The British Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, was working hard during World War II. In the midst of their multiple projects lied an anti-slavery movement. Liberia was having controversial problems, and the MI6 wanted more information on the matter (O'Conner, Thomas P. "The Dangerous Edge - 1." YouTube. YouTube, 12 Dec. 2013. Web. 12 Mar. 2014). Liberia was “ a state born as a refuge for freed US slaves” (Butcher, Tim. "Graham Greene: Our Man in Liberia." History Today, n.d. Web. 11 Mar. 2014) . Even though this movie has been cited on Youtube, I concur that the information presented is accurate. While I have come across this movie by other means, I was only able to watch it from the Youtube website. None the less, this is a real production documentary that includes Graham Greene himself presenting information.
Dangerous Edge: A Life of Graham Greene is a documentary on Graham Greene’s life. While this film is American-produced, it talks about his experiences as a spy for MI6, the British secret service. This film gave me insight on Greene’s expeditions from his point of view. I plan to use these insights in my writings.
In his work “Escape and Revolt in Black and White,” James M. McPherson discusses the lives of now famous black and white defenders of the black population and how society’s views of these individuals changed over time. The majority of his essay focused on the stories of Harriet Tubman, Harriet Jacobs, and John Brown, each of whom impacted their own immediate surroundings, even if only on a small scale, in an attempt to improve the condition of blacks. He investigates whether these now famous individuals became famous due to their own merits or as another piece of propaganda to support either side of the fight over civil rights. During Rainsfords journey to and through the island of General Zaroff he partakes in an adventurous journey filled with mystery, suspense, and dilemma. These devices are used to keep the reader interested throughout the story.
Ida B. Wells-Barnett is an investigative journalist who wrote in honesty and bluntness about the tragedies and continued struggles of the Negro man. She was still very much involved with the issue even after being granted freedom and the right to vote. Statistics have shown that death and disparity continued to befall the Negro people in the South where the white man was “educated so long in that school of practice” (Pg. 677 Par. 2). Yet in all the countless murders of Negroes by the white man only three had been convicted. Without knowing, one could assume Greene’s “Wide-Awakeness and the Moral Life” and “The Art of Being Present” were written modern times. In fact, I thought they were recent articles. In a world that is constantly changing, there are few things that stay the same. And although sameness is the exact thing that these articles argue against, as educators we can use that sense of stalemate to continue to push ourselves and our students.

Frederick Douglass and Richard Wright wrote memoirs recounting their experiences with racism. Though their writing styles are completely different from one another, the subjects they discuss are similar. After reading each piece they have both made me empathize with their feelings, however different their lives are from mine. Their memoirs, My Bondage My Freedom and Black Boy, provide insightful images of the racist and cruel treatment these writers experienced. Despite all of their stylistic differences, after both excerpts I understand the passion they felt for the hatred they endured.

“A Tale Intended to be After the Fact…” is how Stephan Crane introduced his harrowing story, “The Open Boat,” but this statement also shows that history influences American Literature. Throughout history, there has been a connection among literary works from different periods. The connection is that History, current events, and social events have influenced American Literature. Authors, their literary works, and the specific writing styles; are affected and influenced by the world around them. Authors have long used experiences they have lived through and/or taken out of history to help shape and express in their works. Writing styles are also affected by the current trends and opinions of the period they represent. By reading American Literature, we have seen the inhumane treatment of slaves, we have seen the destruction caused by wars, and we have seen the devastation of eras such as The Great Depression.
