Prostitution was legal in the ancient Rome. Prostitution is considered as the oldest profession in the world. Prostitution basically means the exchange of sexual services for money. In India, also prostitution has been prevalent since the ancient times, there was the practice of rich asking ’Nagarvadhu’ to sing and dance noted in history as “brides of town”. Devadasi was another form of prostitution that was prevalent the medieval India. Prostitution in India grew in the middle age’s with the Portuguese and Britishers coming to India. Goa was a former Portuguese colony and in the late 16th and 17th centuries they brought with them Portuguese slaves such as young Japanese girls who were bought or captured by them and later forced into prostitution. During the rule of British east India Company, the Britishers set up comfort zones for British troops forcing women and children into the sex trade.
