First of all, honey possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can be used for many therapeutic and healing purposes. E. With this in mind, research conducted by the American Medical Association also shows that honey contains antioxidant properties that can act as a natural immune system booster. F. Lastly, honey also possesses chemicals that could help prevent and fight cancer. Transition Before delving into honey’s most complex properties, I am going to start with the most common use of honey. Body I. In the first place, let’s explore the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of honey. a) To begin with, research conducted by the American Medical Association shows that honey reduces inflammation. i. As a result, it offers instant relief for cough and infections in the upper respiratory tract. ii. Similarly, honey can also help relieve the symptoms of seasonal allergies. b) Additionally, this research also shows that honey contains antibacterial properties. i. Therefore, a simply dressing of honey can be applied directly to skin wounds; such as, small cuts and scratches because it can act as an antibiotic. ii. The application of honey reduces the risk of infection and accelerates the healing process, which could reduce scars. …show more content…
In addition, these antioxidants can act as antidepressant during emotional and physical stress as well. d) According to the Department of Nutrition and Internal Medicine at the University of California and the National Honey Board, the antioxidant properties of honey could also add the following health benefits. i. The bioactive ingredients found in natural honey can boost your immune system. ii. Similarly, these bioactive ingredients could also boost your energy. Transition After learning the properties of honey, let’s delve into the one most innovating scientific studies of honey. III. Finally, let’s explore a study I found in an academic journal conducted by the Medical University of Poland, which shows that honey contains anticancer properties. e) In order to understand how honey could have an anticancer effect in our body, let’s quickly overview how cancer is developed. i. Cancer can be caused by damage to our DNA in the cells of our body. ii. Our diet and physical activity are factors that play an important role in the development of cancer. d) Honey contains two kinds of chemicals that protect the cells in our body. i. Honey has two kinds of phytochemicals, which can act as inhibitors that protect the DNA in the cells in our
“We lived for honey. We swallowed a spoonful in the morning to wake us up and one at night to put us to sleep. We took it with every meal to calm the mind, give us stamina, and prevent fatal disease. We swabbed ourselves in it to disinfect cuts or heal chapped lips” (Kidd
It has been taken quite recently from the honeycomb and has not yet lost all the honey flavor. It retains some of the scent of the flowers from which it was collected. Its color, shape, and size are manifest. It is hard and cold; it is easy to touch. If you rap on it with your knuckle it will emit a sound” (Descartes, 21).
The leaves could be rolled around in the hand and then placed on a wound to help it heal and prevent infection. A common remedy to treat insect bites and skin flare-ups, such as acne and eczema, was to soak the leaves in olive oil for a few weeks and then add beeswax before applying to the damaged area. The ridged edged leaves of a Monarda may look basic and like any other leaf of a flower, but they can heal a vast array of issues in astounding ways.
The best action the public can take to improve honey bee survival is not to use pesticides indiscriminately. In particular, the public should avoid applying pesticides during mid-day hours, when honey bees are most likely to be out foraging for nectar and pollen on flowering plants. In addition, the public can plant pollinator-friendly plants—plants that are good sources of nectar and pollen such as red clover, foxglove, bee balm, joe-pye weed, and other native plants.

Several infections and injuries can occur in the skin, some of which include burns, abrasions, ulcers, abscess, and tinea. All of these infections and injuries affect the dermis and should be treated according to individual cases. An abscess would be classified as a pus containing caused by bacteria and requires antibiotic drugs. Tinea is a skin infection brought on by fungus that feed on the epidermal cells. It should be treated immedi...
Throughout the nation catastrophes occur on a daily basis; however there are a few catastrophes that have taken national precedence and left a traumatized nation. Most usually these catastrophes are an act of terrorism. Michael Nelson (2010) describes the nature of such terrorism catastrophes as disconcerting, unanticipated and that unnerve “the country’s sense of safety and identity” (p. 20). When such “a traumatic event results in the death of civilians” and “calls the nation’s institutions or values into question” the nation as a whole looks to their leader, our president, to offer solace and calm through a responsive speech (Campbell and Jamieson, 2008, p. 102). In Presidents Creating the Presidency, (2008) the authors have labeled these speeches as a national eulogy in which they usually occur at the sight of the
I am going to tell youthe good things about alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is where you have to go out of state and get the treatment that you can’t get in the state you are in and then you have to get all the information that you need. When you do alternative medicine you are using the medicine to help the person that has the diseases that they have. With the increase in major diseases, alternative medicine is at a rise. People now have the option to travel to other countries for help. Alternative medicine are also increasingly used to diagnose or treat allergies, and numerous studies have reported benefits of this type of medicine. When you do this you can try and see what types of diseases or allergies that you have and if you do have anything then you can treat whatever you have. With the increase in diseases we have found we have suggested that people use alternative medicine because we can’t treat it ourselves. The people that we suggest to use alternative medicine they usually have major diseases that we can’t operate on and that we can’t treat. When people do that they have the best chance of getting better.
