Mabel Pervin, a Literary Definition of Rebirth and Renewed Existence. These days, the term rebirth has emerged as a social expression that is often used in connection to something that has merely become popular again. It has become cliché for such superficial things as a style of music, clothing, or furniture to be rebirthed. However though, the word can have a much deeper and beautiful meaning when thought of in terms of revival, renewed existence, or even a second birth. In D. H. Lawrence’s “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” we are introduced to a character, Mabel Pervin, who for all intents and purposes is dead. Lawrence used a lot of symbolism in his story to signify that Mabel’s trek into the pond was the end of her life. First, he achieves this by focusing on the day, the environment, and atmosphere in which all of this takes place. Lawrence notes through Dr. Jack Fergusson, that “The afternoon was falling. It was gray, deadened and wintry, with a slow, moist, heavy coldness sinking in and deadening all the faculties” (718). The falling afternoon signifies the end of a day. The color gray is a symbol of old age and a nearness to death. Then, there’s the weather which was described as wintry, slow, and cold. In Christianity, in order for someone to be born again, he or she must admit that they are a sinner, believe that Jesus died to save them from their sins, and then confess to the world that they are a follower of Christ. Water baptism is the way that that they confess to the world that they are a follower of Christ. In water baptism, going under the water signifies death in Christ and coming up out of the water signifies new life in Christ. We’ve already established that when Mabel Pervin went under the water, it was a symbolism of death.
