High School: The Most Useless Years of your Life
The American school system has serious flaws in its regime, from allowing low
test scores, grouping students, and allowing tenure teachers to not teach their
students, excreta. The two main topics that most parents of high school students
find important, are whether their children are doing well in school and are my
child's teacher doing everything they can to help my child succeed?
Unfortunately, these things are not the best things American school systems are
known for.
With the no child left behind policy, students are advancing when they should
not be. If a child does not understand what the material was, and they struggle

and fail a grade they should be held back not to be cruel, but to help the child. "NCLB assumed that shaming schools that were unable to lift test scores every year- and the people who work in them- would lead to higher scores"(Ravitch 258).
If these children have low test scores, it may not be the
teachers' fault if the children do not understand what they are being taught
they will not perform well on standardized tests.
Another reason students could be performing so low could be the teachers there
are many teachers who do not teach or put in grades because they do not care
what happens to their students. Again, this is not all teachers there are good
teachers and those teachers are the ones that students usually remember more
than the teachers who did not care. " My favorite teacher was Mrs. Ruby
Ratliff. More than fifty years ago, she was my homeroom teacher at San Jacinto
High School in Houston, and I was lucky enough to get her English class as a
senior...These are not sorts of things did not appear on any standardized test"
(Ravitch 258). Teachers should want to strive to be this kind of teacher, the
ones students remember and not the teachers who did not care about their
students and just wanted a paycheck. These bad teachers really impact their
students if they are not teaching them the students are not learning, and if
these students play sports this can be worse for them because they must keep a
certain GPA to be able to play that

sport. Some people say that Student-Athletes have lower test scores than a regular student. This is false, most Student-Athletes must maintain at least a C grade point average, to be on the team let alone play. So, how can children who do so well in a class have such low-test scores?
Most schools put way more into their
sports than their academics. (Koren 256), in this image, there are two sides of
the "court" a game side and a test-score side, with players only on the game
side, this is saying that most American high schools are way more about their
sports teams than preparing their students for tests. Some teachers do not give
homework on "game days" so students will go watch the game and so the athletes
do not fall behind. This is an issue because students are not learning and
preparing like they should for standardized tests.
In conclusion, the American school system focuses more on sports than on
Academics, the no child left behind policy is not effective, and students do not
learn well from bad teachers. Students learn and remember good teachers more
than they do bad teachers, while that is the case even if students have a good
teacher they may not pass their tests because they do not understand what they
are learning, they will still go onto their next year in school even if they are
not prepared. This will cause them to fall behind, and if that child plays a
sport that will also be affected because the parent will become upset
because people in a community care more about sports than the test scores of their children. The school system needs some serious changes, and these are not even some of the worst issues that it faces there are things much worse than sports, bad teachers, and the no child left behind program.
Teachers will neglect students that need the most help to help those who need a slight shove. This is known as “educational triage” (Booher-Jennings 231). Those on the threshold of passing the state mandated tests are significantly more likely to receive help from instructors than those that are significantly lower than their peers (233). This is to make the district look better as these children are far more likely to pass the test with the extra assistance. This still leaves the ones who were left behind essentially out to dry. If anything, it should be the opposite. The ones who are at the lowest levels should be receiving the most assistance on standardized test preparation.
some parents may end up feeling that their parenting skills are not on par with other parents of
Retaining kids only began to be questioned in recent years. Could there be a relation from these kids falling behind in school to how the world has changed and different ways kids are raised? We all know the different names for the young generation, including: “The Cupcake Generation,” “Generation Me,” and “The Participation Trophy Generation.” Everything that has been handed to these kids has affected their ability to earn things, instead they feel entitled. They can grow up lacking the motivation to finish a task. When at school, they can feel that they deserve a good grade without working for it because they are “special.”
Student athletes live very busy lives. A typical school day runs from 8:00-2:30, add in a two- hour practice or game, score a part time job, dive into some family time, a grand slam of homework and catch a little bit of sleep. Students are more stressed due to the many activities they are a part of. This issue affects a lot of people not only in this school district, but most other high schools throughout the country. All student athletes exercise more than other children who are not involved in an extracurricular sport. In school athletics, the players are called “student athletes” meaning that school activities come first. There are strict rules for student athletes, not only on the field but in the classroom as well. In physical education
In addition to these examples, interscholastic sports also teaches students a lot about dedication. An athlete must be willing to put a lot of time and effort into his sport. Spending this much time on one thing could lead to many things. A student could fall behind in classes. By the time practices and games get over, the athlete is tired and is not likely to stay up another hour or two doing homework. Students need to spend more time on homework and less time in
The pressure of college sports can cause a mental struggle for the “student athletes” as if they don’t have enough on their plate already. The unfairness from the regular student to a “student-athlete”
...student as slow then the student, may feel that the teacher has given up on them and not put forth the effort do well in school. The most devastating labels are put on the poor and the powerless. They do not have the fight in them to reverse the label and therefore believe that the label is true.
Because of the lack of attention from parents, as a result students are getting low grades and not only the students

People assume that if majority of the class fail then the teacher is to blame and is not teaching the class. Well the student is to blame. If no one is learning there is still teaching. All teachers have various ways of providing information to their learners. Some techniques are more effective then others, but it’s the learner’s priority to take the teachers information and comprehend it into their own better understanding. The student holds the power to choose rather hey want to learn new information from their teacher or not.
Not only the students but some of the parents don't like st’s either. When the parents find
Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together.
Teach your child whether it’s an activity they want to participate in, or use of something that another person is responsible for, they must ask
