Monarda fisctulosa had various uses for the Native Americans. This multipurpose plant may also be known as Bee Balm, horsemint, wild oregano, or many more. The most common name is bee balm due to the multitude of bees that are drawn in; some rest on the back side of flower petals, while others spread pollen between the plants. In total, there is approximately fifteen known species currently growing. The parts of the plant can be consumed in a variety of ways. The plant was, and still is, used to treat many issues and illnesses. This paper will describe the characteristics of Monarda, and the many uses for the leaves and flowers.

The leaves could be rolled around in the hand and then placed on a wound to help it heal and prevent infection. A common remedy to treat insect bites and skin flare-ups, such as acne and eczema, was to soak the leaves in olive oil for a few weeks and then add beeswax before applying to the damaged area. The ridged edged leaves of a Monarda may look basic and like any other leaf of a flower, but they can heal a vast array of issues in astounding ways.
The leaves aren’t the only appreciable part of this beauteous plant. The flowers of a Monarda have many tasty and medicinal uses too. The piquant taste of the flower pedals can be used as a substitute for mint in numerous recipes, since Monarda is in the same family as mint plants. It can also be hewed and added to green or fruit salads for amplified taste and color of a meal. For a healthy snack food, the pedals can be added to a bread mixture. The flowers are used in many recipes as substitution for other herbs or to create a spicy twist of its own in a

Ultima, an elderly curandera, teaches a young boy about herbal remedies by gathering plants growing in the llano to cure the sick. She uses herbs like juniper, yerba del manso, oregano, manzanilla, and osha. Juniper can be used for nausea, headaches, and even some bug bites. It is also used for ceremonial fires. “Of all the plants we gathered none was endowed with so much magic as the yerba del manso” (Anya 39). Yerba del manso could cure burns, sores, piles, colic in babies, bleeding dysentery, and even rheumatism. Oregano can be used for coughs, fever, asthma, and bronchitis. “We wandered on and found some oregano, and we gathered plenty because this was not only a cure for coughs and fever but a spice my mother used for beans and meat" (Anya 40). Ultima also gathers an herb called manzanilla. Manzanilla is used to calm anxiety and settle stomachs. It also eases heartburn, nausea, and vomiting. Ultima uses it to cure a man’s mollera illness. “We were also lucky to find some osha, because this plant grows better in the mountains . It is like yerba del manso, a cure for everything” (Anya 40). Osha helps with coughs, colds, cuts, bruises, stomach troubles and rheumatism. It can also keep poisonous snakes
Today, it’s still used to treat pain, headache and inflammatory conditions such as bursitis and tendinitis. The bark contains salicin, a chemical similar to aspirin. When combined with the herb's powerful anti-inflammatory plant compounds, flavonoids, salicin is thought to relieve pain (but not fever) and inflammation. In fact, aspirin is actually the brainchild of salicin.

Lucretia Mott was one of the first Americans to call publicity for women’s rights. Lucretia was born January 3, 1793. She grew up in a Quaker family. After 4 years of teaching, she moved to Philadelphia to be with her family. Her life was centered around the Quaker church. She supported abolition. She refused to buy products from slave labor. In 1833 she attended a male antislavery convention. After the convention she founded the Female Antislavery Society. By 1837 she was a speaker at women’s antislavery meetings and conventions. When Lucretia led women to an antislavery convention in 1840, the

One plant with medical use from the Apiaceae plant family was the carrot. It was used to treat Jaundice. I find this interesting because it is a plant considered to be a common food. One would not think it was anything special since it is so commonly found. It may have been used to treat Jaundice because of its color, or maybe because people who ate plenty of carrots never had eye problems.

Chamomile is one of the most ancient medicinal herbs used today. It is a member of the Asteraceae/Compositae family and comes in two different forms- German Chamomile and Roman Chamomile. Historically, the origin of the name Chamomile can from the Greeks who first noted that the smell resembled that of apples and therefore named it “ground apples.” What gives Chamomile its medicinal properties are its dried flowers, which contain terpenoids and flavonoids (lipids and pigment of the plant). In addition, oils of Chamomile are also used in cosmetics and aromatherapy with a distinct smell. Some traditional uses of Chamomile include: anti-spasmodic and sedative use for gastric disturbances and rheumatoid arthritis, treating parasitic worm infections, a skin wash for ulcers or any skin conditions, and lastly having anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties to treat certain health conditions such as colic, cystitis, fever, flatulence and vomiting.

The use of alternative medicine is becoming more prevalent in society. As pharmaceuticals and other medications continue to show room for improvement, the use of herbal remedies will increase as a result. Herbal remedies involve the use of plants for medicinal purposes (Newman, 2012). Long before the modern technology, chemicals, and mechanisms that are popular today, plants were used as the basis for most medical treatments. As improvements in education and resources arose throughout the years there was a shift towards modern medicine, which is heavily based on evidence that has been gathered using the scientific method. Due to the lack of scientific reliability, the use of herbal remedies raises some doubt and concern. However, it is important to consider the effectiveness of herbal remedies that are derived from the natural sources surrounding us. Although in past eras chronic illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, hepatitis and cancer either didn’t exist or were not properly identified, it is necessary to analyze whether traditional medicines and herbs can be effective in treating these serious diseases today. This will be the focus of the discussions in this paper. In modern societies these illnesses often are not curable and therefore considering alternative methods such as herbal remedies deserves merit. Each herb has specific value when being used for medicinal purposes. Some herbs are effective when used to treat chronically ill patients.
Frequently a person believes that herbal medicine is more naturally safe and soothing than drugs. Nevertheless, there’s no reasonable defense about this. Though many consumers trusted herbal medicine much more than the synthetic medicine because it’s safe and effective, but like anything else, it has its own limitations too. There are several hostile issues related to herbal medicine that has been quite alarming. Notwithstanding, majority of the most popular herbs are at least nearly safe.
