After hitchhiking across multiple countries, HitchBots’ hike was ended in downtown Philadelphia.“Created through a collaboration between McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and Ryerson University in Toronto, its inventors said they planned to have the robot hitchhike from East Coast to West Coast as part of a social experiment,”(The Recorder 1). They created a robot that would rely on the kindness of strangers to take it to it’s next destination. “It was designed to be unfailingly polite in its requests for help and could carry on a limited conversation,”(Carter 2).And could also share a number of factoids along the way. He had a GPS inside the body to allow his creators to keep track on him. But before HitchBot made his way onto the United States he had already traveled across Canada, the Netherlands, and Germany. recall taking Hitchbot to a comic book convention and even a wedding. The creators then decided to experiment with HitchBot in America.
The hike began in Massachusetts. After a time in Marblehead he was carried to Boston . HitchBots’ Twitter feed consisted of Pictures at the public garden and the Duck Tour. He later on went to Fenway park where fans dressed him in a Red Sox Jersey. When HitchBot eventually arrived to New York he was also photographed in Times Square. But as he continued traveling he ended up in Philadelphia where he was torn to shreds and left in the street. The creators found out because an image was sent to them of vandalized HitchBot. But before this act of vandalism, strangers had been nothing but respectful and affectionate to HitchBot. Over the years researchers have tried to see how robots were accepted in different roles. In fact, when asked , 48 percent of people in Europe said that they would work with a robot. American Brutality has been a big social problem in the United States and is still increasing . But what has happened now is that humans are harming things now for no reason. There could be a vast number of \ reasons that could have caused the vandalism to occur
. The person or persons who attacked this unthreatening robot are probably grown up in a violent environment. Some people grew up in a family where there is no love, kindness, or respect for each other. Some parents are very cruel and abusive both mentally and physically. And these children follow the pattern of what they have seen and become very negative and abusive adults who do not care about their families or anybody else and much less for a robot. Another reason could be that this person was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. When a person is in this state of mind their thinking is not correct. A lot of people do very unacceptable things when they are drunk and they don't realise what they have done until they are sober and it’s too late. The route of HitchBot was unsafe and dangerous . He needed to travel from Massachusetts to San Francisco, California . “There are vandals in every neighborhood of every country,”(Murrant 1). Sadly it happened in the city that is suppose to be of brotherly love. It is somewhat the router's fault for giving a dangerous route where the robot would most likely be destroyed. “Its overall design with a plastic bucket for a body, pool noodle arms and legs, and matching rubber gloves and boots was meant to be quirky and fun,”(The Recorder 1). This could also be a reason because people see this robot and think that it's not worth anything or it looks stupid. The robot didn’t do anything really but just sit there. So it kind of doesn't make sense for it to be here and that’s what could have gone through the guy or guys’ heads’. But whatever the reason could of been . It's unacceptable for a grown man to do this to something completely harmless. Media has been very at describing things and making them known. Media can really spread news around the world very quickly. In the case of HitchBot, there is no exception. People were taking pictures and posting the encounters with him on Facebook, Twitter, etc. “The creators were sent an image of the vandalized robot Saturday August 1 but could not track its location because its battery was dead,”(Fieldstadt 3). The creators knew that the robot was destroyed within one day because of the media has aired the news out the world. On August 2, Lauren O’neil posted a photo which shows that HitchBots’ head was missing and his arms were ripped off.very sad to see. Anyone can now express their opinions and feelings on the situation . There are many articles that are over different people's opinions whether on HitchBot deserved it or not and so on. And now that it has happened in the United States , it puts a lot of attention on us and makes us look bad and unfriendly. And because it happened in Philadelphia, it changed peoples views on the city in a negative way . And not only the city but the entire country . Even though downtown Philadelphia may have been dangerous already, it caught the spotlight and everyone's focusing on that one city when HitchBot is brought up. But I think that what people see in movies and video games and all these other things affect that person's mind and change their views on it. The media has been both positive and negative about spreading news . Now the effects of media vary because everyone thinks differently and everyone has a different perspective. The owners and the people that follow him are very sad, they are trying to understand what and why this happened and who did it. It has brought out the stereotype for some people that the United States is a bad place with violent people.
Ilya Varshavsky’s “Perpetual Motion” is the story of humanity’s relationship with technology. During a human council meeting, where humans superficially decide how their world will function, Class A robots demand equality with humanity. The human council is initially appalled, but after these robots explain they will supplement their labor with the labor of a new race of robots humanity grants their wish. Twenty years later, during a Class A robot council meeting, the topic of equality for Class B robots is introduced in a similar manner to the way Class A freedom was discussed. In order to grant equality to Class B robots, the Class A robots discuss the need to teach humans how to survive without them. They resolve to teach humans how

Ray Bradbury’s “The Pedestrian” conveys a story about the terrors of the future and how man eventually will lose their personality. Leonard Mead, a simple man, walks aimlessly during the night because it is calming to him. “For thousands of miles, [Mead] had never met another person walking, not once in all that time,” but on one fateful night, a mechanical police officer sent Leonard away because of his odd behavior (Bradbury, Ray). This story shows what the future will bring to mankind. During the time of Bradbury, 1920 to 2012, technology began evolving from very simple mechanics to very complex systems that we know today. Bradbury feared that some day, technology will take over and send mankind into a state of anarchy and despair. Bradbury, influenced by society, wrote “The Pedestrian” to warn people about the danger of technology resulting in loss of personality.
