Highschool Sports Benefits Outweighing the Risks Whenever someone thinks of high school sports do they think of an exciting time to learn and grow as an individual or do they think of it as a violent injury prone activity? People argue that the risks of playing high school sports, such as injuries, outweigh the benefits. However, I have found, through my research, that playing high school sports have benefits and those benefits outweigh the potential risks that could occur. One benefit of playing high school sports is that students tend to perform academically; there are studies done to prove this. Teamwork is a big part of life in the real world. For instance, Kent McGroarty, a freelance writer who has shown up on known online publications, says, “Teamwork in sports leads to cooperation, confidence, and accountability.” McGroarty is emphasizing that even if a student isn’t best friends with another teammate they need to learn to cooperate with each other to help better their team. McGroarty says that when the team is working together and they have each others back, then the confidence levels go up. Accountability is a big lesson that can be learned through teamwork--If someone messes up on the field, court, etc. they have to own up to their mistakes and learn from them. All these skills from teamwork can help a student when it comes time to face real world challenges. I have also learned how to work better as a team through all my coaches and sports. For example, my coaches stress teamwork on and off the field. If one person slacks off and doesn’t do their job, then the whole team will be punished, so we learn that what you do can affect others. For instance, Alice Park and Sean Gregory wrote in a Time article, titled “Is Football Too Dangerous”, that “certain sports might be too dangerous to play... Football for example, has drawn particular criticism for exposing athletes to serious dangers such as concussions.” Sports injuries like these occur, but the more serious injuries are more rare than people think. From my experience, people receive these injuries, but they recover in the time that is necessary and still get to fully experience the benefits that come with high school sports.
