Hooking up, what does it mean? Hooking up to most would be the act of finding a random person at a party to go home with. That is what most people interpret it to be, but there is no clear definition of the term “hooking up”. The term can mean anything for almost anyone, so the easier question is what influences this behavior. Correlation suggests that the ambiguity and misinterpretation of the term ‘hooking up’ can be linked to neurotic behavior, presence of alcohol, and colleges. Firstly, to understand the term, we must understand the people whom use it. Many studies have pointed to the term being used by people who show signs of neurotic behavior. Neurotic behavior can be defined as someone who is more than likely to be moody and to experience such feelings as anxiety, fear, anger, envy, jealousy, guilt, depression, and loneliness in higher degrees. Because of this fact this can cause the affected person to isolate themselves for fear of emotional pain of ending relationships, or the possibility of a partner cheating. Neurotic people who use ‘hooking up’ usually have intent to have sexual relations with another, but by using the term show that they have no further interest in any relationship. …show more content…

Alcohol can cause a person, in high enough dosage, to lose all inhibition and morals. A majority of hook up stories start with, “So I was drunk one night” and end with, “And so I hooked up with this chick”. The ending implies that then the two went back to eithers respective home and sexual intercourse then ensued. Nothing would come out of the encounter other than a ‘one night stand’ because the two participants knowingly have sexual intercourse with no repercussion or hint of relationship afterward.
