Football has always been defined by the men who play the game and their masculinity and strength utilized on the field to defeat their opponent. A player’s sexual orientation should not be a weighing factor when determining how valuable an athlete is on the field. NFL players are typically defined by their masculinity and manly strength showcased on the field, making it a challenge for homosexual players to be open about their sexual preference out of fear of being ridiculed or being deemed a sub-par player. Michael Sam was the first openly homosexual player to be drafted to the league. Is it morally right to judge one’s ability because of their sexuality?
Recently, the stigma surrounding homosexuality has progressed a long way. Society has learned to be more

The game’s various stereotypes make it hard for a man in the league to have a different sexual preference than the “normal,” heterosexual. Most people view football as the manliest sport, due to its constant physical contact of tackling one another. Many believe that this is a “man’s game,” and that there should not be homosexuals in the league, which causes a great controversy. Our nation’s view on homosexuality has gradually changed, so why shouldn’t football, an all American sport, also be able to progress and drop the stigma around having openly homosexual players in the league still be considered exceptional athletes? Another reason why the NFL might not be interested in drafting a homosexual player is because of the money. The league is interested in making hundreds of thousands of dollars and by selecting a homosexual player like Michael Sam, the NFL runs the risk of a large loss of money and a negative hit to the fan base, which is not something the league is willing to sacrifice. There also have been various speculations that the NFL is not ready to have an openly gay player in the
The NFL position in this article makes them look very greedy and indifferent about the overall health of their football players. One of the ethical perspectives that can be used to analyze the NFL's position in this article is deontology. Deontology is the perspective where rules is the defining factor for ethical decisions. From the deontology perspective it makes it seem that the NFL has decided not to follow the rules and even blurred the lines as to what potential injuries their players can get. They wanted their injured players to play without having to follow through the with proper procedure in verifying that the players are in conditions healthy enough to play. It looks as if the NFL cares only about bringing in money and not care about
... so many lives are suppressed, depressed and carry the plague of a negative stigma. Suppressed feelings, self esteem, and personal sexual choice is hindered by the norms and expectations of our society.
The diversity issue within America’s most popular game is apparent. Both the NFL and FBS are at an all time high in terms of revenue and viewership while the opportunity for minorities to coach at these levels has become a significant issue especially in collegiate football. Lack of proper awareness and prejudice beliefs are the core of the problem. The NFL has taken many steps to help improve the issue, while college football is beginning to realize the problem they have in hiring procedures. Many people believe the sports are turning a corner, others continue to believe they are far from resolving the issue. Whatever notion one takes in this matter it is clear that both sports suffer from a major lack in diversity when it comes to the face of their franchises and programs.
For years homosexuality in the United States of America has been looked down upon by citizens, religions, and even politicians. The homosexual culture, or the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender), has been demoralized and stuck out and lashed against by the Heterosexual community time and time again. To better understand the LGBT community we must first grasp the concept of Sexual Orientation.
National Football League, African American male’s overrepresentation as professional athletes seem to illustrate opportunities for the group unfettered by any major barriers
The National Football League is made up of 32 teams that were once founded in 1920 by a group of people who helped form the league. In the beginning the league wasn’t really structured to what it is now. Teams will just play and no playoff games, seeding’s, or the game itself matter because not only was the game was overshadow by America’s past time baseball, but it was difficult because the college game was established as well. Owning a team was extremely hard because owner’s will spent large amounts of cash and participate in bidding wars for players. Fast-forward to today’s day and age it is safe to say the NFL may be the most brutal and exciting game to play. Rule’s and norms are intact for teams to do things more ethical. Money is what really drives this business and of course constant advertisement to promote its brand. With some of that revenue, the NFL has opened a program called NFL: Play 60. The purpose of this program is to encourage kids to be physically active for 60 minutes in a day to reduce America’s child obesity. The NFL has been successful because in 2010 the first lady Michelle Obama announced it would be teaming up with NFL PLAY 60 as a health imitative for children. This was a great move for the brand because The First Lady’s office and...
