A Hero in the Military We all have them, men and women we know who have served in the military. They are people we admire, look up to, and respect for the sacrifices they made and their courage in the face of adversity on and off the battlefield. For hundreds of years, our military troops have sacrificed their lives for America’s freedom. They have never stopped giving of themselves day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year. Whether it’s on the grounds of Iraq or the mountains in Afghanistan, people are fighting for our freedom. Adam Koopmann, Military Police Officer, has consistently achieved these accomplishments on a daily basis in order to fight for our country. He has improved the lives of hundreds of people making him a hero. Adam has always been inspired to get involved in the military. It wasn’t until he went to UNI University for two years. He was going for Criminology as his major. So he could be a police officer. The University of Northern Iowa states that Criminologist study juvenile delinquency, the effects of crime on victims, crimes committed in the workplace, and the response of the criminal justice system to crimes and victims …show more content…
(“Criminology Program”). He decided that he didn't really like criminology, so that is when he decided to give the Army a try. Adam faced many obstacles while joining the army and throughout serving. His biggest one was leaving his family and friends. It was the first time that he flew, in an airplane, and has ever been that far away from home. However, he knew that his family and friends loved and supported his decision to join the Army and that helped him a lot. Some of the obstacles Adam faced in the Army was learning their regulations and how the Army operated. Adam says you’re whole life changes because it really isn’t up to you anymore about what they wanna do or say. They learn to listen and take orders and do what they are ordered to do. Their everyday life turns into where do I have to be, what time do I have to be there and what needs to be done (Koopmann). Once you learn the rules the military just becomes a way of life and it is not easy for everyone to adapt to that way. In addition, there are other obstacles and challenges throughout their military career. For example, they have to stay physically in shape, continue to learn and teach the army regulations. All the training they will receive, on top of that try and be the best soldier/leader so you can move up in ranks. Adam had a variety of duties in the army.
It just depended on the time of the year and what cycle of training he was in. At times his duty was working the road as law enforcement, making sure everyone on the army base was following the laws and helping those in needs. In addition, the next part of the year, he would be getting ready to go out to the field for training. During that time he would be going over all the MP tactics (Military police) and going over their weapons, getting them ready for ranges and making sure they operated correctly. Adam tells me that being in the Army takes a lot of work and dedication and you have to learn how to put your training and battle buddies first (Koopmann). That way, if they do deploy, they know that them and the person next to them is ready to
go. Adam has learned a lot of life lessons from the army. It has taught him to be responsible, work hard, and care for others around him. Adam told me that without the military, he doesn’t know if he would be the same person he is and because of that, he is grateful and honored to wear the Army uniform and fight for this country (Koopmann). Adam’s rank was an E-5 which is a sergeant. After serving, Adam started a new job. His job is a correctional officer in Rockwell City at a prison, Fort Dodge. His duties as a Correctional Officer is to enforce the rules and keep order within jails or prison. Another one is to supervise the activities of the prisoners. He also has to search prisoners for contraband items (guns, drugs etc.). Adam stated that he will always be proud of serving this country in the Army Reserve (Koopmann). Military police officers show most of The Great Eight traits, these include, smart, strong, resilient, selfless, caring, charismatic, reliable, and inspiring (Cherry “The Psychology of Heroism”). With that being said Adam has shown most of these traits serving our country. All in all, Adam Koopmann is highly deserving of this heroic honor.
Bureau. He has been in law enforcement for 23 years. Sergeant Tony knew that he wanted to be

Gilmartin begins by describing the typical rookie officer. Most are energetic, idealistic, enthusiastic and very driven. Quickly this enthusiasm can change from one of positivity to one that is very cynical and emotionally charged. These behaviors and thoughts over time if not corrected become exacerbated leading to noticeable mental and physical changes. The author, Gilmartin, uses personal experiences and other real life stories effectively so that many officers can relate and identify with the topic of the book.
What is a hero? To our understanding, a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, and writer wrote The Odyssey. In this novel he talks about The Heroes Journey which are twelve different stages of adventure known as the Ordinary World, the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Test/Allies/Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, the Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return With The Elixir. The Odyssey is about a legendary hero named Odysseus, who fought among the Greeks in the battle of Troy and went through the stages of The Heroes Journey. Odysseus lived in Ithaca, Northwest of Greece, with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.
