As of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, global standards followed the Western tradition of a bride dressed in white or off-white, with a head-covering, whether a veil or head-piece, and carrying flowers or some other object. The bride would be recognized by her dress, and it could be regarded as bad luck to be married in anything but white.
The bride is then assisted in adorning herself for the public ceremony which begins with a feast at the family’s home.
Weddings are a celebration of love, family, and culture. Monsoon Wedding and My Big Fat Greek Wedding combine these aspects of weddings to tell us two different stories that revolve around very similar themes. Both movies portray the importance of family and acceptance through events and conflicts that surround a wedding. However, the different types of romances, marriages, and cultural issues depicted in these movies create two distinct images that can be seen as polar opposites, while sharing a similar message.

Before the actual wedding took place, several things had to happen. The bride had to get engaged. Engagement before the wedding was considered a good manner but wasn’t always required. The couple would then have to choose the date they would get married on. A lot of care went into choosing the date of the wedding because there were days that were considered both lucky and unlucky. Marriage is an important part of people’s lives. It’s when you marry the person that you hope that you will end up growing old with. A regular marriage to people’s eyes is finding the person you love and getting married in a banquet hall with a priest and flowers. Not all marriages are celebrated the same. Some cultures believe in the parents choosing who they will end up with, while in other cultures peopel give money to the bride before she gets married as a sign of being independent and ready to start a new chapter in her life. There are so many different religions in the world and so many different types of marriages. Out of all the different ethnic group's Arab groups, Spanish/Hispanic/Latina, Caucasian, African American, and Asians have the most different types of marriage. My research question is how do various ethnic groups socialise to perform marriages?
There were people around all the time, and also the weddings are very different. The Indian culture has an engagement party rather than a bridal shower. Everybody came to the house of the brides rather than renting a place for the engagement party. Another thing that I noted that was different was that the way that they dressed was different. The women were not allowed to show their legs, they had to have pants on, or capris.
One of the important differences between the ways weddings are celebrated by Vietnamese and Americans is preparation. According to the culture, Vietnamese wedding first begins by choosing a date and time for the marriage ceremony which is matched to both bride’s and groom’s ages in the oriental zodiac. For example, I am married to a man who was born in the year of the cat, and I was born in the year of the pig. We therefore are two of three matched ages including pig, cat, and goat, so the best time for our wedding is the time of goat. Moreover, before the wedding day, the groom’s family would make a trip to the bride’s home to inform the best date for the wedding ceremony. After wedding date was informed, bride and groom start sending invitations to their guests. Vietnamese wedding uses lunar calendar for the ceremony and invitations for their guests at the wedding parties, even though people in Vietnam use both western and lunar calendars. On the other hand, Americans prepare their weddings by the most favorable day for both bride and groom which mostly happen on the weekend. Many American brides also have bridal showers before their weddings. For example, my next door neighbor in America had a bridal shower about more than one month before her wedding. After that, she and her fiancé started sending in...
One of the ceremonies that starts the beginning of the wedding festivities is the engagement ceremony, this is called the sagai ceremony or ring ceremony. This ceremony is also called Mangni in the northern region of India. The ceremony sees the bride and groom’s hands become tied together with their wrists and pulses touching, meanwhile a type of fabric, cloth, rope or symbolic material is tied around to create a ‘knot’.