The false accusations of many male cheerleaders being gay serve no purpose but to bring the cheerleader down. They love to do what they do and when someone labels them differently, it undermines what the cheerleader actually does. Male cheerleaders exhibit qualities that women do not, which gives men an advantage in certain cases. The misleading information of men joining the cheerleading squad to impress a girl also shows that people do not understand that everybody has different interests and how they chose to express that interest. The fact that a cheerleader is male should not affect how a person’s intelligence is measured, but their work ethic should reflect the grades of the person. Just because of the way society has placed genders on certain sports should not be the reason to judge someone as dumb, gay, or having interest for something fueled by someone other than themselves. So in the words of Megan Barlly, male cheerleaders are the “powerhouses [that] bring a whole new element to the sport”
Since sports and athletics have been brought into our society it has always been gender specific. For example, it is seen that males should be playing the rough and tough sports or athletics such as rugby and football, whereas the women should be participating in less competitive sports and athletics such as swimming, or running. Can you imagine that the world population of women is around forty-nine percent and they still aren’t given the same opportunities or respect as men? Being a women in the twenty-first century playing one of those “non-traditional” sports is a tough task for these women. The women who choose to do so are usually questioned about their sexuality and
Many people in society argue about the unfairness of transgenders competing in sports. Transgenders should be able to be on the sports team that matches their gender identity with medical documents proving they have gender dysmorphia. Many other athletes would argue that transgenders being able to compete in sports is unfair. A transgender woman who has higher levels of testosterone than the other women might seem to have an advantage over the other female athletes. Transgender women might have a little bit of an advantage, but they truly feel as if they are women, so they should be able to compete as women.
Franchises of professional sports teams fork out millions of dollars to minority athletes every year. When dealing with huge amounts of money there is no question about discriminating against minorities. Franchises wouldn't pay out millions of dollars to athletes that aren't qualified. Athletes are constantly being traded and released from teams. These athletes may be of minority gender, but they are definitely not being traded or released because of race. They are most likely going to end up at another team that will pay them a good deal of money.
In the 1990's there has been what is called a "normalized movement"(Warner 41). This so-called movement has permeated into all aspects of the Gay and Lesbian movement's agenda. It has become increasingly clear in the realms of the media such as television, movies and magazines. The major objective for the proponents of this movement is to make the homosexual seem "normal." This would be done by not focusing on the sexual nature of the homosexual. Since their sexual behavior is considered deviant by society, any outward expression of it will be looked down upon. So, it has been the goal of some leaders of the movement as well as those who control the media outlets to separate the identity and sexuality of the homosexual as far as possible.
Whether its baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, or tennis, sports is seen all over the world as a representation of one’s pride for their city, country, and even continent. Sports is something that is valued world-wide which has the ability to bring communities together and create different meanings, beliefs and practices between individuals. Although many people may perceive sports to have a significant meaning within our lives, it can also have the ability to separate people through gender inequalities which can also be represented negatively throughout the media. This essay will attempt to prove how gender is constructed in the sports culture while focusing on female athletes and their acceptance in today’s society.
An issue that has, in recent years, begun to increase in arguments, is the acceptability of homosexuality in society. Until recently, homosexuality was considered strictly taboo. If an individual was homosexual, it was considered a secret to be kept from all family, friends, and society. However, it seems that society has begun to accept this lifestyle by allowing same sex couples. The idea of coming out of the closet has moved to the head of homosexual individuals when it used to be the exception.
... that it is turning onto a social norm in Western cultures. Most religions in Western Culture have been basing their stances on how society changes and evolves. Christian churches are becoming more and more flexible with members who may identify as homosexual.
I want you to become aware of what we have done and take action to stop people to be happy, to respect their way of thinking, acting, and living. My purpose in writing this paper is to present my points of view on how society has changed as the years go by. Also how homosexuals have fought for many years and all the different struggles they have managed to get the rights they deserve and one day had which were then taken away because they became themselves and also because of the ignorance of some people.
