Cosmetics throughout history have changed drastically throughout the years. From the years 1900-2017 makeup has evolved and has had an impact of the lives of many people through the decades. In the Edwardian Makeup Era (1900-1919), women wanted pale skin and a youthful complexion. Tan skin was seen as lower class, so many women would stay inside or in the shade all day. Facial creams were very popular and also rouge was applied to the cheeks, eyelids, and lips. Foundation was moisturizer, powder, rouge, and then more powder. Grey, brown, and lemon colored pastes were used as eyeshadow. On the lips, lip stain was popular to emulate the “bitten lip” look. Wearing makeup was reserved for women who would perform onstage. Lip gloss was an essential to a person's makeup look in the 2000s. Vast amounts of lip gloss were applied during this time. Thin eyebrows were also once again popular. Dark eyeshadow and blue eyeshadow was popular to create a more grungy look. Tanned skin was also became more common and getting spray tans was a perfect way to achieve that look. This was an era of experimentation with makeup. Emo and Scene makeup became mainstream. Boho chic fashion also was popular with lifted hemlines and flowy skirts. From 2010 to present, the makeup looks have become more natural yet glamorous. Red lips, smokey eyes, bright eyeshadows, and tans or pale skin, it is all popular today. Makeup today is heavily influenced by social media. Past trends have once again became popular, like contouring and highlighting. The Kardashians are popular influences for makeup today, especially Kylie Jenner. She has been the main influences for the trending makeup looks in today's society. Today liquid lipsticks, eyeshadow palettes, highlighters, false eyelashes, and contouring palettes are what many use to achieve the look they want
It is essential to recognize the relative perception of beauty products and hair treatments for different ethnic groups at the time in question. For the white consumer, the use of makeup was the major issue; the disreputable view of the painted lady had to be overcome. The black woman had a more complex situation regarding the products being offered. Hair-straightening and skin-lightening products could be viewed as an attempt to seem more white, and use of these products was thus charged with racial overtones within the black community.
As Talia Felix points out, a cultural disparity exists between our perception of makeup in the Roaring Twenties, and the ordinary look of the day. Our perception of the era relies heavily on the pictures and products of the stars and celebrities of the day. While icons like Louise Brooks and Clara Bow often had a face full of dramatic makeup, ordinary
Showing off your body was the new trend of the ‘20s. Flappers of the 1920 era started wearing shorter dresses and sleeveless tops to seem keener. Before the 1920’s, it was rare for women to even show their ankles let alone their knees. Not only did women start to wear “skimpier” clothing, but they also garnished themselves with accessories. It was all about that bling. Girls were obsessed with pearls, diamonds, and just about anything that looked expensive. They hated cheap dull accessories and wanted the real McCoy. Clothing was not the only change during this time. The way women did their hair and makeup changed. Flappers started wearing a lot of makeup and styling their hair differently. “Flappers raised their hemlines, bobbed their hair, and applied make up with abandon.” (Armburst, Lloyd) No one wanted to be considered a bug-eyed Betty, and they did whatever it took to make themselves more alluring. This new style of women was the bee’s
In today’s time if men wore makeup, people would not accept it and even mock it. If men wore makeup in Elizabethan time, it was culturally acceptable and manly . Cosmetics worn at the time of Queen Elizabeth differed dramatically from those we wear today. Makeup was a huge part of Elizabethan time but a total pain to put on. The makeup was very heavy on the face and you had to put on several layers to get a good look. It told your peers how wealthy and even how fashion forward you were. But since people did not understand how to make the makeup properly it became a life and death situation each day that they put the harsh chemicals on their faces (Leed).
