. Being a leader in upscale hotel chain industry, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel took a unique path to compete with its rivals.

As a result of economic development, China’s third wave migration of rich families migrating to the U.S and other western countries has increased. It seemed as if China’s most wealth were giving a vote of no confidence to China. The new rich’s departure to the west suggested that the social environment had worsened. Red capitalism refers to an individual who is not from a communist party-state official’s family, that individual must forge a special relationship with powerful officeholder in order to make his business operation viable. This chapter in Perry Link’s, “Restless China,” discusses the hotel business case and states that for a commercial value to have potential it has to be controlled by the public official. This would allow the public official to collude with the manager to abuse the public property, including the financial returns in order to maximize their own personal gain. Hotel industry is not as lucrative, however, coal mining is. China has the largest coal mining industry in the world, a significant portion of the richest people in China are owners or managers of coal mines. Law enforcement personnel’s involvement in unlawful moneymaking...
