About Homebase
Homebase was founded in 1979 and they opened their first store in Croydon, Surrey in 1981. Today, they have nearly 300 stores throughout the UK where they serve over one million customers every week.

The functional areas in Homebase are very effective because it splits up all of the jobs into categories and the categories are called departments e.g. IT Support and administration. Having business functions make running large businesses easier to run. Homebase have little offshoots in the functional areas so that it makes it even easier to run then at the end of every week they have department meetings where they put all of their heads together within the department to see what sort of things they have come up with.

Homebase communicates internally by using memo's for important notes etc for other people they also have a few billboards spread around and one main big one in the staff room where the employees can put leaflets and posters on and can advertise parties, gatherings. They also backup all memo's and make copies for future references by scanning them onto a computer instead of collecting them

Homebase communicates externally mainly by using telephones, fax machines and letters. They would use letters for things which isn't urgent and important like ordering stock, they use fax machines to communicate with other companies about any ideas for products, sponsorships etc, they use the telephones for customer based calls like complaints so in conclusion they put the customers first by giving them a direct contact so they feel they are the main priority and the other businesses are second priority.
Homebase's external influences are their business competitors, economic conditions and environmental constraints.

Established as the older company of the two, Lowe’s ranks forty-second as a Fortune 500 company. Established in 1946 as a small hardware business, Lowe’s has grown into a 40,000 product, global market enterprise that consist of 1,710 stores nationwide expanding into the countries of Canada, Mexico and Australia (Lowe's Internal, 2010) Home Depot, founded in 1978, is the fastest growing retailer in the United States. Ranked twenty-ninth as a Fortune 500 company, Home Depot continues to remain the number one do-it-yourself retail store in America. These two companies may sell products of the same nature, but comparing their Code of Ethics is their way of setting themselves apart. (Home Depot Internal, 2009)
In the early 2000’s Lowe’s was rapidly intensifying its presence nationwide. The company carried a varied assortment of home improvement products and catered to the needs of retail as well as commercial business customers. Lowe’s expanded their reach by acquiring a 41-store chain, Eagle Hardware and Garden, and engaging in a strategic alliance with HGTV to obtain a more profound existence in their market (Rouse, 2005). By 2004, Lowe’s operated almost 1,000 stores with plans to continue expansion across the nation (Rouse, 2005). The company has a core competency in helping customers meet their home improvement needs at a low price. In order to use this core competency to gain a competitive advantage, the company has focused on key functional strategies. To continue their success, Lowe’s must specifically focus on marketing, logistics, and human resource management strategies.
Silas House is an American writer born in 1971 in Lily, Kentucky. He spent most his childhood outside playing and enjoying nature as most kids in Appalachia do. He went to Sue Bennett College, Eastern Kentucky University, and got his masters at Spalding University. He grew up and is known for his novels but also is a music journalist, environmental activist, and a columnist. The times as a kid help develop the writer his is today most his works revolve or have nature in them because it was such a big part of his life and still is. In his novel A Parchment of Leaves he takes about nature “Confluence of the Redbud Creek and the Black Banks River.” He’s a true American writer because he writes about America it’s self.
Home Depot was founded in 1978 by Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank in Atlanta, Georgia. With their store, Marcus and Blank revolutionized the do-it-yourself home improvement market in the United States. Home Depot began as a very basic store, operated in a large, no-frills warehouse. Home Depot carries over 35,000 products, with national brand names along with the Home Depot brand. At the start, Home Depot was able to offer exceptional customer service with knowledgeable employees who could guide customers through home renovation projects. Since its opening, Home Depot has experienced incredible growth, and today is North America's second largest retailer, and the largest home improvement retailer. Internationally, Home Depot has expanded into Canada, Mexico, and is beginning to operate stores in China. Home Depot's competition includes Sears, Ace Hardware and Lowes (the main competitor).
Home Depot operates in the home improvement retail industry that comprises of retailer that sell appliances, lumber, building material, kitten fittings and other home improvement products aimed at improving existing structures. Companies functioning in the home improvement industry buy products from retailer and manufacturer based all over the world, and then put those products for sale on the market to three types of buyers, generally characterized as: do-it-for-me, do-it-yourself, and professional customers. The home improvement retail industry is well established industry and is highly attractive and there is high level of price competition among the key players of the industry as the products lines are all the same.

When the novel begins, Tom Joad, the protagonist of the story has just been released from the state prison in Oklahoma. He makes his way home to his family to find that the area has been deserted with everyone being “tractored” off the land. Most families, including Tom’s are headed to California in search of new work and new lives. Tom finds his family and they decide to take a huge risk by giving up the land they’ve been tethered to for generations. This uprooting of their family begins a long, slow change in identity for many family members as well as family dynamics and structure.
Best Buy has grown steadily and improved its business and customer’s experience in many ways throughout its journey from 1966 until 2011. The company’s main objective is to focus on making the customers visit to the store as pleasant and as informative as possible. The company is on its steady path of revolution and innovation by implementing customer driven and technology powered strategies. When any new business is setup, it faces its preliminary phase challenges and so has Best Buy but now the business is booming in the world of technology. It’s well known to be a one stop shop for all technological needs.
Everybody has heard the old saying that crime does not pay. Eventually crime and breaking the law will catch up with you. This theme is one commonly found in literature, TV and cinema. And, it is one of the messages Law & Order: Special Victims Unit represents. In this NBC television series, the SVU specializes in sexual offense crimes. This is told to viewers in narrative form in the opening sequence of each episode. Through the representation of the vicious and heinous crimes being investigated in each episode, the ideology of this show is that while the criminal justice system may be hard and flawed at times, as a whole it works and is best for American society.
Sinclair Lewis makes point of the efforts that Carol produces to reform her new home. These efforts can be perceived by the townspeople as unwelcomed and unsuccessful. Some of Carol’s ideas are ludicrous, out of proportion and not ready for the slow-moving town. She tries several different approaches to reforming the town from the moment of her arrival. She goes from architectural reform to poetic reform to artistic to introducing liberalism to amusing social functions. All of these tactics she hopes will spring forth a reform movement to beautify and culturalize the town and people. Her initial attempts at bringing the town out of its shell consisted of throwing fun and exciting parties. Such as her Chinese house-warming party on page 66. She plans this social event as a way to bring the people out of their normal funeral parlor routine of sitting in a circle and making small talk. For the moment she is successful, but soon after she implements sledding, skiing and skating outings, people begin to recoil back into their normal routines. Again, Carol is frustrated with the progress of the town, and she soon feels rejected by the social elite at the Jolly Seventeen club on page 78. Her attempts to open the minds of the Jolly Seventeen to the issues of the lower class, backfires into a discussion of foreign incompetencies and laziness. An organization benefits from organizational structure as a result of all it encompasses. It is used to define how tasks are divided, grouped and coordinated. Six elements should be addressed during the design of the organization’s structure: work specialization, departmentalization, chain of command, spans of control, centralization and decentralization. These components are a direct reflection of the organization’s culture, power and politics.