In my opinion, a hero is someone whose principal purpose, whether it be in one situation or over the span of their entire life, is to help others while simultaneously making the world a better place. When the word hero is brought up, the most prevailing image that comes to mind is superheroes like Batman and Superman. But I don’t think you have to have superpowers or even be well known in order to be a hero. There are people all over the world whose intention is to do selfless deeds and go out of their way for others without expectation of obtaining anything in return. These are the type of people I like to consider everyday heroes. They go through life just trying to be the best they can and trying to help as many people as they can. Whether
Who would imagine, George C. Wallace an American hero. Strong, courageous, noble and thoughtful are a few words used to describe a hero. Merriam-Webster (2014) dictionary defines a hero as a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities. Among several historical and controversial leaders, George Wallace and Gilgamesh are considered great heroes. However through their individual journeys they both learned how to humble themselves for the greater good of their society.
2. Dike (p.77 to 79) Robert Ross shows his perseverance, when he tries to save himself from drowning in the dikes. He fights against Mother Nature, and thinks strategically by pushing himself and not giving up. He was fearful of drowning, mentally motivated himself to get out and avoid dying, and soon eventually breaks free. This shows how strong Robert is when motivated by the will to survive. Although he was fearful, he overcame it and saved himself, since some would just give up. Before entering the war, it was seen that he would run away from his problems (Rowena’s death), but now as he realizes that there is no point of return, he finds a new sense of drive. He shows his willpower, by maintaining an independent, and strong, logical mind when faced with fear, and learns to fight so that was doesn’t get the best of him. “I don’t want to drown, he thought. Please don’t drown. He pushed himself up with his head hanging down,” (Findley 79).
When you think about heroism, who comes to mind? Did you think of someone such as Superman, Sherlock Holmes, or your parents? Regardless of whom you choose, what characteristics of this hero embody your ideology of heroism? Historically, heroes were bronzy men with bulging muscles who slew villainous oppressors. Yet to my own belief, modern-day heroes are not required to be physically adept, but rather, heroes need to be authentically driven to overcoming oppression to fortify strength.
Heroism. Heroism is “heroic conduct” or “courageous action”(“Heroism”). People throughout America’s history, and the world’s history, for more than hundreds of years, have satisfied the standards of heroism, rising above and doing what is right. Heroism doesn’t have to mean saving somebody’s life. To be a hero, one does not need a cape or a villain to fight. Exhibiting acts of heroism can be as small helping retrieve a cat from a tree or as large as helping put out the fire of a burning building. Whether one’s acts of heroism are miniscule or major, they occur every day by ordinary people, proving their extraordinary abilities. After World War II ended, many acts of heroism were displayed that are still remembered today, specifically involving Operation Little Vittles. Over two million citizens living in West Berlin were doomed, cut off from the outside world by the Russians, praying for a miracle. Their wish came true when a handful of pilots agreed to drop thousands of tons of food and fuel from the air in Berlin. One of these esteemed pilots goes by the name of Gail Halvorsen, who changed the situation of the Russian blockade for the better. Halvorsen made the daring decision to drop thousands of individual packages of candy to all of the sweet deprived citizens of West Berlin. Pilot Gail Halvorsen contributed a daring effort by flying day in and day out dropping candy all with the hopes of trying to improve the awful conditions for those involved in the blockade, putting smiles on people’s faces and living up to the standards of heroism.
What is a hero? That is the question that has many different answers depending on who you ask. There are some pretty popular answers to that question. One of those answers is; “A hero is someone who helps other people, or helps to make other people's lives better.” Another is; “A hero is a person who tries to make the world a better place.” or “A hero is a person who does something that is more than what is expected.” Still others are “A hero is someone that doesn't do something for his or her own problems but for the benefit of others” and “A hero is a person that doesn't want to be a hero just to be famous.” Those were just some statements about what people think a hero is, but what about the qualities a hero should have?

When I was a wee child, I always remembered watching reality, singing shows like American Idol and X-Factor and wondering if one day, could I ever possibly meet these celebrities or singers? Heretofore, who would have ever to predict that I met a renowned singer on American idol sooner than imagined? This miraculous moment occurred during the summer of 2016 when I was shopping at Target. For a few months before June, my father planned a summer, camping trip for my family to travel along with other families in our catholic church community. All of the members in my family, which includes my father and younger sister, who was going for this 3 day camp-out trip packed and organized everything but me. Therefore, I must gather some last-minute items like the usual late bird I am.
Hero...What does that mean? Quality…Inspirational…Unique…That’s what I think anyways...They tell me to be a “Do-Gooder,” whatever that means. We all picked someone we love or care about that lives in Michigan. I picked someone that I obviously care and love for. I do love and care for my mom, grandma, and my whole family, and my friends, but I picked this particular person. They have been there for me since I was born.