Then, we learned to identify the thesis for the article “Autonomous Robotic Technology Could Pose A Serious Threat to Humanity” by Wendell Wallach and Colin Allen. The instructor showed us a reading about “Ethos, Pathos, and Logos” and instructed us how to use them effectively. From there, I started to develop some of the argument that I could use in my
Brunvand, Jan Harold. The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends & Their Meanings. New York: W. W. Norton, 1981.
“The Hitchhiker,” by Lucille Fletcher, narrates the unusual happenings Ronald Adams, the protagonist, experiences, while driving along the deserted and densely populated roads of the United States. Adams continually observes a hitchhiker, whom he first saw, having almost hit him, on the Brooklyn Bridge, and apprehends traveling on the highways, for fear this phantasmal man shall reappear. Struggling to grasp reality once receiving news of his mother’s breakdown after the death of her son, Ronald Adams, he reverts his attention to the hitchhiker, the realization of never having been who he thought he was, and being alone without protection from the traveler, both wrench his mind in two. Lucille Fletcher uses suspense to build the plot of, “The
Never since its first use in tracking quarry has this incredible invention made a mistake.” (Bradbury 126). The example shows that the mechanical hound is being used to find people and track people down. It is assumed that the mechanical hound has replaced the traditional job of a fireman and the police or swat team, causing people to lose their job for a robot that does their job more proficiently. In the United States alone, within 15 years, 38% of jobs are at risk of being replaced with automatics, with Britain following at 30%, 35% in Germany, and 21% in Japan.
One of the major technological advancements in Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is the development of robots. The Mechanical Hound, a fierce creature that seems to have powers greater than human ones, “represent[s] the whole technological society for Montag” (Kerr). This creature was created to catch criminals a...
To begin, in the short story “The Pedestrian” by Rad Bradbury, technology is worshipped and this shows that mankind has come to a point where society loses its humanity. Bradbury reveals that the character, Mr. Leonard Mead, who is least associated with technology is the most humane. The author does this by describing the “little
The novel, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other (2011) written by Sherry Turkle, presents many controversial views, and demonstrating numerous examples of how technology is replacing complex pieces and relationships in our life. The book is slightly divided into two parts with the first focused on social robots and their relationships with people. The second half is much different, focusing on the online world and it’s presence in society. Overall, Turkle makes many personally agreeable and disagreeable points in the book that bring it together as a whole.
Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock will be forever known through the annals of film history as the “Master of Suspense”. His illustrious career as a director of film spanned over six decades, 55 years to be exact. Throughout these years he left audiences in theatres clutching their seats in angst and perplexed by his thrillers. Hitchcock’s works have stood the test of time and have left audiences of today in awe of his techniques, which remain relevant in Hollywood and film schools to this day. Hitchcock directed 66 films in his career, but this essay will look at three of them that in my opinion emphatically represent the style and themes used by the great man they call “Hitch”. Most of these themes intertwine with the stylistic choices of Hitchcock throughout the three films I have selected. This essay will cover a range of them, from the theme of the audience as voyeur and how Hitchcock is able to accomplish this through the use of camera, to the use of birds as a recurring theme and motif through both plot and use of mise-en-scene. Another Hitchcock devised concept that I will be covering in this essay include the infamous “MacGuffin” plot device, the use of character in his films; specifically Hitchcock’s very own cameos throughout his films. The films that I will be covering in this essay are Rear Window (1954), Psycho (1960) and The Birds (1963).
Have you ever thought that the possibility exists that inanimate objects are in fact “plotting against people” in an effort to make our lives even more difficult than they actually are? In “The Plot against People,” Russell Baker, a newspaper columnist and humorist, adopts a wry view of the world in which he gives inanimate objects mischievous aims. As a class assignment, I was called upon to write my own version in the style of Baker.
Robots Are Taking Over Humans Jobs In the Terminator film series, the Terminator is from a world controlled by robots. Technology got so advanced that Cyber Dyne Systems Skynet took over human-controlled robots and nuked the world. This story is impossible in reality, but robots should not be taken lightly in today’s world. Technology in the 21st century is getting more advanced every day.
In today's society, robots come in different types and qualities, and robots’ use was mainly in the laboratories and factories; however, that has drastically changed where their uses are changing at a high speed. In addition to that, they have spread throughout the world. The main function of robots is to replace the work that people used to do, or perform tasks that man cannot. A robot is a mechanical or virtual device that uses a computer program, or electronic circuitry, to carry out its functions. In modern science, robotics refers to the study of robots is robotics, which deals with designing, constructing, operating, and using robots and computer systems for controlling and processing information and providing feedbacks. However, as much as robots replace human labor, individuals or organizations can use them in dangerous environments that might be harmful and beneficial to humans. Therefore, to understand the logic behind the creation of robots, one should learn the pros and cons of robotics, in the current society. This is because people are using this technology without having a deep understanding of its effects. However, an objective evaluation of the use of robots, in the modern society, shows that they have a positive influence on human beings, but if the robots were overused, it could lead to a negative side. which shows why human beings should use robots wisely that will result an improvement to their societies and own lives. Robots have become interactive equipment whereby they have become part of human life. In this regard, people use them directly or indirectly to enhance the quality of their lives. However, Sharkey argues that there are ethical issues that arise because of using robots to enhance hu...
To conclude, robots could be the backbone of the society that will result in a technological revolution. Because of robots various characteristics that do not experience fear, nor exhaustion and they are precisely programmed, which make them able to help in case of need, housework, and factories production. Society needs to put the issue of robots into consideration to satisfy any shortage exists in the world.
