Hospital Job Shadow Essay

My job shadow happened at the Sanford Hospital and I went on a tour with different professions throughout the hospital. Most of my time was spent with Kelly Tollfeson and she works with the business part of the hospital. I visited four different parts of the hospital while on the tour. The job shadow took place on November 30th, 2016, around Thanksgiving. First off, I visited the physical therapy department. Next, I visited the CT and MRI department of the hospital. After that, I visited the lab and the lab techs. Lastly, I visited the OR and recovery area and we spoke to a nurse in this department. The time spent in the OR with the nurse became my favorite part of the job shadow. Nursing is a profession that I am highly considering doing in my future. I enjoyed this because of the high pace aspect of the whole job. According to Megan Kurtis, a former surgical nurse, “Being a surgical nurse is very different from other specialties, because surgical nurses deal with patients who are asleep. One of the interesting topics included the lady taking me throughout the hospital explained to me that taking the stairs is a much more efficient way to get throughout the hospital. She told me this also because she said it isn’t full of germs as an elevator would contain. Another thing that I learned was that in the nursing wing a person has to have tough skin because mistakes get blamed on the nurses. According to Megan Kurtis, a former surgical nurse, “Surgeons can be friendly, but their skills may be horrible. Or they can be great Surgeons, but real jerks. Hopefully that day you will be assigned all the surgeons that are both friendly and good at what they do …but it isn’t likely.” Being able to be part of the surgical nurse profession can be exceptionally rewarding but also extremely challenging because of the different personalities a nurse can work