The purpose of our project was to examine how accessible it would be to make medieval cosmetics from the Trotula while evaluating the effectiveness of these cosmetics. The Trotula was written in Southern Italy and consisted of a group of three texts describing women’s medicine. The third section of the Trotula focuses mainly on Women’s Cosmetics. The purpose of this section was to teach females how to improve their appearance themselves, except females, did not read these resources. It was not written by a woman, but by a male physician for male physicians. These male physicians wanted to discover “women’s secrets”. Due to the authorship of the Trotula, there were several problems that appeared when trying to replicate these recipes. Male physicians
All women wish to look their best on their wedding day, prom, or their ten year anniversary, so it is a makeup artist’s job to fulfil this desire. The art of emphasizing one’s most attractive features by highlighting the inner corner of the eye to brighten the eyes, contouring the cheeks to make the cheekbones appear higher and painting on bold lipstick to form perfect, plump lips make the face appear flawless. Some people do not wear makeup everyday, so when they do, their face can appear brightened and awake, therefore they believe they look wonderful. Although many people are confident in their appearance and do not demand makeup to boost their self-esteem, wearing well-applied makeup will always make someone feel
Lipstick, the beauty product that has been used since the middle ages (Brown). Lipstick has gone through many changes during its years. Every girl knows of this beauty product because it has grown to be more popular since it was first sold. Lipstick will never be the same as it used to be because of all of the transformations, new ingredients, and changes in the formula (Brown). Maybe that is a good thing.
The earliest usage of cosmetics can date back to some of the oldest civilizations on
Historically, the purpose of a cosmetic product, which include personal hygiene products, skin care product, make-up and perfumery product, was to decorate and modify the appearance and odour. Although originally its purpose was essentially to enhance the appearance and odour , cosmetic products have gradually developed towards more functional role and continue to gain the capacity to cleanse, dramatically modify, protect and maintain in good condition. Cosmetic product are intended for application on the skin, external mucous membranes, hair ,and nails and to have a local effect , it is not intended to respond to metabolical needs , and is not the function of the cosmetic
There are two ways women would do their eyebrows, the first was to pluck them thin or how much they wanted it to be and then fill them in with pencil to obtain a certain shape. The second way was to pluck or shave it completely off and then draw them in with eyebrow pencil. Natural brows were also a typical thing for women because it was considered fashionable to draw the ends beyond the natural brow and then slope them downward. Eyebrows were a main part of makeup because women tended to have thicker and fuller eyebrows than men which would not exceed many women’s standards in a feminine, artificial look. Lastly, for creating a perfect lip outlook, push-up tubes were used and were invented by Maurice Levy in 1915. Red was the typical lip shade that was used because it was one of many colors to enhance their face with pop color and to balance out their heavy eyeshadow look. Also, the most associated lip look in the 1920s was the cupid’s bow to create the upper lip in a shape of a heart along with applying lipstick on it’s outer edge for a rounded mouth. Furthermore, makeup was very essential in the 1920’s for women because it was a form of individual
Just like the constantly changing fashion world, makeup fads come and go. However, what never changes is the correct approach to applying makeup to achieve the ultimate goal of looking the best you possibly can.
Although cosmetics became widely popular in the 1900s, tombs from 3100 B.C. have revealed that makeup originated in the first Egyptian Dynasty ("The History of Makeup", 1). Researchers found that these cosmetics contained ingredients that ranged from lead to cat dung; both of which are toxic. The use of toxic chemicals in cosmetics, such as coal tar, negatively impacts a person's health. Cosmetic companies put consumers' health at risk due to the use of toxic chemicals, marketing ploys and failure to properly regulate their own products and the chemicals they contain. While cosmetics pose dangerous risks to the human body in general, pregnant women and their fetus are especially vulnerable to the consequences of being exposed to these toxins.
Makeup and cosmetics have always been used long before the first century. Researches never really found exactly who was the first cosmetologist, but they do know who were the people who mixed ingredients together to be able to apply and beautify were the Egyptians. Some sources still find that hard to believe, because the ancient hunters were the first people who mixed urine and mud to camouflage their scent, but that would mean everything from bug spray to VapoRub is a cosmetic, but not all materials that are mixed together are able to apply onto the
