The club was formed as Newton Heath L&YR F.C. in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. The club's shirts were green and gold halves. They played on a small, dilapidated field on North Road, near the future site of the Manchester Piccadilly railway station for fifteen years, before moving to Bank Street in the nearby town of Clayton in 1893. The club had entered the Football League the previous year and began to sever its links with the rail depot, becoming an independent company, appointing a club secretary and dropping the "L&YR" from their name to become simply Newton Heath F.C.. Not long afterwards, in 1902, the club neared bankruptcy, with debts of over £2500. At one point, their Bank Street …show more content…
H. Davies, the managing director of Manchester Breweries. Legend goes that Harry Stafford, the club captain, was showing off his prized St. Bernard dog at a club fund-raiser, when Davies approached him to buy the dog. Stafford declined, but was able to persuade Davies to invest in the club and become club chairman.[11] It was decided at one of the early board meetings that the club required a change of name to reflect the fresh start they had been afforded. Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic were among the names suggested, before Louis Rocca, a young immigrant from Italy, said "Gentlemen, why don't we call ourselves Manchester United?"[12] The name stuck, and Manchester United officially came into existence on 26 April 1902. Davies also decided it would be appropriate to change the club's colours, abandoning the green and gold halves of Newton Heath, and picking red and white to be the colours of Manchester …show more content…
They were promoted again in 1925, but struggled to get into the top half of the table, and were relegated again in 1931. In the eight years leading up to World War II, the club became somewhat of a yo-yo club, reaching their all-time lowest position of 20th in Division Two in 1934. They were promoted and relegated once again before being promoted in the penultimate season before World War II. They guaranteed their place in the top flight for after the war by finishing in 14th in the 1938-39 season. United struggled to replace Busby, and the team struggled under Wilf McGuinness in the 1969-70 season, finishing a disappointing 8th, and following a poor start to the 1970-71 season, McGuinness was demoted back to the position of reserve team coach. Busby was coaxed back to the club, albeit only for six months. Results got better with Busby's guidance, but he finally left the club for the last time in the summer of 1971. In the meantime, United had lost a number of high-profile players such as Nobby Stiles and Pat
Over all their years in playing football their record is 739-544, and they have forty-two ties. They also lead the NFL with that record. They have not always been called the Chicago Bears, though. When the league first stared out they were called the Decatur Staley’s. They were called the Staley’s because the A.E. Staley food starch company funded the start of the team. In 1921 the team moved to Chicago and became the Chicago Staley’s. They were called the Bears because of the Cubs baseball team. Former player George Halas became the coach and was given 5000 dollars to keep the Staley’s name. In 1922, he changed the name to the Bears to reflect the Cubs basebal...

“Smokey Joe” Wood was selected because of what he did in the 1912 season. It was easily his best of his career, and it’s also arguably one of the greatest seasons by any pitcher ever. He won an astonishing thirty-four games while only losing five. He had a 1.91 ERA (Earned Run Average) while striking out 258 batters. Since 1900 there has only been 21 times a pitcher has won over thirty games. Wood’s thirty-four win season is the sixth highest total; however, after this season he was never again able to reach this level of success in his career. He won 117 of th...
Did you know the Steelers haven’t always been called the Steelers? When Arthur Rooney purchased the team he named them the Pittsburgh Pirates. He got this name from the Pittsburgh National League Baseball Team. But in 1940, the Pirates became the Steelers, in order to generate more fan support. This name came from the city’s primary source of employment. This was an honor for the Steelers, being able to represent Pittsburgh steel heritage.
Formed in 1872, Rangers Football club’s initial connection to Protestantism, like many other football clubs at the time, was not much more than that they were made up of Protestant players. In addition to this, Rangers immediately found support and created strong links with the world of shipbuilding, a predominately Protestant profession at the time. However, despite these connections, Rangers’ association with Protestantism was pushed to the forefront until after the formation of Celtic. With Celtic’s strong ties to Catholicism, Protestants in Glasgow wanted a team of their own. Conflict and competition between Catholics and Protestants in the shipbuilding industry naturally pushed Rangers to take that role. "

Many complications overwhelmed the game of pro football with increasing regularity (“NFL History by Decade” 1). The need for a sense of order for rules and regulations brought these men, which also included George Halas, together in Canton to create the first professional football league(1). “Eleven franchises were represented at the meeting: Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Decatur Staleys, Chicago Cardinals, Cleveland Indians Dayton Triangles, Hammond Pros, Massillon Tigers, Muncie Flyers, Rock Island Independents, an...
