The short stories, “Cat in the Rain” and “Hills Like White Elephants” are both written by Ernest Hemingway. Both of these stories present the adversity that women face when it comes to their relationships. According to Hemingway, men were less affectionate and were more concerned with themselves, meanwhile, women were trying to build a foundation for themselves with their significant other. Relationship, in general are hard, but based on the women characters in both stories, the women are completely unsatisfied with their lovers. The story “Cat in the Rain” is filled with symbolism and meaning. It is essentially about an American couple that stays at a hotel in Italy. In “Cat in the Rain” the woman is very unhappy with her husband because he do not go out of his way for her and barely pays attention to what she says. He basically just shows her that he does not care but that might not be the case. For example, when she expresses her feelings to him and what she wants, he says “Oh, shut up and get something to read”(pg.57), even though it might be sarcasm, it basically shows that he does not want to hear what she has to say and he is annoyed by it. In “Hills Like White Elephants”, the girl seemed so cold and unhappy with herself because the American basically wanted her to get an abortion, and she became irritated from that. In a way, it seems as though he was kind of trying to support her with whatever she wanted to do but from her point of view, it seemed like he did not want to keep the baby, which was upsetting for her. For example when they were having a conversation about the abortion, the girl said, “if I do it, you’ll be happy and things will be like they were and you’ll love me”.