Healthy humans have two types of immune systems that protect the body from invading pathogens that cause diseases. The Innate Immunity is the first barrier of protection. It is similar to a force field. Its primary purpose is to destroy any pathogen that tries to enter the epidermis cells (the skin cells) and the mucosa (mucus secreting cells found in the GI tract, respiratory tract, urogenital tract and eyes. If the first defense does not work, the adaptive immunity steps in to eradicate the invading microbe. Yet, sometimes the body reacts to harmless agents as if they were pathogens. Every day, more adults develop allergies to things in their environment. Exposure to such things as pollen, grass, mold and pet dander1 can lead to mild or harmful reactions. Other allergens can cause tingling in the throat and mouth, and in many cases severe reaction that lead to death. 2 In the last couple of decades, 75 to 100 percent of asthma and 150 percent atopy have reported.4 17.7 million adults and 7.1 million were diagnosed with allergies and hay fever.5 There are no known reasons why people developed hypersensitivity to certain agents, yet, many adults are developing allergies later in life. Statistically, children are the ones who develop allergies the most. About 3.9 percent of children have allergies, whereas 2% of adults have it. 6 Then, why are adults becoming more and more susceptible to this affliction? One possible reason is foods and every day household products are making people sick. Could it be that constant exposure to known hypoallergenic agents are causing allergic reactions to develop in adults who have never displayed any allergic reactions in their lifetime?
Most cancer happens at different rates in other parts of the world. Lifestyle can increase a person’s risk for cancer because it can affect cells that are prepared to become cancerous by helping them grow. The environment can change genes which cause them to be cancerous in the first place. An abnormal cell is what causes a tumor. This cell appears to be no different from normal ones and only functions and divides when needed. Then, even though the organ it supports has a sufficient amount of cells, it divides uncontrollably (Weinberg 1-2).
Issues Facing Bees Bees pollinate many crops and are vital to the survival of human beings. The population of bees has been declining due to the use of pesticides, pollution and disease (Klein, Cabirol, Devaud, Barron, & Lihoreau, 2017). Why Local Raw Honey? Local Raw Honey differs from the other honeys because it is 100% raw honey with pollen from bees that is cared for properly by the local farmer. Most honey has the vitamin-packed pollen stripped from it and has corn syrup added to it (Muhammad & Maulidya, 2016).
The soft, fuzzy leaf of the wooly lamb’s ear plant is an excellent substitute for a bandage. Hunters and soldiers refer to the plant as woundwort and have used the leaves as field dressing for years with great success. Each leaf is antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory thus reducing the risk of infection setting in. Furthermore, it readily absorbs blood and assists in the blood clotting process. It is also safe to use on children and most livestock. These leaves are often used in conjunction with comfrey leaves to dress
When a wound is determined as non-healable, as described by Sibbald et al (1), it should not be treated with a moist treatment and should be kept dry in order to reduce the risk of infection that would compromise the limb. It is also important to consider the patient 's preferences and try to control his pain, his discomfort in activities of daily living and the odour that their wound may produce. In this case, special attention must be given to infection prevention and control. Some charcoal dressing would be interesting in the care of our non-healable wounds at St. Mary 's Hospital.
...not detrimental, and it’s always possible for people to build up a good relationship with bees. It is quite challenging, but the bees have a job to do and threatening their quality of life will consequentially threaten everyone’s. Another possible choice is to join a local beekeepers' association to become better informed about the care and keeping of honeybees and other steps you can take to stimulate colony growth and combat CCD. Scientists also have been working overtime in an attempt to determine the cause of CCD. They have linked CCD to many factors including the Varroa mite and Nosema. Recently, a Harvard biologist published a study directly linking the pesticide imidacloprid. Still the consensus is that multiple factors are to blame which is why many scientists are looking at ways to improve a honey bee’s health and immune system as the potential solution.