Chicago Cubs baseball goes all the way back to April 25th, 1876 when they played the first game in the history of the Chicago National League Ball Club. However; at the time, they were not known as the “Cubs.” In general, they were known as the “White Stockings.” But a select few referred to them as the “Colts,” or “Orphans.” The team played in only five different locations in the 1800s because of the lack of places to play baseball at the time. As years went by, the league became popular, becoming one of the sports first dynasties. Chicago won six of the first eleven inaugural National League Championships (Cubs Timeline). In 1902, Frank Selee began managing Chicago to debut his managerial career. Just like managers, the name changed as well. A local newspaper penned the nickname “Cubs” for the first time. The name grew on people over time and was officially adopted in 1907. The year after that, victory arose in the city of Chicago. The season was filled with some of the greatest old-time baseball players. The batting line-up consisted of many good hitters and not jus...
The Philadelphia Eagles started back in 1933, a new team that wanted to show the rest of the league that they want to win even if they must do anything to win. Even though the Eagles were just brought into the league at that time they brought an impact even if half the team was gone because of the draft for the war back in 1934. That didn't stop the Eagles because at that time finding players were hard because of the War, so the Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers formed as one team for the season and was the Steagles which only lasted a season.
Football was invented in 1879 by Walter Camp; he attended Yale from 1876 to 1882 and was head advisory football coach from 1888 to 1912. Camp helped evolve the rules of the game away from rugby and soccer into the rules of American Football as they are known today. An influence to Walter Camp’s invention was William Ellis who was the first person noted for picking up the ball during a soccer game and running with it. From that point, Camp began to assess the rules of football. Football is an fairly understandable sport; one can begin learning the aspects of catching and walking with a football at around the age of two. About 25 years ago, the National football Association did not have the reputation it has today, with the continuous rise of sports television packages, the release of video games, and the invention of the internet perpetuating the regional growth across the United States, and inevitably, the world. The broadcasts began in 1939 with the first pro football game airing on television as network executives began to realize the advertisement could potentially generate substantial profits. Networks began broadcasting football once a week and it quickly became a product turning into their top income stream. By this time, football was given a huge amount of global exposure, eventually increasing with international broadcasts and internet media. ...
Games similar to soccer were played in China as early as 400 B.C. In 200 A.D. the Romans played a game in which 2 teams tried to score by advancing the ball across a line on a field, which means no soccer goals. They passed the ball to one another, but not by kicking it. Also in the 1100's, London children played a form of soccer (World Book Encyclopedia, S p.73).
It was the beginning of an era. Arsene Wenger slowly but steadily put together his team and they were soon title contenders. He built a team that was full of conspicuous talent. It was a team which played an intricate brand of football with Dennis Bergkamp at the helm of affairs. He completed his jigsaw by adding Thierry Henry, Sol Campbell and Patrick Viera. These three along with their legendary captain Tony Adams, Dennis Bergkamp, Mark Overmars, Freddie Ljungberg and Robert Pires changed the complexion of the Gunners in the turn of the millennia.
Football is a full contact sport that millions of fans watch every season even though it is not a worldwide sport yet. Baseball may be America’s past time but football is America’s obsession. It is played on a field but the athletes seem more like gladiators fighting for blood in the arena for the amusement of their fans. The sport has changed drastically over the years into an event unlike any other, from gaining fans to implementing new rules and regulations in order to keep players safe.
The first game was believed to be a modified version of rugby and soccer that was played in 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton. Walter Camp was the first to person write the rules while at the Massasoit convention in 1876. Due to the increasingly popularity of the game, many local athletic clubs picked up the game and began playing it competitively against one another. From 1892 to 1895 the clubs began to pay and write contracts with players, which led to the first professional team being put together in 1896. Once teams began to form, a professional football league became established along with the first World Series in 1902. In 1903, while many college teams were playing the sport, Harvard became the first university to build a stadium designed for football. After being very popular in the Pennsylvania area, the popularity shifted towards Ohio, who at the time had seven pro teams. These seven teams formed their own league, which had created their own universal rules, and played for an Ohio League Championship. Organizations faced problems with the difference in salaries and the constant change of teams for the most popular players. In 1920, the teams came to a conclusion on the repeating problems that were occurring. This led to the start of the APFA, American Professional Football Conference, and by 1922, football had become a more established game with 18 active football teams, mostly in states throughout the Midwest. The name was also changed in this year to the name everybody now knows today, the National Football League or NFL. The NFL began to get more national attention when more star collegiate players started signing contracts with NFL organizations. In 1925, a reported 36,000 fans were in attendance of the Chicago Bears game against the Chicago Cardinals. The popularity of football began to take off and in the same year, there
