Heroes traditionally seem to be associated with the idea that "they're more than human." This has been evident in Greek, Hindu, Chinese, Irish and countless other cultures in some aspect or another. Author M.J. stated in the article Hero, "The hero was a man who performed great deeds in the service of the community, attaining a status between god and human in polytheistic Greek religion." This quote explains that heroes of today are different than traditional heroes. In my opinion a hero of today doesn't retain status between gods and humankind, but will have fortitude and responsibility for the community they're in. "Looking back through the dim prism of the centuries of violence, spoke of a time when heroes walked the earth. These exceptional men and women fought monsters, performed superhuman feats and consorted with the gods themselves" (Skidmore 1). When heroes walked the earth they were looked at with pride and in my opinion they idolized themselves as a god and people admired them. Because of this, the ancient Greeks were polytheists and believed in a wide selection of immortal heroic deities. "The greatest of these lived on the remote heights of Mount Olympus but were by no means aloof from the mortals below" (Skidmore 1). A hero has an offset of being normal from the beginning. An example of this is Oedipus and the heroine Atlanta. Heroes received unusual education and knowledge. In the Greek culture this meant learning and advancing with Centaurs, which is a half-man and half-horse being as their teachers. "Centaurs taught young heroes the medicinal value of herbs and plants." (Skidmore 1) Because heroes learned about these things, I think this was extremely helpful in their quest of being a hero and to some extent gives them the potential to heal and cure themselves. Whether they're sick or injured they are able to heal them selves with knowing the special powers of some plants. During his life slavery has been an issue and he was a person that wanted to put an end to it. He led America through the Civil War and helped abolish slavery and died doing it. He showed strong recognition for being loyal and standing up for what he believed in. He sacrificed his life for many. "His brilliance and heroism helped end the Civil War and create a better future for our country" (Historys Heroes). Without him I think it would have changed the future based on the outcome of the Civil War.
With this in mind, modern day heroes seem to have a different predilection than heroes we view from centuries ago. The distinct difference I think that differ todays heroes from the past is we, as a society, have moved so far forward that there's always something happening around us. Centuries ago there wasn’t as many people around, and without phones and internet to spread news, It was all kept quiet until word of mouth got around.
