This piece of art was commission in 1853 and hung in 1855. The painting captures Hernando De Soto, the Spanish conquistador and explorer, riding in on a white horse symbolizing victory, in the finest of attire in the brightness of the picture. The painting depicts his discovery of the Mississippi River as he and troops approach the river and the Natives that are camped in front of it. As De Soto moves towards the Natives, who are in front of their teepees, the chief extends a seemly piece offering a piece pipe to him. This picture further tells a deeper story as you look at the darker part of it. There are cannons, weapons, and injured men. what initially is called a victory. Therefore, for allegedly discovering the Mississippi, he had a fight for this discovery. This painting shows the submission of the Native tribes and how religion played a part coupled with the forces in a battle was the mindset of many in the conquest in the New World. During the time of history when this painting was completed was the Mexican-American War and the United States gained over 500,000 square miles of land in the war. Which possibly invoked the American ambition for discovery, the desire for expansion, and the will to conquest. The artist successfully communicates the context of the painting by illustrating the joy of De Soto and his men in reaching what they set out to do and plainly shows anyone who views it how proud he was for the discovery and the victory.

Hernan Cortes was born at Medellin in Spain in the year 1485 and eventually became one of the great Governors of Mexico City. It all started in 1518 when the Governor of Cuba (Diego Velazquez) placed him in charge of an expedition to explore Mexico for colonization. In February, 1519, Cortes was about to set sail when Velazquez changed his mind at tried to replace him; however Cortes in an act of mutiny pushed forward anyway. In March of 1519, Cortes claimed the land for the Spanish Crown (Charles V). Because of this great victory and the gold that Cortes sent back to Spain, he was named Governor and Captain General of Mexico in 1523.
Throughout time, stories have been passed down from generation to generation in order to make sense of our world and to share that understanding with others. “Los tres hermanos (The Three Brothers)” and “El indito de las cien vacas (The Indian and the Hundred Cows)” are two Tales of the Hispanic Southwest that I feel the reader could truly relate to in terms of the important moral lessons that were meant to be taught, inferred and understood. The lesson in “Los tres hermanos (The Three Brothers)” involves understanding that the characters involved failed to reflect on the needs of the thirsty, hungry and poor, the lonely, as well as the elderly and are ultimately fairly served by means of moral ruin, death, and worst of all, eternal damnation, while “El indito de las cien vacas (The Indian and the Hundred Cows)” in due course, involves the notion that God helps those who help themselves.

For many years’ native people of the North America lived in peaceful in their homelands. However, one day the lives of the Native Americans would come to an upsetting stop. In June of 1540, Hernando De Soto, a Spanish explorer to led the first European expedition deep into the United States mainland in search of god, glory and gold. Hernando set to out to conquer the empire and to capture the Aztecs, .On his next journey out as govern, he encountered the native’s people. From that day forward, natives would adapt to the settlers ways and even involved themselves in wars.
In 1539 Hernando de Soto and five hundred adventurers began on a journey of exploration that would take 4 years and would travel through 10 states in the southeast United States. His goal was to discover a source of wealth, preferably gold, and around his mines establish a settlement. During his travels through La Florida he encountered numerous groups of native peoples, making friends of some and enemies of others. His expedition was not the first in La Florida; however, it was the most extensive. In its aftermath, thousands of Indians would die by disease that the Spaniards brought from the Old World. De Soto would initially be remembered as a great explorer but, would be later viewed as a destroyer of native culture. However, in truth de Soto was neither a hero or a villain but rather an adventurer.

The major structures in the painting consist of an umber colored cross and three ladders. Starting from the top of the image, there is an old man with a scraggly, white beard holding onto and leaning over the top beam of the cross. He is set off by color, wearing a bright red gown and azure head wrap. The majority of his body rests atop the cross while he stands on the ladder that is leaning on the back of the cross.
De Soto compared to other town is quite small. This smallness in De Soto creates a tight knit community with neighbors helping neighbors. I personally do not live in De Soto, yet I do go to school here. With me not living in De Soto I more often than not do not feel like I am apart of this community. By applying for Cats Care to volunteer around De Soto, it would make me more involved in De Soto’s community. The importance of volunteering in De Soto is to help out the local’s and strengthen the community. By us, high schooler, helping out and volunteering around De Soto we can a stronger community because it shows that us, teenagers, care about our home and the people within it.
