Introduction Home health care is a rapidly increasing service in the health care industry. “Home care is projected to require another 1 million workers between 2012 and 2022, making it the highest growth occupation in the United States, according to PHI Policy Works, a national strategy center working to strengthen the direct-care workforce. It further estimates that by 2020, direct-care workers will be the nation’s largest occupation sector, with nearly 5 million jobs” (Rural Cooperatives). Statistics by The Department of Health and Human Services states, Home healthcare workers are predominantly female (89%) with 24.4% self-identified as black or African American, 20.0% as Hispanic or Latino, and 4.4% as Asian. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approximates that 8,090 home health care agencies in the United States provide care for more than 2.4 million elderly and disabled people annually. Research provided evidence of problem areas where healthcare crucially needs improvement within the homes. These areas include; fall prevention, unplanned hospital admissions, nurse work environment, and quality of life. Falls among the elderly is very common due to balance problems, weakness, and absence of handrails in the home. Apart from falls, infections, pressure ulcers, and respiratory conditions can contribute to hospital admissions for some clients. If the quality of care that clients receive is not to its highest standard then the care need to be assessed. Steve Olson addressed this issue in his writing about the environment of home healthcare.
